AI Data Centers Are Causing ‘Distortions’ in the Power Grid from Coast to Coast

The rapid growth of AI data centers across the U.S. is not only straining power grids but also distorting the quality of electricity delivered to homes, threatening damage to appliances and increasing fire risks, according to an analysis performed by Bloomberg.
A recent report by Bloomberg claims that the explosive growth of artificial intelligence is putting an unprecedented strain on the U.S. power grid, and it’s not just about keeping the lights on. A new analysis by Bloomberg, using data from Whisker Labs and DC Byte, shows that the mushrooming of data centers to support AI is distorting the quality of electricity delivered to millions of homes across the country, especially in areas like Chicago and Northern Virginia’s “data center alley.”

The problem, known as “bad harmonics,” occurs when the normal flow of electricity in steady waves is disrupted, leading to erratic spikes and dips in voltage. Whisker Labs, which tracks power quality using roughly 1 million residential sensors, found that more than three-quarters of the worst-affected homes are within 50 miles of significant data center activity.
Sustained exposure to distorted power can cause home electronics to overheat, make motors in appliances like refrigerators and air conditioners to rattle, and over time, lead to billions in damages. But experts warn bad harmonics are just the tip of the iceberg, foreshadowing deeper problems engulfing the nation’s power infrastructure.

“Harmonics are a pretty good canary in the coal mine for early signs of stress and problems,” said Bob Marshall, CEO of Whisker Labs. Left unaddressed, power quality issues can snowball, causing voltage surges that spark fires or sudden sags that trigger blackouts.
The core of the crisis lies in the insatiable appetite of data centers, which can suck up 10,000 times more electricity than a single household. The U.S., which operates the most data centers globally, is projected to see a 16 percent surge in power demand over the next five years, triple last year’s estimate, largely driven by new data centers.
This is straining a grid already burdened by aging infrastructure, extreme weather, and the electrification of transportation and heating. Yet for decades, grid investment has lagged as electricity use remained largely flat — until now.
The fallout is apparent in Chicago, where over a third of sensors showed consistently high harmonic distortions, and in Northern Virginia, the global data center capital, where distortions exceeded acceptable industry limits in areas with facilities coming online or expanding.

While urban centers bear the brunt, the data center effect spans rural America too. Regardless of population density, Bloomberg’s analysis found sensors closer to data centers consistently picked up more distorted power than those farther away.
Experts say several culprits can be behind bad harmonics, from industrial machinery to renewable energy inverters. But the strong correlation between data center proximity and power quality erosion points to their outsized role.
Some remedies, like dedicated substations and power filtering equipment, are being deployed. But a key hurdle remains the lack of granular, house-by-house power quality monitoring by most utilities, due to prohibitive costs. Consequently, distortions ravaging home appliances often go unnoticed until they escalate.

“Embedded in your contract with your utility is the right to receive a certain quality of power,” said Hasala Dharmawardena of North American Electric Reliability Corp., which is studying data centers’ grid impacts. “We need to make sure we measure it, and that our consumers get the power quality that they deserve.”

Trimming Brass. how far to trim?

I have been working on Lad Dev for my 6.5CM.
Figured the CM was the easy button as some say to get my process down correctly so I know what I am doing for other rifles.
Right now I have some loaded up to find my charge weight. Then plan to tweak seating depths.

My question is on trimming the brass to length.
I have about 15 cases roughly that are at 1.922 in length. Max case length by my book shows to be 1.920.
Bought a trimmer as it was one piece of gear I did not have yet.
My question is how far back to trim?
In looking it looks like Min case length is 1.910 Max is 1.920.
Should I just split the difference and go to 1.915?

Its not great brass (Hornaday) but its all I have right now for my CM.
I also do not anneal if that makes a difference.
At least I dont yet.

How does it shoot…Speer Gold Dot 308Win 168g

I’m curious to know how Speer Gold Dot 308Win 168g groups out of bolt actions. I’m currently enjoying 168SMK FGMM and the groups are all sub 1” @ and 100.

