Last weekend my buddy salmonaxe and I added a custom fit recoil pad with adjustable length of pull to my 5R milspec. I'm VERY excited about how well it turned out! Haven't had a chance to take her to the range yet, but the fit is MUCH better. Here's the parts, process and pics..

Parts:
Pachmayr D750B Decelerator grind-to-fit recoil pad (1”, large)
Kick Eez spacers
Allen bolts, t-nuts
Loctite Poxy Pak
5oz. fishing weights

Process:
Put stock in freezer over night.
Chiseled off old recoil pad.
Planed/sanded base of stock.
Bored holes in new recoil pad and spacers to fit allen bolts.
Inserted and glued t-nuts onto spacer/new base.
Ground off excess t-nut for flush fit.
Bolted pad to spacers, traced base of stock and measured for fit.
Ground and sanded pad and spacers as one unit to flush fit with stock.
Roughed up inside of new base for better adhesion to stock.
Test fit counter weights in stock, glued counterweights together.
Measured and drilled screw holes in new base.
Bored base holes to countersink screws.
Drilled pilot holes for screws in stock.
Bored bolt holes in stock to ensure adjustability in bolt depth.
Glued counter weights to inside of stock.
Glued base to stock and screwed into place.
Planed/sanded new base for flush fit.
Cut and sanded excess glue.
Bolt new recoil pad and spacers into place.
Done!

Process also included lots of masking, taping, test fitting, t-nut and bolt waxing, polishing of spacers and t-nuts and waiting for glue to dry.

thanks SA!

Re: custom recoil pad on a 5R

I have to be honest. Despite all the nice McMs, adjustable HS Precision stocks, etc etc, its refreshing to see someone make it on his own.

Good work.

Re: custom recoil pad on a 5R

Excellent work. Easier said than done.

Re: custom recoil pad on a 5R

This was fun to do. If I had a belt sander, it would have been way faster.

Re: custom recoil pad on a 5R

Thanks guys! A McMillan was outside of my current build budget.. but this mod along with the Karsten will definitely tie me over

Re: custom recoil pad on a 5R

You need to get with the guy with the flush cups on his HS precision. Da law Dawg or something. The two of you are making some cool mods. Nice job.

Re: custom recoil pad on a 5R

That turned out awesome! I just put flush cups in mine because I was inspired by Dawg. I'm going to do this one next!

What size kick eez did you use?

Re: custom recoil pad on a 5R

Nice job, looks good. They should put a removable recoil pad on them to begin with.

Re: custom recoil pad on a 5R

Yeah I had to send my 5R stock to HS Precision. I needed a total of 15". They got the stock to 14" and gave it a 1" pad. Then a fresh paint job. It cost 168.00 shipped back to me. Waiting to get it back now.

Re: custom recoil pad on a 5R

Wow looks good. I've thought about doing that to my 700 but I'm not that confadent in my craftsmanship haha

Re: custom recoil pad on a 5R

as someone said before.."it's great to see someone make it on his own" brings a smile here. since you just live down the street (everett here) might be calling on ya someday. smile

Re: custom recoil pad on a 5R

Sweet, I had been contemplating doing this, after seeing this its a for sure.

Question, the rectangular hole where you put the weights, was that already there, or did you chisel that out too?
