Suppressors Dumb Q: which TBAC SR muzzle device for the least cleaning patch hangups?

Not talking about cleaning the brake itself!

Bought a Dominus SR a while back. Still in jail.

Q: Which of their SR brakes catch the least patches within the brake itself when retracting the cleaning rod?

Or, put another way, which brake plays the nicest with cleaning patches/jags? Like when you’re cleaning the bore.

EDIT: Usually, I pop just the patch out of the bore and not the screwed-on thick bit of the spear-point jag, which is the diameter of the rod. As I retract the rod, the patch falls off. With a brake, the patch will probably(?) fall off within the brake.

I know I could probably just push the patch all of the way through the brake, but it’s be nice not to run the rod over the crown.

TBAC offers two different SR muzzle devices, a brake and a “non-timed” brake.

Note: I shoot 100% suppressed. So recoil reduction without a suppressor isn’t a factor for me here.

Regular brake, needs timing with peel washers (otherwise I look dumb at the range without the suppressor attached 🤡)

Non-timed brake, just spin on
1726174917300.jpeg

1726174962588.jpeg

As someone who has never owned a brake, I have no experience cleaning a rifle with an attached brake. Obviously the brake will be red-locktited on, as per TBAC, so I’m not spinning it off each time I clean.

I imagine it’s easiest to fish stuck patches out of the the regular brake, but then (for looks in my case) it’s the fussiest to install.

I’d rather just get the non-timed brake and just spin it one without the peel washer dance, but it looks like it has the smallest interior volume and smallest port openings…but it has 8 ports vs 4.

Kinda dumb question here, splitting hairs, but hey, but I’m bored and my Dominus is calling lol. Humor me.

New 3-18x50 Match Pro ED

Heads-up on a new, smaller Match Pro ED in 3-18x50mm.

I posted on Reddit already so it's mostly copy/paste on the details here.

It’s a baby MPED, but with a few significant differences from the bigger brother.

  • Magnification range is obviously 3-18x now vs 5-30x.
  • Objective lens is down from 56mm to 50mm.
  • The above helped bring weight down to 28.4 ounces.
  • Illumination has shake awake. The controls are like we’re used to, but after 10 minutes of no movement it shuts itself down. Pick it up and it turns on like a red dot with shake awake.
  • The elevation knob is what you’re used to with the big brother. Same slick zero stop.
  • Windage knob’s different. It’s capped with a non-locking turret. Protects the knob a little more, and I figure plenty of people will be using these in applications where windage dialing isn’t as common.
  • The reticle is the same DM2 as the 5-30x, but subtensions needed to be adjusted a tad. A few line thicknesses had to gain some weight. The center dot is the same.
  • Total elevation is generous at 40 MRAD.
Like the other Match Pro launches – The thing’s available today & now here: https://www.bushnell.com/scopes/shop-all-scopes/match-pro-ed-3-18x50-riflescope/BU-MP31850DMI.html Hopefully you can see it in person at some stores soon as well.

I’ll do my best to give answers on any questions you may have.

Yellowjacket Infestation

Yellowjackets built a nest behind the patio light two months ago. Instead of calling a pest control service, my landlord sprayed insulation foam and sealed up the only entry/exit (screw hole in between the lights).

Then they started going under the siding. He had another tenant (works for a pest control company) come out and spray something under the siding. Thought they died but they kept coming back. I bought $100 worth of yellow jacket sprays and killed a bunch of them. Despite all this, they’re still there and now they’re coming into the house through the gaps in the sliding door, window in our toddler’s room, and the basement too. I’ve sealed up most of these gaps using some spackle. Got better but we still kill at least 5-7 yellowjackets a day in the house.

The landlord and that pest control guy came back and looked around and did nothing. He is not taking this seriously at all.

I’m thinking of calling a pest control service but heard that their insurance doesn’t cover cutting into walls or removing siding etc. Assuming they need the landlord’s permission to do that and this guy doesn’t wanna spend a cent on this. I’ve told the landlord that he needs to find and get the nest removed by professionals.

If he doesn’t do anything in the next day or two, I am thinking of calling the department of public health and reporting him. I’m feeling helpless and not sure what to do. Thoughts on how to deal/proceed with this?

Accuracy International - Alternative Barrel Clamp Torque Specs?

Was talking to a friend who has many more years experience than I with the Accuracy International AT308, and he and his department run Hornady TAP ELD Precision 168gr exclusively as a SWAT Sniper. While I've had a hard time getting this ammo to group tightly despite its superior ballistics on paper, he and his guys are getting notably better accuracy and precision with it, from the Lothar-Walther 1:12 20/24 inch barrel. The difference is, I'm torqued to 49 inch/lbs, while he and his guys are at 55 inch lbs, so 6 in/lbs over factory spec.

