This one never gets old. TopGun should have paid tribute to this story during the Mach 9 scene. Maverick should have muttered "This one's for you, Sled Driver." and keyed the mic for an LA speed check. He wouldn't have even needed to do it at Mach 9, he just needed to do it above Mach 4.
I'm still waiting for someone to edit that scene into their YouTube version of the movie.

Over the weekend, the city of pensacola bought these at a "Buyback" event. Once he demonstrated that they were functional, they paid him $200 a piece. And because of the "no questions asked" they couldn't charge him with illegally manufacturing to resale. As you can see, they weren't amused
