There's also many manufacturers, charging algorithms, and failure points.

Generally they fail because of abuse. Sometimes it's during charging.

I would be far more uneasy about being in a room full of various lithium-ion and li-po batteries, than in a room full of sealed and properly stored containers of black powder. It has been a while since laptop batteries were spontaneously combusting on a regular basis. A lot of those were supposed to have been caused by impurity levels that eventually caused internal shorts, didn't need physical damage.
