Ill be at Arlington National Cemetery Friday morning for the interment of an old friend. Either Thursday before or Friday after the service, his daughter and I plan to visit the Viet Nam Memorial.

I understand that you can make rubbed images of the names on the wall. If anyone has a request and I can do it Id be honored.

    Let me know.

    That is a great offer.

Myself, that is something I look forward to doing when My Lady and I are able to attend in person. Same goes for a few particular headstones at Arlington, if that is allowed.

Our condolences, and may your friend (and all) Rest In Peace, with Thanks.

It’s on my list of places to visit

Recon team "Sky Merchant". In the still remote mountains between the Rockpile and Khe Sahn. Team was tracked and compromised. The emergency extraction point was bracketed with mortar and small arms fire. Padilla took a direct mortar hit while setting up a claymore. 8 man team. All except one was KIA or WIA. Padilla is the only one that did not make it on the helicopter, which was taking aimed fire for several minutes. Rescuers were not able to locate his remains during that time. It was a bitch to get them extracted. Equipment had to be left behind. The next day the extraction area was destroyed by Marine artillery. Padilla is listed as KIA, body not recovered. In recent history search efforts were made but the jungle had reclaimed the area and nothing could be found. The place was such bad mojo that subsequent recon missions in the area did not go to the extraction point.

I visited Arlington and the Wall last summer. Took my then 11-yo son to see it. I never get choked up but for visiting places like this, or the flag lifted on Iwo Jima at the USMC museum.

Took both kids to a local memorial this year. I think every youngster, and adult for that matter, should visit these solemn places.

Thanks for giving a shit Mag . I work with green era ( Nam ) Vets weekly , and I have no idea how those
guys coped with the head fuck of the jungle . Most of my contact experience was mountains , you can
see em coming from a long way away . You can’t see 3 feet in the jungle sometimes . RIP brothers .

    Its powerful.

So was the funeral at Arlington.

RIP Captain Michael S. Diogo. Fighter and bomber pilot WWII and Korea.

Since I hate being late I was about 45 minutes early. Followed the GPS to 100 Carpenter Rd as instructed, and asked for the Old Chapel. The guard gave me directions so I spend 10 minutes winding through the cemetery not knowing its also a military base. I get to a check point and all these suits ooze out ith big bulges under their coats and ask me what the hell Im doing there. I tell them Im here for my friends funeral, wheres the chapel. Theya bout shit and tell me I cant cross there Im on restricted area and have to go back to go through security. So I wind back around and finally get to the security gate where, because one of Mike's daughters had made some stupid remarks and threats, they tear everybody apart. Finally get to the chapel on time and they have a nice short ceremony. We all follow the horse drawn (biggest horses Ive seen) caisson to the grave sight where there is another short ceremony, a 21 gun salute, and taps.

Then since we're there we do the tour. It is quite humbling. Rows and rows of white stones all in perfect alignment. 2, 3 and a few 4 star headstones all over the place. Stopped for the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Interesting how they were chosen. From each war several 'unknown caskets' were exhumed and a Medal of Honor recipient picked an anonymous one to fill the spot. Interestingly enough there is no one in the Viet Nam tomb as his remains were Id'd by DNA.

If you get the chance do this.
