The California fire departments who were fighting the forest fires last year, did a study to determine what face masks their employees could use while fighting fires. They determined that there is no face mask that will completely block out smoke particles to safe levels.
Here's the rub. Smoke is .5 to .7 micrometers, and the coronavirus is .1 to .5 micrometers.
Face mask like the N95 were not designed to filter particles that small. At best they would capture large liquid droplets from sneezes and coughs. More of a "going out" rather than "coming in" effect.
