The other day I went to Gander Mountain and purchased a Yugoslavian Tokarev M57 for $220. I took it to the range last Tuesday and I must say that I am very pleased with the overall quality and feel of the weapon. Of course it can't compete with high end firearms but for the money I think this is a great pistol. It has nine round capacity and came with two mags.I really like the grip because its longer than the Russian and Polish versions(so for me it's easier to handle) and the quality in my opinion is just as good if not better. The ammo is cheap (Polish surplus) and the accuracy was also very surprising (considering that this is a mass produced Communist era firearm).I also like the sights on the weapon because they are smaller which makes it easier to aim at smaller targets, not very tacticool so to speak but I like it. I also liked the solid build and the 1911 feel and similarity. This is a great gun and it does not put constraints on your budget. I was wondering if any of you guys had experience with the Tokarevs and what you think about them?

Re: Yugo M57 (7.62x25)

I have two M57's, love them both!

Outstanding guns IMO for what your getting. The ballistics of the 7.62x25 tok round are impressive to the say the least.

A couple weekends back I took one of mine out and played with it over my new Chrono. Needless to say the '80s production Romanian surplus ammo was ridiculously consistent!

Here are my numbers from the session:

Yugo Tok, MD57, 7.62x25, 4.5" bbl
Romanian Surplus, 1984 Headstamp

Overall Averages: (20rds fired)
High: Low: E.S.: Ave.: S.D.:
1456 1429 27.25 1442 11.525

I like this round so much I currently have two project builds in the works, one for a bolt action rifle built on a savage action, and one an AR SBR upper. Can't wait to get them done!

One thing I have noticed is the current round of Romanian surplus seems to have dried up.

Hopefully some more will make it's way in!

Re: Yugo M57 (7.62x25)

Thank you for the great input. I too am very impressed with the round, even though my statement is based on personal opinion and not on great statistical info

I really like the power of the round, and the fact that it's cheap makes it even better. After I got the Tok I go to the range more often, since all the ammo is bought in bulk so there is plenty of it. I feel like I'm getting a lot better by shooting more often. Next time I will try to find some of the Romanian surplus. Good luck with your builds (seems like a very interesting project) and once again thanks for the info.

Around my area I have found that a lot of stores have Prvi Partizan and Winchester 7.62x25 ammo in their inventory. However, I still prefer to buy in bulk because it's cheaper if you were to compare it by the cost of one round.
