One of the big reasons they do 1000ft now is (according to Clay Millican) that the cars are going so fast now (regularly 335 mph+ @1000ft) that they would be going so fast at 1/4 mile that the tires can't take it.
I was under the impression it was because they were getting too fast for the runout at the end of the track and many established tracks couldn't increase the length of the runout, so the solution was to shorten the 'race' portion. This solved the problem two ways. 1. they couldn't get to the higher speeds. 2. they had more runout room.

I don't think we'll ever see the 86 again it's too expensive to manufacture.

Like the model 99 lever gun.
Best lever ever made but too expensive to produce.

Same with a model 37 pump shotgun and endless countless others we can think of.

No longer viable due to the cost of production.

To the best of my knowledge.
Those are not a true model 37 Ithaca.
No steel receiver, no removable barrel and they're not even made by Ithaca.
Those are made by a company called Ithaca Gun Company and not the same.
Academy Sports used to be a distributor.
