I don’t know the specific figures, but most of the lignite mines in Texas are closing. Our shipments from the PRB to Texas aren’t nearly what they were. Definitely something to research. The retirement of the coal fleet is what is spurring all the power shortages.

So if in the cool of the year your panel is making 350 watts at 70* F..... when that panel is 150* F because it's hot on the roof - it's only going to be making 280 watts. Now take all of the solar panels that are installed - add the heat of the summer when they need the power most - and it's all running at 80% efficiency?

Last, but most significant, is thermal coefficient. This is listed on a solar panel datasheet as a loss of efficiency for every one degree Celsius increase in temperature. For example, if your panel lists -0.5%/°C, it will lose 0.5% efficiency when it gets one degree C hotter.By definition, this varies according to the temperature, so your derating factor will be different in the summer than in winter. Not sure what to use? Taking 20% off the nameplate rating of the panel would be a reasonable estimate. That is, if you have a 350 watt panel, you can assume that it will generate a maximum of 280 watts in the real world.

I passed by our local National Guard armory today. It is summer drill time for this unit, and the place is normally packed with cars while they are gone training. When I say packed, I mean overflowing into the surrounding field. The parking lot isn’t even close to full. I am guessing there are several who refused the vax and it has impacted the numbers pretty hard at this unit. I don’t know if it is this bad across the country, but if it is the supposed 60,000 number they are throwing out isn’t close.
