Turning Savage 112 338LM to 33XC

Not sure but I'm interested in doing that as well. I have the Ruger Precision in 338LM and my friend has the Savage 112 338LM. We are both interested in stepping them up to 33XC.

The only thing Im not liking is the action diameter, I'd like to put a heavier barrel on but I'm limited, a barrel larger diameter than the the action wouldn't look very nice, I'm also going to go to a shouldered barrel and get away from the barrel nut.

32” 1.2” with barrel nut. Next barrel will be shouldered.
Was having pressure issues with mine but believe it’s due to my barrel being a bit tight for the flatlines.
Ordering a new barrel so I can shoot the 400gr flatlines.

My action is 112
1.350”

Awesome, thanks for the feedback, my plan is to do a 34" for my 33xc and shoot 285 Badland solids.

I tried the 33xc never could get past pressure issues. If i had to do it over i would go 37xc a lot less problems and is a very accurate. the 33xc never lived up to what i wanted.

The reason I'm building a 33xc is I'm trying to be in the light division of ELR at Spearpoint Ranch, I thought about ordering 2 barrels doing one in 33 and the other in 37 since I use the same dies. Just have to buy two barrels and two reamers lol. Dang expensive hobbies haha

In your opinion what would you suggest as the best 338 to rebarrel a Lapua to. I already have a 375 BAS so wouldn't be looking at the 37XC.

What problems were you experiencing with 33xc? I have one spun up, but not fired yet. Thanks

I had VERY bad pressure issues. I was never able to load the case powder wise anywhere near what i need to get the velocity. As example i could not go over 108 grains og H 50 or 104 grains of Retumbo without piercing the primers. My avg fps was only 40 fps faster the m my .338 LM. It could have been the barrel as i sent it back to Dave Tooley and he said a lotof wear for about 200 rounds. The wear is what he would of expected to see in a barrel with many more rounds. I think it was just bad steel and that can happen to any barrel manufacturer.

If you looking to rebarrel .388lm that is a hard question. I just kept the .338lm and got a 375ct for ELR.

I saw the same pressure issues with retumbo as Phil did. N570 is way better and H50BMG I'm finding even better accuracy without pressure but velocity is down a little. N 570 has velocity without the pressure, but the accuracy node is smaller than the H50.

Hope that helps.

Have you looked into getting your bolt bushes? That’s typically the problem with pierced primers, I had the same issue (different caliber) couldn’t get over 2750 FPS without piercing a primer. I got a new bushes bolt, and bam 3050 FPS no prime issues. Man did pierced primers drive me nuts...

Yes it’s a larger diameter and fits more powder. Easily holds 150gr of H50bmg. I’m currently only running 139.7 though

It was designed to meet elrso rules for light class and still have all the horsepower to push any 338 gullet out there to really good speed. I shot it a couple months ago at Spearpoint. Didn’t have the best outing but was having problems with pierced primers and tough extraction. Both problems were caused by the cheap savage action. 285 badlands at 3342fps

That 338 Carnie was definitely a screamer. I look forward to seeing how it performs now that you have it bushed. I’m currently looking a starting a 37XC build in the next year or so. I just cannot seem to stop buying/building firearms. It’s really a bad habit. Haha

It’s better than drugs lol with less side effects. Idk if it’s cheaper though 😂

We can do a 375 Carnie on your current action😉

Haha. I highly doubt my Remington 700 action would be up to that challenge.

Maybe you just got a bad action or barrel. The b33XC Dominates the ELR Light Rifle Class by at least 10 to 1.

So what did you do?Are you shooting at the Spearpoint Finale next week?

My suggestion is stay away from the Savage even for the Lapua and the full cylinder like the Xc is even worse the cartridge is way too big for that small of Tenon. But if you opt to use a 700 footprint or the 112 Savage size action at least shoulder the shank to the action and don't use a nut. I would do if I was stuck on using the 112 action do a 1.300 diameter Shank at least 6 in Long this will help greatly to getting a little bit more performance without going to a larger aftermarket action the action OD and the Tenon ID are the two major things that you should be concerned about

Before I go and order my barrel and dies and such I was wanting feedback from others that have done this. I remember seeing pictures of this done, but can no longer find the thread.

Thanks
Im about to build one..But cant decide which route.. Either 112 because of bigger action or the route my friend and shooting partner Rodeohas .His 33XC is built off of a Savage Elite 110. I will say this. He won a match in ELR at Spearpoint Ranch,KS in the Light guns and against Heavy guns..And the next match he came in 2nd. His is built with a Shouldered Barrel and not the Savage nut.
My thinking is purely money wise..The 112 Target comes in a Wooden stock. The 110 Elite in a aluminum MDT Chassis which is what I already shoot in my 300 PRC.. and I absolutely love it.So if I buy the 112 I have to spend another 1500 to get the stock. And the 110 338 LM come with it. So my buddy is winning with his so if someone has negatives I just say his works great.

Im headed back to the Finale on the 17th & 18th of this month. Any of yall going?? Ron had shoulder surgery last week so he will miss this Finale at Spearpoint

It only shows him shooting the August match and he got 85% of the winners points…

We were there the last 2 matches. He won the July match.Beat heavy guns too.Call Steve Wirth. at Spearpoint. Its easy to verify. I have the results on my phone.I will find them.

Going to the same match shooting at the same targets at the same distance match after match does not make you a great contender. Nor does using a less desirable platform. Credit where credit is due congratulations on the win but his chosen platform does leave a lot to be desired to be optimized and safe. Will it work yes but it is nowhere near the 1st and best choice but I understand that sometimes money is a factor

And he beat the heavy guns by about 40k or 50k points.

I've only shot at 4 matches. So I'm pretty new.But I have not shot at the same targets ir the same distance at any other the 4.
So which matches do you shoot at where they are always different? I'd like to go myself.Im retired and can go anytime.Im trying to go to France and South Africa.

That was one of the requirements to be ko2m compliant for the longest time spearpoint was not moving their targets in my understanding is once they did start moving the targets they only moved them just a few feet basically not much change at all. None of that really matters he did a good job and won the match the question is will we see this consistently from this individual if the platform and the person is competitive for hops we will see this again
