Guys,
I have been loading and shooting like mad for my DTA SRS .338 LM 1-10" twist. After my first testing of several powders for 300 gr Lapua Scenar:
Win S 780
RL 25
H1000
IMR 7828
Retumbo
And a thread that you all helped me out with, I settled on OCW test of H1000 from 90.6 gr to 91.4 gr in .2 increments. Got a good showing at 91.2. After shooting those 15 shots I looked down the barrel and was impressed by the amount of fouling on the bottom of the barrel.
I cleaned, did another OCW at 91.2 to test seating depth. First two shots in 4 out of 5 groups were touching, and then every next shot was way off at 1-1.5" away. Again I looked down the barrel and after only 15 shots the barrel had a LOT of fouling on the bottom of the barrel.
This is my complete load:
300 gr Lapua Scenar
New Hornady brass
Remington 9 1/2 M
91.2 gr H1000
Seating depth in the last test was at lands out to .02 from lands.
The first Magnum round I loaded for was a 300 WSM and that was two years ago right in the middle of the Obama scare. Rem 9 1/2 was the only magnum primer I could get my hands on. My one thought is that the primers I am using are not burning all the powder and that is the extreme fouling that I am seeing.
I have read for 2 days straight on this and other forums about powders. The popular opinion on H1000 is that it is both clean burning (which was not my finding) and temperature stable (which is valuable for me here in Vegas).
Unless I can get some good ideas, I am ready to move on to either:
RL 25 which gave me pretty good accuracy the one time I shot it, but in my reading is not very stable and can swing hugely from lot to lot.
Or Retumbo, which gave me shitty accuracy in the one load I tried, but seems to be liked by most.
Any thoughts would help, and would be appreciated,
Ty
