Kudos for MDT Field Stock

I ordered an MDT Field Stock for my son's CZ-455 during the Black Friday sale. I just got around to putting the rifle, originally a 27" Ultra-Luxe, in the new stock Monday. Then I did a quick range session with the rig.

I am quite impressed with the stock - certainly an upgrade from the Tupperware stocks Tikka likes to use (I can't speak to CZ's synthetic stocks beyond saying I handled a 457 in a LGS and it felt like a toy). @Mark_Dorman did a nice review of this stock (for a 10/22) back before Christmas.

Of interest to potential buyers is that my son's 455 shoots significantly better in the Field Stock* than it does in the original stock or the Boyd stock from a long-gone 455 Tacticool. It doesn't shoot quiiiii-te as well as my Bartlein-barreled Vudoo at 50 yards, but I'm impressed. I haven't had time to take it out further yet; the goal for this rig is to use in a little 100-yard-max monthly match.

A few other notes:
  • I tightened the stock screws to 40 inch-pounds. None of the squishy feeling I've encountered in other synthetic stocks (urp Tikka).
  • The whole rig, with SWFA SS fixed-16x scope (~24 ounces with rings), weighs in at just under 10 pounds. Stock weighs just over three pounds.
  • The rifle balances in front of the mag well - not bad for a pencil barrel (albeit a long pencil barrel).
  • "Conventional wisdom" is that a thin barrel usually performs better with some support under it. I tried both ways - putting a block of stiff foam between barrel and fore-end at different distances in front on the tenon. For this rifle at least, best performance was with the long, thin barrel free-floating.
  • I considered posting this in the Bolt Action Rifles forum because, were I to have any use for a new Tikka - awesome rifles but horrible plastic stock - I'd pretty much jump at one of these. But then I have no experience with the Field Stock's long-standing competition from KRG et. al. or its Oryx brother.
Anyway. I'm an MDT booster; they have gone above & beyond for me more than once since I started precision rifle competition almost eight years ago. I have three rifles in ACC chassis, and two now-gone bolt guns were in LSS-XL chassis. Nice to know there is a solid, inexpensive option in their lineup.
--------
* Late edit: I need to qualify this statement. Last time I shot this rifle, it was in the "Tacticool" Boyd stock - and when I removed it, the screws were not very tight at all. So the improvement may be more minimal than first impression. I never shot the rifle in the original walnut Ultra-Luxe stock. I will say that the long dwell time of standard-velocity ammo in the 27" barrel makes it imperative that a SOLID follow-through is held, otherwise a near-imperceptible movement will cause a significant flyer.

6CM to ARC?

Recently switched to a 6 Creedmoor for my main bolt action hunting rifle. Instantly wished I had downsized to 6mm a very long time ago, works great and no recoil. Judy chopped the barrel to 16” (preferred length) and I’m getting 2630 with factory ELD-M. Didn’t expect it to slow down that much but it works just fine for me.

Here’s my question of the day… if I’m not a reloader and happy with 2630, why not 6 ARC in an AR? Seems like I’d get better barrel life.

New guy here but experienced!

Hi. Long time shooter already. Mostly i shoot airguns because of low power and sound compared to PBs. And i am pretty old member of the AGN forum.

I have learned PCP airguns so well that i feel its part of my life!

I am also having good times with my shotguns and AR!

Will post more in other threads but be sure i will share all my knowledge to anybody who will need it.

Thanks!

Niko

Advancements in bullet design...

...are all moving towards one thing. Setting aside all terminal ballistics, and only focusing on flight:
Bullet designs have gotten incrementally better since I started shooting in the 1970s. New bullets come out with a slightly higher BC. Yet...

The physics is the physics. We have known, both theoretically/mathematically on paper and through testing, what shape has the lowest drag coefficient and therefore the highest BC since 1947. The Sears-Haack body is the shape of an object with the lowest possible fluid drag.

The more a bullet looks like that the higher BC it's going to have and the slower the delta of speed as drag acts on it as it moves through air. There simply AREN'T "advancements" in bullet design when the most efficient shape possible has been around for 75+ years. Yea, there are materials, bonding, etc., but none of that is going to make it fly any better. Why isn't there a VLD that is literally a Sears-Haack body? Why isn't every competition bullet a Sears-Haack body? Is the symmetrical ogive at the rear some manufacturing or reloading problem? Am I missing something obvious? Really, as I look at the progression of bullets I've used I can literally see them getting more and more like a Sears-Haack. Is there something stopping us from just going directly to it? Is it too costly, or is it not possible to point both ends? I mean, there must be some valid reason I'm missing, because it's not like the best possible shape is a secret. Hell, if it is some manufacturing process problem then why not just weld two flat back bullets together? There is always going to be a market for the best, and we have always known exactly what that is.

Is someone somewhere crafting these for their own use? People are turning monolithic bullets, but I haven't seen one that was literally a Sears-Haack. Why, or are they out there?

Maybe this whole line of thinking is dumb, I don't know, but I've seen a thousand posts about a new bullet design, when there's really only a single one, and every bullet that doesn't care about terminal ballistics wants to be that one design.

Do Pretty Groups Mean Anything?

I guess this is a general question, but it involves a rimfire, so here I am.

I got myself a new T1x, and I am testing types of ammunition at short range. I am zeroing at 35 yards, and I will be moving out to 50 yards once I have favorites. The final goal is to kill squirrels.

I shot several types of ammo the other day at 35, and while an Eley product came in with the smallest groups (0.468"), cheap CCI Blazers shot prettier groups (0.555"). Each group was one nice round hole. The Eley groups were irregular.

Should a shooter conclude anything from the fact that one brand of ammunition shoots nice, round, symmetrical groups?

I was pretty surprised by the Blazers. I also shot CCI Sub-Sonics, and I got a nasty flyer I'm pretty sure I didn't cause.

MPVO for Tactical Games Thoughts/Recommendations

I do Tactical Games competitions and the furthest we've shot out to is about 600 yards. A lot of guys are starting to go with a 3-18 type scope (something like Mk 5 HD) and offset red dot. We will typically have one to two stages where we shoot out to distance 200 - 600. Most distances on other stages are from 50-100 yards for rifle. Precision is paramount in these comps. Every miss is a 10 sec penalty in the workouts/stages.

I typically use a Nightforce ATACR 1-8 and it's a great scope (obviously) and has serviced me well but I don't know too much about the MPVO options out there. Since we are shooting 600 yards would a simple reticle be better (non-Christmas tree type)? Illuminated? 2-12 or 3-18? What's lowest magnification range on both ends you guys would look at? I don't want to get anything that has too much magnification. I would also be using an offset red dot for closer range targets.

I've heard general rule these days is 2x for every 100 yards so a 2-12 might be good but is that going to be much better than my ATACR 1-8? Would I still need an offset red dot for a 2-12 (never looked through one before). I figure a 3-15/18 type scope with offset red dot would probably be best option if I decide to go this route to take advantage of the MPVO type platform.

Any good suggestions and/or thoughts? I've looked at NXS, Vortex, Steiner, Leuopold, etc. I don't want to break the bank but maybe $1000-$1500 range. If I can sell my NX8 maybe higher.

Thanks!

Suppressors Suppressor for AR15 multi cal

Looking to pick up a suppressor specifically for my ARs, .204, 5.56, 6 arc, and .300 BO. What's currently the best value to cover these calibers? Looking for best suppression in a reasonable length ~7". Weight is not a concern but budget is. I see Hux mentioned quite a bit but there seems to be conflicting reports on how well the actually suppress. They are pricey as well. Would something like the Enticer S be a reasonable solution?