Is this common? Have folks here played with different torque specs for the barrel clamp screw? And, what grease if any are you guys putting on your barrel threads before screwing and clamping it in?

Sent my gun to Whidden for testing

Just letting everyone know my experience. I couldn't be happier. They make the whole process about as easy and as stream line as it could be. Everyone person i spoke with knew their stuff and was so kind.

I called, paid for the appt, they sent me a shipping label. I took the gun to the closest UPS access point and that was the end of my effort. Not due to them but UPS was running behind and Whidden went out of their way to get my gun, I actually missed my appt because of the delay. Whidden kindly made the adjustment, tested my gun in the next spot available. They got me the results with their recommendation, the gun and chosen ammo was out the door the next day heading to me.

I only had Lapua tested because that is the only line they test out to a 100 yards atm. If you shoot more than 50 yards, you need to test farther than 50 yards. 100 yards is the separator to me.

If you need ammo you should call them, it couldn't have went any better, easier on my end and very happy with the results. Great People to work with.

SWAT rifle scope

I’m sure this has been discussed and I’ve read a few posts regarding it but they seem to be older.

We are in the process of getting new scopes for our swat rifles (700p in 308). Realistically any engagement we have is under 100 yards (not there couldn’t be something longer, but historically very short distance).

I shoot prs, and am a FFP guy. However , FOV is super important as well as making shots at lower power and actually being able to see the reticle (low light or dark backgrounds). Most of my shots are taken at 4-6x, but I like having the ability to zoom in if needed. I need to have the ability to have a wide fov to see a large area while I’m at 65-80 yards away. we almost always dial, and Christmas tree type reticles are really not needed.

I’m leaning towards a 2-10x in SFP just for fov, I’d like to be at the 3-15x , but the fov at lower power is much more limited .

I’ve seen the nf nxs 2-10, as well as 3-15. Both are sfp. Leupold doesn’t seem to offer anything in their tactical line with sfp. I have shot Burris xtr3s, but its ffp and the reticle is super thin.

Our team leader is big (won’t budge) on buying American products.

Any advice?

Long Range Gas Gun Optics

My 6.5 SP10M 22” came in recently and I’m really having a hard time picking glass for it. I do any and all types of long range shooting at my family ranch. We stretch out to 1 mile occasionally but typically shoot 1400 and in. A 7-35 ATACR seems like an easy choice but it is quite heavy and lacking bottom end for the coyote hunting we regularly do at the ranch.

I beat the crap out of guns/optics and need something strong, not too heavy, good fov at bottom end and a reticle that works at the lower end.

My top picks currently are
Burris XTR 3 5.5-30 (reticle super thin)
Mk5 5-25 (I worry about tracking, rigidity)
NX8 2.5-20 (wide fov but reticle is useless at bottom end)
NX8 4-30 (enough elevation for my mile shooting?)
Atacr 4-20 and 5-25 and 7-35 (heavy for already heavy rifle)

Please help me stop tormenting myself over this choice.

Note: 12 oclock red dot will be mounted above optic likely in a badger comm max

SOLD Shorty Origin 6.5CM - Parting Out (Price Drop)

Built it and have a baby on the way. Should have held off since I don't need another gun to do load development for.

Caverns Armory (Zermatt Origin) 308 Action
Triggertech Primary
Preferred Barrels 6.5CM Chopped to 16" 1:8T
Barrel was profiled to clearance the EFR
Badger EFR was shorted by two picatinny slots to clearance the barrel.
McMillan A1-3 Adjustable w. Grayboe M5 DBM

I have a pic rail for the front of you want to drill another hole behind the sling stud.

Rifle weighs 13lbs with the Mk5 3.6-18. I rattle canned the barrel after it was profiled over the cerakoteand it's a little messy, but is hid by the EFR. Easy to strip off if you want to.

I put 50 rounds down the barrel, haven't done load dev. Prior owner I bought it from had a few hundred down it first. Seems to shoot really well with 41-42gr H4350 with 140ELDs in both Starline and Hornady brass with loads I had for other rifles (velocity was 2550-2640fps depending on the charge and brass).

No scope, suppressor, bipod, or mags. $2,000 shipped to you.

Dropped to $1850 on 10/17.

Impulse purchases that just worked out better than expected.

I'm usually pretty careful with how I spend our money but I'm also guilty of have the few impulse purchases here and then despite trying to be careful. Sometimes it works out, usually it's a waste of money. But for those rare instances where impromptu purchases far exceed expectations, figured we'd start a thread to talk about them.

I'll start it off, a couple of months ago, we were at a popular membership club and ran across some pots and pans that were a little bit different than the standard teflon coated options, dang if they weren't the best pots & pans I ever used. We even went back to buy another set for my Bride's sister as a home warming gift because they were that impressive.

Any other similar experiences?
