Hello all. Are Winchester small rifle primers ok (safe) to use in .223 /5.56 loads for my AR-15s? Are they too soft and therefor risk of slamfire? I'd be happy to use CCI military, but I bought 5000 (at a great price) before I was aware of the difference in "hardness".

They're fine. Winchester used to plate them a silver color. They were the favored primer for highpower rifle shooting.

Since Olin's chosen to skip that (to keep prices down) the primers are now a natural brass color. Some think they are softer than the older, plated primers.

Rem 6 1/2s are not recommended for 223/556 type pressures. Remington states this on their site. Sierra has a separate load section for the AR-15 and I believe they use Rem 7 1/2s for their work-ups.

I've used CCI, Feds, Winnies and Rems and I've had a few pierced primers here and there, but those were my doing, on my work ups, not an outright primer cup failure.

The short answer is as long as your loads are not on the hot end of the scale they will be ok, but if your loads are hot or heavy bullet match loads, the thicker primers like the CCI 450 mag, br4 match, Rem 7 1/2 or fed 205M match are a better choice because they are thicker.
