Republicans love to talk conservative small government talk, when they are not in power and are not in a position to do anything about it. Once Republicans are in power they reveal they are in favor of endless spending, endless war, and endless expansion of government power at the expense of states and citizens.
The greatest thing Trump has done is that he turned the Republican Party upside down and he has destroyed neo-conservativism, not as an ideology but as an institutional unifying force that dominated the GOP. There are still clowns, ideologues, and self-styled intellectuals writing books and pushing neo-con crap on the masses, but the GOP of Ronald Reagan and George W Bush is gone and is not likely to come back.
Trump has unleashed the era of right-wing populism and this is now the dominant ideology of the GOP rank-and-file.
If the GOP establishment betrays Trump in November 2024, then the ultimate collapse of the GOP as an institution is inevitable and we should seek to hasten it.
Trump is a step in the right direction even if his policies don't accomplish the restoration of the Republic.
