Looking to buy a NEW set of calipers, settled on the mitutoyo 500-196-30 but I see a wide variety of pricing from $85 ish up to mid $100’s and some inferences to counterfeiting

Any input on a best supplier?
    TIA

Great choice...I've had a pair of these going on about 19 years now. Bought them at my 1st co-op job as a machinist.

Any reputable industrial supplier should be good to go.
I show a cost of about $130 on MSC. $136 from McMaster Carr.

I would be wary of amazon, especially 3rd party sellers. Prime opportunity for counterfeit.
If it is sold directly from amazon, you are more than likely good.
You could always contact Mitutoyo with your serial number after purchase to verify authenticity.

Just bought one through Amazon once I recieved them I performed all the checks to ensure authenticity which looks to be good. I love everything about them except no auto off. I've already left them on twice. Before this I used a very decent made in china caliper it's been smooth and consistent for the few years I've had them. I bought another cheap set a year or so ago and basically got the opposite. Very good investment with the Mititoyo's.

I leave mine on all the time. I think I'm two years on this battery. I wouldn't beat yourself up over it.

I can testify to that, the knockoff draws a sick amount of current on standby just sitting on the bench . fucking sick of always walking in to use it, and the screen going into brown-out . pop in a new battery and it GTG, but for the average novice, that is the BIG tell . saying .." ChiCom knockoff "

Personally have the coolant proof version. Ip 66 I think (had for a few years). I work as a machinist and don't have to have my own tools anymore. I would recommend going with the coolant proof ones. Auto on off and always work. They are more reliable than the non coolant version. They also seem to handle being dirty better as well.

Yes they are more expensive but they last forever. You get what you pay for. Same as with scopes bipods or anything else. Don't cheap out.

And if you think that is expensive you don't know measuring instruments. Check out a 126-137. Or a mitutoyo 568. Or a fowler trimos v4. Or a mahr federal umaxum. I use those everyday.
