Does anyone still use case gauges?

I still use them.

I called redding today because I bought a set (sizer and bullet seater) of redding competition full length bushing dies. I had only ever sized brand new brass with it as I only bought this set about 6-8 months ago and rand about 500-600 pieces of new brass for uniformity and neck tension with a mandrel after sizing. Before this I had always just used plain die sets with expander balls.

Well today I started loading some of my once fired brass in that caliber and it wouldn't fit a case gauge.....I checked everything thinking maybe I was overlooking something simple as of course I am human and no....it just won't fit a case gauge.

so I grabbed my RCBS match master set (which I actually like better) and after adjusting it to bump about 2 thousandths, it fits a case gauge, snug but it fits.

So I called up Redding to inquire and the older gentleman on the phone asked me "well does it chamber?" and of course it does since it was shot in that rifle. to which he replied "case gauges don't mean ANYTHING and you shouldn't bother with one". I explained to him I have several rifles in that caliber and will most definitely make probably 5 or 6 more in the next year or two and would prefer to have ammo that I know will fit them all......He didn't appreciate that at all. I said thank you and ended my call.

So I wonder, am I the only one left using case guages? I use one for every caliber I load. While it's true someone could make decent ammo without one.....

If I try to picture someone NOT using a case gauge all I see if a old fudd using a lee hand loader making 5 rounds of 30/06 or something similar for dear season so he can use three of them to sight in his ruger model 70 for the season and then miss with the other two.

PRS Talk Explain the hype

Just curious about the hype behind the .25 cal trend in PRS.

When looking at the .25 bullets available, I'm struggling to get the point in the trend.

a 6.5 mm 135gr Atip compared to a .25 135gr LRHT, there is a slight advantage to the .25 but really minimal ( .321 VS .334)

It there a .25 139gr Atip with a G7 > .350 or similar BC/weight gain being used/tested par some happy few?

Firearms Staccato XL Limited Edition (Island Barrel)

For sale is a very lightly used Staccato XL Limited Edition with TiN Island Barrel. I've put approximately 750 rounds through it between 2 USPSA matches and a couple practice sessions. I really like the pistol but want to purchase a MPA DS9 for dedicated competition use. Overall it’s in outstanding condition (some minor scratches in the magwell from use). This will make a great competition gun or addition to someone's collection. It includes 2 magazines, the case, and the Holosun 507Comp (purchased with this pistol). Our Staccato rep said they only made 600 of these. Will not ship overseas or to California, Illinois, NY or DC. If you're local to the Colorado Springs area, I'm more than happy to meet up. Will complete transfer through a FFL. Asking $6000. If you have any questions, please reach out.

Ballistic calculators disagree with my actual elevation amounts - help please!

Hi all,

I have two rifles chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor (Ruger RPR and Accuracy International AT-X) both with Vortex Razor HD Gen 2 scopes. I shoot at a range with known distances from 100-1200 yards in 100 yard increments.

My rifles are zeroed for 100 yards and I have dope settings for 100, 200, 300 and 600 yards. I've tried a variety of different calculators (Hornady 4DOF, Vortex, several others). They all seem consistent in their come up values which don't match either of my rifles. For instance with the RPR at 600 yards they state around 12.8MOA come up while I have to actually dial 14.5 - a big difference! With the AI, the calculators state 1.35 come up at 200 yards when I actually have to dial -0.25 from my 100 yard zero.

I'm using a Garmin chrono so have accurate MV. I'm using Hornady ELDM 147gr factory ammo so know the bullet weight, am specifying barrel twist, sight height over barrel, temperature etc.

Is there an explanation why the calculators seem so far off vs my two rifles?

I want to shoot at 1000 yards and have no dope for that. How can I use a calculator to determine that? Should I change the bullet G7 BC to accurately match the come up at 600 yards and then use the 1000 yard figure the calculator then suggests?

All gems of experience welcome!

Thanks.

Then there is this, boy's & girls

These have been around for years, but closely guarded. Now it seems the worm has turned.
There are also very, very small devices, that have the ability to take out a single device in a single office,...

Have you had an adjustable gas block detent fail?

I have a .300 BLK that suddenly started having cycling/feed issues and I'm early in diagnosing it but I think I have a couple of issues. One being at least one blown primer (AAC 110 AMAX) and the other I think is the SLR adjustable gas block. It used to run great, then just went to hell on me.

So the primer issue aside for a second, I tore everything down to give it a thorough inspection. I noticed the adjuster screw had no detent. Turn it and no clicks. So I removed the screw and there is no detent inside, just the screw. How in the heck can the detent just disappear? Can they fail and get sent through the gas system? I did not have the adjuster more than about halfway out which should be physically impossible for the detent to go downstream. I'm really scratching my head on this one.

Maybe I screwed up and turned it out too far and don't remember. Not sure but thought I would ask if anyone else has had one fail and if so, did the detent go downstream or is that impossible? Since it's missing, I can't see how big it is LOL.
