Guys,
I have been loading and shooting like mad for my DTA SRS .338 LM 1-10" twist. After my first testing of several powders for 300 gr Lapua Scenar:
Win S 780
RL 25
H1000
IMR 7828
Retumbo

And a thread that you all helped me out with, I settled on OCW test of H1000 from 90.6 gr to 91.4 gr in .2 increments. Got a good showing at 91.2. After shooting those 15 shots I looked down the barrel and was impressed by the amount of fouling on the bottom of the barrel.

I cleaned, did another OCW at 91.2 to test seating depth. First two shots in 4 out of 5 groups were touching, and then every next shot was way off at 1-1.5" away. Again I looked down the barrel and after only 15 shots the barrel had a LOT of fouling on the bottom of the barrel.

This is my complete load:
300 gr Lapua Scenar
New Hornady brass
Remington 9 1/2 M
91.2 gr H1000
Seating depth in the last test was at lands out to .02 from lands.

The first Magnum round I loaded for was a 300 WSM and that was two years ago right in the middle of the Obama scare. Rem 9 1/2 was the only magnum primer I could get my hands on. My one thought is that the primers I am using are not burning all the powder and that is the extreme fouling that I am seeing.

I have read for 2 days straight on this and other forums about powders. The popular opinion on H1000 is that it is both clean burning (which was not my finding) and temperature stable (which is valuable for me here in Vegas).

Unless I can get some good ideas, I am ready to move on to either:

RL 25 which gave me pretty good accuracy the one time I shot it, but in my reading is not very stable and can swing hugely from lot to lot.

Or Retumbo, which gave me shitty accuracy in the one load I tried, but seems to be liked by most.

Any thoughts would help, and would be appreciated,
Ty

Re: Yes, another .338 LM Powder thread.

I've loaded for many different .338LM's and have always ended up settling on Retumbo. This is the load I'm currently using in a CIP length AI mag, and has worked well in several different rifles:

300gr SMK
95.0gr Retumbo
3.685" OAL (.005" off lands)
CCI 250
Lapua brass

This is the first and only rifle I've loaded with the CIP length mags, but using standard AI mags and seating to 3.620" OAL has always produced great results. Please note, this is a compressed load and a bit on the hot side. Pressure signs are very mild so I have no problem with the load.

Velocity will depend on barrel length of course, but out of my current 1:10 26" Krieger I'm getting approximately 2825fps.

Re: Yes, another .338 LM Powder thread.

I'm about to start load development for my factory 338LM rem700 MLR, thinking about 300 smk, Retumbo, is there anyone with experience loading for this gun and that would share info so i can narrow this down?
I like the b.c. of the 300 smk over that of the 250gn if this gun likes them?
Thanks

Thanks VTI,
I'll try out some Retumbo.

Hi, Fireguyty,

What was the oal you settled on (to ogive)?

I just received my DTA SRS and i'm working up loads for .338... I ended up getting 2.977 on the Lapua Scenar 300 grain.

Did you ever sort out your primer theory on fouling? I'm planning on using the federal 215M's. I hope I don't experience equal fouling problems with the H-1000, because i bought 8 pounds of it....ha.
