Will an 18.5" 1-in-10" twist .308 shoot out to 1K?

Yards that is...

Reason I ask is that I'm going to Long Range alley with a buddy tomorrow and the only bolt gun I have is a suppressed Salvage 10FP with an AWC thundertrap and planned on shooting some 168grn fed gold match.

Can I expect anything at that distance... if so, how many minutes should I come up?

Thanks!!!

Yes it will get that far.

Do yourself a favor and get some 175's. The 168's go sideways from a 26" barrel at 1000 yards.

Can't tell you about dope. You would need to know your muzzle velocity at least or just shoot it and dial until you hit the target.

168gr out of a 18" barrel? you might have some trouble there. Try either 175SMK or better yet, 155 Scenars are what you should be shooting out of that thing. Same BC at the 175 with way more speed.

How many minutes of elevation does your scope have from zero?

Load up some 175's over 44.5gr Varget and try them out. Or better yet, get your hands on some 155 Scenars and try them over 46.2gr RL15 or 46.5-47gr Varget. Those will get you to 1K with not much trouble out of a 18" tube.

I just checked the specs on the scope and it shows to have 140MOA total travel. If it tracks properly that should be plenty but you will probably need at least 40MOA if you can make 2650fps with that load.

We can figure out the dope for the rifle if the bullet will get there. Better bring plenty of ammo.

My guess is that your 175gr bullet will go subsonic at about 850 yards but the 175 should still remain stable and not keyhole like a 168SMK is prone to do.

Grand Cane is at 300 feet of elevation. I suspect you are getting about 2400FPS out of that 18.5 inch barrel and the temp will be around 70 degrees.

From at zero at 100 yards, you will need about 49 MOA.

Re: Will an 18.5" 1-in-10" twist .308 shoot out to 1K?

i had my 18.5" 11.25 twist 308 out to 1500 yards and was making hits on a 21" steel plate a week or two ago. that was with my rifle and someone else's ammo. i believe it was 45 grains of varget, 175 smk, virgin lapua brass and a br2 primer. so yeah, yours should be fine to 1k with the right load. 168 smks is not the right load.

I don't mean to hijack, but what is it about the 168grain that makes it key-hole and not the lighter 155 or heavier 175?

Re: Will an 18.5" 1-in-10" twist .308 shoot out to 1K?

the 155 may be lighter but its longer and has the same BC as the 175. The 168 is ok out to 600 or even 800 yards, but anything further, I would go with the 155Scenars. My 308's see nothing but the 155 Scenars, there is no reason to use anything els.

The 168gr Sierra MatchKing is a fine, accurate bullet for 600 yards. I have shot at lot of it around the range or closer in and it works really well. I believe the earlier M118 used that bullet and snipers rarely take shots with a .308 or .30-06 beyond 5-600 yards so it did very well.

However the design of the bullet is such that when it goes transonic the disturbance causes it to lose its point-on attitude and it starts to tumble in flight. It will continue in its trajectory but now it may be tumbling and this means it will hit the paper in whatever attitude it's in at the instant it hits the paper.

I believe the reason it is so affected by the transonic passage is that most of it weight is in the rear of the bullet and only for a relatively short distance; the boat tail is short. The 175gr is a somewhat different configuration and its boat tail is longer. In short the 168gr SMK seems to have the exact weight distribution that causes it to be a great bullet while supersoninc, but to also loose its bearings in the transonic passage.

I believe this is only for the 168gr SMK, I do not think the 168 A-Max is affected in a similar manner. I shot plenty of 168 A-Max but never past 600.

It sort of makes you wonder if flat-base bullets are more susceptible to transonic tumbling compared to boat tail bullets.