My goal is to find some bonded boolets that shoot well from the factory.

Does stock torsional stiffness matter?

So I was curious on people's thoughts about stock torsional stiffness and accuracy/repeatability?

For example, say you have your rifle on a bipod, and you exert a lateral or rotational force against the stock (say pushing against the cheek piece) if the forearm/stock deflects is that bad, or does it even matter? Seems like it might be a bigger issue (if it's even an issue) on a bipod than bags, as the rifle is allowed to twist on a bag that probably minimizes the torsion force but a locked down bipod isn't going to allow the mount point to move, so the stock twists.

One thing I've noticed is many stocks/chassis are pretty stiff vertically when you try and press the forearm to the barrel, which is the common test everyone seems to try, but some will twist quite easily, especially in stocks that do not have a full aluminum spine and just use a bedding block etc. I noticed this recently when I was setting up a new MDT Field Stock. It's quite stiff vertically when you try and compress it toward the barrel, but put it in a bipod and put just a couple pounds of pressure to either side of the cheek rest and was shocked how much twist there was. Obviously it's an extreme budget priced option, sacrifices have to be made at the price point, and it does not have a full aluminum spine. So for giggles I put a few other stocks/chassis I had into a bipod and the variation was pretty huge. Not surprising the higher price/weight/mass was usually more resistant to this force, but not always. I'd imagine a lot of factory plastic stocks would do horribly in this test as well.

AI AT: not surprisingly rock solid
TRG: again the only movement I could feel/see was bipod "slop"
CZ 457 bedded in a factory varmint precision chassis: I was surprised how much twist this one had, but it's also not very stiff vertically
10/22 in a bravo: I'd say middle of the pack
r700 in MDT field stock: by far the most flex, not even close
r700 bedded in HSS precision stock: pretty stiff, almost no movement
Sako s20: pretty solid middle of the pack.

Video Link

For my use, the low price of the MDT Field stock was not the main motivating factor, I wanted something under 4lbs, that had a "skin" not bare metal, was setup for detachable mags, had a vertical grip, and was not super bulky, but the amount of flex in the forearm seems concerning.

Vector X rangefinder mapping capability

The Vector X bino/rangefinder has an app from Vectronix: VECSS. Oddly the Google Play store said it wasn't compatible with my Android phone or tablet, although it only requires Android version 9. I was able to download the app as an APK file and sideload it onto both devices. The device is remarkably capable and sophisticated, although as engineers are wont to do, the documentation does not begin to explain or explore these capabilities. The device has an internal compass and displays the target azimuth. Happily, in the Settings you can adjust for your magnetic declination (not mentioned in the PDF manual). The app makes it easier to set up and utilize rifle/ammo profiles but also has a mapping capability.

The mapping capability is remarkable, although I haven't quite figured out what I'll use this for! I paired the Vector X with a Lenovo tablet that I use for shooting apps (bigger screen and easier to read in the field without my #*&^$ reading glasses). You open the VECSS app, pair the Vector X with the device, and open Mapping. The app reads the rangefinding info, likely uses its internal GPS chip to find your location, then shows the location of your ranged target using the distance and compass azimuth.

Although my location should require 12.9 East, I had to fiddle with this a bit. There is a water storage tank for my neighborhood about 1200 yards distant. I set up the Vector X on a tripod and ranged this several times and found that using 7.3 East put me on the center of the tank. Maybe the magnetic pole is wandering, might be some metallic interference from the tripod, who knows? The Vector X displays a "chicken" in the display when it wants the internal compass recalibrated, and that seems to happen fairly often. Not important unless you need the azimuth for something like this.

The VECSS app works like most smartphone apps, so you can zoom in and out on the display and also rotate it to fit your shooting location and the target into a landscape display. You can do this with multiple different targets and it will mark each on the map display and show the ranging information in the table below. Being an old guy who grew up with paper maps, this is amazing technology.
