Will Heavy Varmint contour fit Rem 700P stock?

The rifle is a 10 yr old Remington 700P, it has an HS Precision stock with an aluminum bedding block. The stock barrel is a bit lighter than the straight taper heavy varmint contour I'm thinking of geting. I measure 0.823" at the muzzle and about 2" for the "D" dimension in the figure below.

So my question is: How do you determine the clearance between the existing barrel and stock to determine rebarreling options? I'd like to put a heavy varmint contour on to get a bit more weight but I have no idea if there will be clearance issues.

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom.

I had the same rifle and posted the same question. After some replies stating it was easy to open up the barrel channel in the stock, I went with bartlein #7 MTU contour barrel and had the channel opened up. Easy to do, and the stock was still rigid enough and remained free floated.

Hope this helps,

Alan

You're over thinking this WAY too much. Order the barrel you want. You could put a strait barrel (no taper) on your rifle and be fine. Worst case scenario is you have to break out the sand paper and a wooden dowel (or something of the correct diameter) and sand the stock to fit. If you are dead set on having a perfect barrel channel, hog out more than is needed then bed the barrel in with Devcon.

Thanks! Was it only the kevlar/fiberglass material that needed to be removed or did some aluminum have to go as well? I had my barrel out of the stock only once about three years ago when I installed a new trigger but I can't remember much about the bedding block.

i used the 'hog' method. then wrapped the barrel in a few layers of packing tape (smooth) and set the action in place with the oversized barrel channel filled with bondo. let dry for about an hour and then popped it out. sanded down, painted, looks like factory.

removing the tape off the barrel let exactly .1" all the way around when everything was bolted up.

WEAR A MASK, thats some nasty stuff to breathe whilst sanding.

if you hit the aluminum forward of the recoil lug you went too far. it really wont take much to get it to fit. I suggest a dremel.

That's what I was hoping to hear. I have no fear of grinding away some of the stock material to make the new barrel fit. I just didn't want to have to machine away any aluminum. If that were the case I would probably just go with the same contour.

Shouldnt need to remove any of the block. As far as I can remeber, the block doesnt extend much more than the recoil lug, which is on the reciever, not the barrel.

If memory serves, the forearm has an aluminum support, but it doesn't come close enough to the surface to be a problem. I know it wasn't an issue on mine. You should only have to remove the kevlar/fiberglass. Oh, and when I said bed the barrel, you obviously want it free floating, so layer the bottom and sides of the barrel with tape (wide electrical or painters tape would be fine) Layer it up enough to give you the clearance you need. Just make sure to bring the tape up high enough on the barrel as to make for a nice clean edge after you do the wipe down.
