Maggie’s Man's Best Friend Thread

Nothing really wrong with a "Puppy mill" if you do all your research and they have the papers on the parents that you can check out and check the history of and they are willing to give you all the full papers without being dicks about things

Your best bet is a smaller breeder that is doing it from their house / property and isn't into taking them to shows.

Still expect to pay probably up to $2k for the puppy.

The big snotty breeders are always trying to trash talk the "puppy mills" because they don't want cheap reasonable competition that doesn't try to screw the customer over.

Here's how I put it to one of those breeders:

So you want me to buy a sports car and pay you full price for it.
But you want to keep your name on the title
And you want to borrow it anytime you want to take your girlfriend out for date night
And you want to take it anytime to go to show it off at car shows
And you want to tell me where and when I can drive it and what I can do with it and who I can drive around in it
But I of course get to pay for all the gas, tyres, maintenance, insurance, parking and transporting?

How about you just keep it and pay all bills and have a good life.
What you described is a lease.

My daughter has an upcoming senior art show in college. The piece on the invite is titled...

"I bet this made my parents cry" (my dead dog)
It did.

It's her artist eye version of Chloe (we lost Chloe, last winter) at rainbow bridge.
Chloe was a Christmas present when our daughter was a child.

I don’t celebrate Christmas but my ex does, she goes over the top! She and my daughter have me over all the time (including Christmas, and Thanksgiving), so this year I made her a little something for her tree using my laser.

We had many dogs over the years but these are the two she has currently. I used little paws instead of snowflakes or similar, so she can hang them somewhere year-round if she likes.

Don't know how busy you are, but that could be a cool side business. Is that red oak?

Walnut.

Heck no - each one took about a day's work, nobody could pay what my time is worth.
I know nothing of the mechanics of this, but some questions;

1. I understand that the graphics are engraved by the laser. But, are the "cutouts" done by the laser as well ?

2. What is the material (Walnut) thickness ?

3. Are the images of the dogs from actual photos of "Darla" and "Tyson" ? If so, I assume they were converted from photos to some form of "rasterization" and up/downloaded to the laser.

4. What kind of program do you use and how much time does it take to create the "Laser ready" graphics ?

TIA, I'm curious  :)

1. Yes, all cut and engraved on the laser
2. 1/8" walnut-veneer plywood especially made for laser cutting
3. No, I spent a lot of time looking for images that matched them almost perfectly, then worked with those in:
4. Gimp and Inkscape to produce suitable line art that engraved well, and as stated, I spent two days on them.

This is what I woke up to a few mornings ago. GSP, Jindo*, Collie, and a chuwiener...the GSP knows how to open the door, and brought the others with him.

*Korean dog my girls brought back the last year when they went to visit family...not supposed to take them out of country, they are some kind of a "national treasure".

Lost this one a week after Thanksgiving. Female blue nosed Pit. Layla was just a pup, having just turned 3. Heart issues from breeding I guess. Gentlest of all the dogs I’ve had, loved everyone and everything, including all other dogs.

I wept. This one left a mark. I thank God for the three years we had her. It just wasn’t enough.

I have a male and a female boykin spaniels. Everytime i walk in the door, the female( just over a year old) jumps all up and down just happy as hell to see me. The male is the wifes buddy.
I tell her down fairly sternly.
Doesnt matter if i am gone all day or 5 minutes the same thing every time. Wife sent me this the other day. Had to rethink my whole existence just a bit

I recently lost my beloved Zeus, red nose pittie, in September. Had him 4.5 years, most loyal and loving dog I have had!
I have 2 more, Hugo and Bandit. Enjoy

Sorry for your loss. Pitts get a bad rap, sure there are bad ones, but that's the fault of their people most of the time. The one we have is a sweetheart. I have no idea what she'd do to someone if they came in the house when nobody is home...probably wouldn't end well for the person...if she could even get to them before the GSP and Jindo did their business.

Yes they do get a bad rap. Zeus was 35kg of muscle, but very loyal and could track for hours. No one ever tried to break in or steal stuff when he was home. Used to tell him sit, stay, guard! And that's what he would do until we got home. Miss him everyday.

I dated a veterinarian for a bit..

A lot of/most people let the vet put their dog down and dont want to be in the room when it happens(which I understand, its the worst and really feels like they're taking a piece of you with them).
But dont do this. This is when they need you most and are the most scared.

Thankfully all dogs go to heaven.. but at least be there to hold their paw and walk em through it if you aint gone do the deed yourself...
Would you want your family to leave you in a room with a stranger for your final moments in this realm?

I have always had mine in my lap. I wouldn't have it any other way. It's very hard, but I don't want their last moments to be anywhere but my lap.

This is Tucker our first Dane we adopted at 18 months old.

This picture was taken 20 hours before we had to put him down due to congestive heart failure at young 6 years 2 months old. I took him to the best veterinary cardio unit in the state but the cards weren't in his favor.

Tucker and his older brother Rev were a squirrel and racoon hunting team 365 days of the year.

The vacancy he left within our household was immense and as luck would have it we came across another Dane that was up for adoption 30 days later. Duke has turned out to be a very special companion and convinced me that I'll never be without a Great Dane as long as I'm physically able.

He's also an exceptional squirreler.

One thing is certain...…. I've never met a bad dog, only dogs that have been screwed up by abusive POS humans.
I’ve had great Danes for over 35 years. There is no other dog for me.!

After my boy Hades passed in his sleep 6 months ago, I guess I've been moping around more than I thought I was.

Unbeknownst to me--but knownst to everyone else in the family--my incredible woman set me up on a play date with this little guy yesterday.

'Hide, meet Soldier. Soldier, these are the hooligans I was telling you about.

@Yasherka ..
You mentioned your struggle battling some PTSD demons..
Have you thought about a service/therapy dog?

Not gonna pretend to know what you're going through. Always wanted to be a Ranger but unfortunately I was a super risk-loving tard in my younger years, in and outta jail cells all the time as a younger man so they wouldnt let me in after seeing my record(but they'll let tranny freaks/degenerates in the service and people who HATE our country  however thats another discussion).
Ive seen service dogs work wonders for guys(ex-convicts) battling their own demons.. and seem to be a miracle cure for many of our veterans...

Just before and since I had my heart attack, my pup has stuck by my side. Considering she's a Momma dog, I find this remarkable. It amazes me how they tend to know what you're feeling.

So, what I'm saying is that anyone who is having ANY type of problem in their life, a dog is a key for therapy in my opinion. Just having your dog jump up next to you and lays so you can pet it, is therapeutic like you've never felt.

Dogs are God's messengers that we are all loved.

Nikita tried to wake me last night to let her out but I was too beat. This AM I found a pile of shit in the floor...right next to the toilet.
