Multiple questions on .308 Brass

So I’ve been reloading a bit but have just started on .308/7.62 loads. Reloading for a IWI Tavor 7. Already worked out basic loads but I have some concerns and not even sure if I should be concerned about it.

First concern is my brass. There is a big variety on the cases I have. I have a majority of mixed military brass. There is a big difference in case weights which in turn causes internal case size differences. Most of the military is 175-179 grn. But some weigh as much as 185, mostly IVI headstamps. And then I have a small batch of BHS Match that weighs 172.

Because most manuals are listing max loads as compressed for .308 does this play more into safety issues. Should I be sorting my brass by weight with this much differences in case weights. What are signs of over pressurized loads to be watchful for.

I’ll be using either 4064 or mostly Varget and 150 or 168 grn bullets. I’m looking for a consistent load that can be accurate, but can also be reloaded in quantity for safety. What should my goal fps be on an average load?

Might be over thinking this. What are your thoughts. Thanks for any help.

Factory Threaded Tikkas

I am looking to purchase a 223 rifle to use as a trainer for a long range hunting class I want to attend. I use the A419 sidewinder muzzle device system for my cans and everything I have is either threaded in 5/8x24 or 3/4x24.

To continue the ease of this system, is my only option to get a factory threaded Tikka in 5/8x24 the Super Varmint Roughtech? Only asking cause I’m trying to keep the weight down to replicate a hunting rifle, but don’t really want to get a super lite then have it threaded in 1/2x28. Open to any other suggestions if you have them.

Accessories 24in 6 ARC

I built this 6mm arc ar15 for PRS style matches. I really enjoy the cartridge and it does very well in matches but my priorities have changed and I don't really need the rifle anymore. This upper has a 24in BSF carbon fiber barrel with a 1:7.5 twist. I run nosler 105s and 107s and 2700fps+. The upper also has an enhanced jp bolt so you can run hotter loads without worrying about it. Looking for $1600 or trade for the upper.

Does "Over-Annealing" Impact Shot Dynamics?

A couple of weeks ago, while talking about annealing, @918v mentioned that he saw velocity drop load to load when he annealed every shot. He mentioned that he has shifted to annealing less than every shot (I think he mentioned 1/4, but I can't find it - perhaps he will post here). He called it "over-annealing", but that technically means you've cooked a case by getting it too hot - we need to come up with another label here...

Per AMP, annealing every time - or even annealing multiple times in a row - does not offer different results.

So, which is it?

I tend to agree with much of what @918v posts, so I don't discount what he's saying. At the same time, AMP is certainly in the know here too.

I decided to run what will likely be the first of many tests in this regard.

What I did:

- I took new Lapua brass and prepped as follows: uniformed flash holes and primer pockets, trimmed/chamferred/deburred, mandrel, neck lube
- After the trim step, I annealed every piece of this new brass. With five pieces, I annealed them four times, letting them cool completely between annealing
- I then primed, charged and seated (using an AMP Press)

Here are the plots (annealed 4x in blue):
08-Jul-2024 13_45 Multi Anneal Comparison.png

Notes:
- As you can see, the 4x annealed cases show markedly lower seating forces.
- This is likely to have been caused by the brass being slightly softer.
- If these two sets of cases were shot next to each other (and I will do so hopefully tomorrow, but I might have Covid...), you would expect to see slightly lower velocity from those with lower seating forces.
- This is not 100% analogous to annealing four times over four shots because in that case, the brass would be getting worked during each shot, so I wouldn't expect this much of a drop

What's next? I don't know. I have to noodle on what would be a good test here to see how much this impacts things - I also hope I don't have Covid so I can test these tomorrow.

Eight things Europeans criticize the US for but we say thanks

Straight from Babylon Bee but pretty neat and might not even be considered satire. I love #1 & #5

  1. You guys have enough guns to blow up the world four times over!: Heck yes we do.
  2. You don't speak any language but English: Because we're winners. Appreciate the reminder.
  3. You call football "soccer" and you're terrible at it: Yeah, we're not all gay. Thanks for noticing!
  4. Nobody uses public transit: Absolutely. Isn't freedom amazing?
  5. You still believe in God: Thanks, pretty cool having the light of Reason.
  6. You have military bases in every country: Aw, you're welcome little bro.
  7. Your portion sizes are ridiculous: We know, isn't this 72-ounce steak beautiful? Brings tears to your eyes.
  8. You don't have universal healthcare: Yup, it's pretty cool getting to see a doctor instead of waiting until you're dead.

Federal 308 Premium Gold Medal 168gr Sierra MK velocity out of my AR10

Good evening to all. I am a little confused, and I need your help if possible.
I am shooting the federal Premium Gold medal 168gr Sierra MK out of my 22" barrel AR 10 suppressed (rifle built by myself, suppressor Dead Air Nomad 30), and I am super pleased with the performances of both the rifle and the ammo, but I am struggling to grasp the difference between the manufacturer-declared speed and the one I get from my rifle (esteemed). Unfortunately, I do not have access to a Chronograph for the moment, but I am using a ballistic app (Chaingun Elite) that I find very accurate with all my other calibers, 6mmARC, 6.5CM, 6.5Grendel, 224 Valk, etc. Now my range extends to 675 yards so I can validate the trajectory in the app at decent distances, usually, I do it at 550yards, and while it is not uncommon to witness up to 75-100 yards discrepancies between what a manufacturer declares out of a 24" barrel and my rifles, the Federal 308 seems a little out of scale. Federal declares 2650 fps (from a 24" I assume) so I used 2550 fps as a starting point with my 22" barrel but at 550 Yards I was pretty low. I had to go up 2 MOA to get on target pretty close to the center, and when I validated the firing solution in the app, it returned me a velocity of 2259 fps, which is like 400 fps lower than Federal declared and 300 less than I was expecting. Can anyone help me to understand what is going on? Am I missing something? I have adjusted everything for the current weather conditions and zeroed at 100 yards before shooting at a distance. Thank you in advance.

Want a Tikka Arctic but cannot make a decision between 308 and 6.5 Creed

Yes, I’ve read the Arctic is too expensive, a rip-off, and too heavy, etc. but I want one nonetheless. Uncle Sam has given me some of my money back and I’m going to use it to scratch this itch. My dilemma after finally admitting this problem is I cannot decide between 308 and 6.5 Creedmore as it pertains to this particular rifle. I have several other rifles in. 308 and like them but no rifles chambered for the 6.5. The better accuracy and less recoil appeals to me. However, the Canadian Rangers version is in 308 making that combination a classic. Does anyone with an arctic in 308 regret not getting the 6.5, or vice versa? Thank you for your time.

Reloading order of operations

Real quick… for those of you guys running a FL bushing sizing die and a mandrel. Are you mandreling/trimming before or after you tumble to get the lubricant off? I’m dry tumbling with corncob. Running 223 rem.

Currently my operation is:
Deprime
Tumble clean (corncob)
Anneal
Lube
Shoulder bump w/ FL bushing sizing die
Mandrel
Tumble to remove lube
Trim/deburr/chamfer
Prime/charge and seat bullets

opinions on PLA?

a while ago some guy-don't remember who-posted a long diatribe about how incompetent the russian military was/is; how china in so inferior militarily to us. went on about superiority of US military in all spheres. at the time he claimed all kinds of inside knowledge and experience. don't recall seeing him since. had the idea that he was a fed schill or plant but not sure. those statements were contrary to opinions expressed in most places from "our side". opinions?
