your favorite 44 mag levergun load

Re: your favorite 44 mag levergun load

A good stout load of 2400 with a 240 grain bullet that I cast with a heavy crimp. No gas check. Any where from 1700-1800 fps---depending on barrel length, and pressure signs. I consider a good stout load to be in the 19.5 grains area. I shoot some hotter, but do not recommend without working up to it. The crimp is very important with 2400. And barrel length is also important for velocity and what lube to use on the bullet. Tom.

Re: your favorite 44 mag levergun load

I had an old Winchester 94 chambered in 44 mag. I had very good luck with 240 grain half jacket hollow points. I loaded it with IMR 4227, 25.0 grains. I did record it had a roll crimp in a canalure. I did not record the primer in my note book. The muzzle velocity I have is average of 1750 fps. But the chronograph I had at that time wasn't especially accurate.

The rifle had iron sights only and I recorded 2 1/4" groups at 100 yards. For a brush gun, that was pretty good to me.
