At least a 5 gallon gas can, full. Plan fuel stops and keep tank full when you can. Even driving across the country, but in the mountains for sure. If you get off and away from I-80 big truck stops, basically any road besides the interstates, fuel stations are hit or miss. Especially if weather is bad, snow, wind, it gets windy....wow. some stations run out of fuel, waiting for fuel truck delays, and way far apart. No one thinks about how few gas stations there are.

Keep your head on a swivel, the 2 legged animals are more of a worry than the 4. Dont let anyone venture off alone hiking or get too far away.. Try not to look like vacationers.

Understood, thats why I should have mentioned when going into the wilderness.

There's no need in the park. It's summer, there's people everywhere. Unless you just take off and disregard any trails you're never really in the wilderness.

I don't get worried unless I'm getting less than 10mpg. When I'm getting 6-7 towing the camper I have to stop every 150 miles.
Most vehicles driven normally are 3-500 miles on a tank. There's no reason to carry extra gas if you never let it get below 1/4 tank.

But yes, there aren't gas stations every 15-20 miles like further east.

Yep, pretty accurate and what most residents do.

Winter I don't let the tank go under 1/2, but I'm in the sticks and idle a lot in the work truck. Spare fuel is for when you're taking goat trails up the mountains or cruising/camping in the high deserts, not really necessary in Wyoming under normal tourist traveling. Even with the tiny Taco tank, the only time you see a gas tank in the back of my truck is when I also have a chainsaw in the back and it's full of mixed gas or I'm getting diesel for the tractor.
