Good guys win one

I think it hilarious. Stupid mother stole the goat and said she would deal with the consequences later. Hahahahahaha. She fully expected the fair to roll over and say no big deal. When the consequences were not what she expected she got a liberal lawyer to defend her poor family because their feelings are hurt. Lol.

Most county fairs are terminal for market animals. Part of the agreement that kids sign. Least thats been my experience both as a kid doing it and having my own kids do it.
Exactly. It is all in the contract. If you don't have the stomach to give them their meat goat at market time, don't raise a Boer. Get a dairy goat or something.

Is it really the best idea to have 9 year old little girls take care of goats for months and then to slaughter the goats???? I mean???
It's a 4H thing, been going on for at least 100 years.
The kid and parent were well aware, no way they could not have been.

The entire situation is the parents fault, not the cops, not the kids.
The mother could have bought the kid another goat......or not had the kid in the 4H program to begin with (duh!).

Are you imagining they are ritualistically killing these animals in front of children or something?

The kids get to help raise the animal for a few months and then sell them at auction where the animals are usually bought at auction by local companies for huge sums and the money goes to 4H, charities, etc.

Probably some bleeding heart californian saw someone's instagram and decided they wanted to be a chic, homesteader then got cold feet when the circle of life came calling.

And the mother should be charged for every penny of taxpayer money that had to be spent to enforce the law that she willingly and knowingly broke. Will be a good life lesson for mother and child.

Been doing this stuff a long time. Load out morning is usually a tear fest for the younger ones....and a few of the older ones.
Life lessons start early. That said, a parent should know if there kid can handle it.
As far as I'm concerned no other youth activity turns out finer humans. 4h/FFA kids work hard and understand the value of a dollar.

I know the situation very well.
I *try* to buy 4H steers at the local auction when I can.
Sure it might cost a tad more than at the local cattlemans auction, but the beef is way better from the kids cattle.
I do try to distance myself from the kids if called for, hug the kid when called for, and buy the kid a new pet if needed.
The local kids around here though, they are not idiot Californians and they know whats up.....and for some reason the kids parents don't try to steal the animal back after the sale.
Go figger.

No, I read the story and I get the idea. I also think a 9 year old little girl has no business caring for an animal for months only for it to be slaughtered. It's extremely predictable that she would be very upset at the idea of slaughtering an animal she took care of for months, because she's a 9 year old little girl. It's just a horrible idea. A 12 year old or older boy is a different story.

Tell me you didn't grow up on a farm without telling me you didn't grow up on a farm

This wasn't feeding livestock every day and then getting up calves to take to the sale. This was a 9 year old girl taking care of a single little goat like a pet for months. It's not the same thing, and I didn't say it was some horrible idea in general, but it's a horrible idea for that mother, and what I said was that it was VERY predictable for that girl to be very upset. Her mother is a dumbass and should have known exactly how it was going to go.

We don't eat goats either....

Life on the farm is where you learn about . . . life in the real world.

Somewhere around here I have a photo that was posted in the newspaper.

I am standing in front of a pig - hanging on a hook - in the slaughter house. I was about 10 years old.

The pig had already been butchered and was the Grand Champion at the county fair.

They don't publish photos like that in the newspaper anymore . . . and people think that meat comes from the grocery store.

Yeah, I get that and it's good for kids to understand that. It's also stupid for some random little girl to take care of a goat for months and then expect her to just be fine with it being slaughtered.

Few years back there was an article in one of the national newspapers over here that a kindergarten class (5 year olds approx) up by the arctic circle was taken to a raindeer slaughter. Got to see everything except the actual dispatching of the animals.

Was a normal thing up there, important to teach them where meat comes from.

Kids were fascinated, some parents were horrified.

life lessons. not ready for it? then do NOT fucking participate.
4h/FFA kids work hard and understand the value of a dollar
and the value of life. you wont see these kids throwing their meat in the garbage at dinnertime. understanding that something that wanted to live, had to die in order for that meat to be there is a very important thing to comprehend.

EXACTLY MY POINT. Her mother should not have had her participate! It's very predictable and STUPID for some random girl to just effectively get a pet for months then expect her to go give it up to be slaughtered. The girls mother should have known her own daughter and how this was going to go. Incredibly dumb, then mom doubled and tripled down on stupid

The best thing for the parent to do was to get another goat and do it again.
My children at that age have bottle fed calves and taken care of them to the point of being a pet. Then when eating a steak or burger ask which one it is. Once while eating my daughter looked up and said "ol Red tastes pretty good". She had named him at birth. I kinda miss the naming of them. Now they are just numbers.

Perhaps.... but farm kids grow up in it, and it's one of many, and this was some random girl. I remember a buddies little brother crying over this very thing and I think he was older than 9 then. It's a normal reaction for a 9 year old girl who takes care of a single goat for months and it's a dumb idea to set it up that way with a predictable outcome . All moms fault

Then the parents should have bid on the goat.
At this point I am not sure using the word "parent" is applicable to these people

Welcom Norway. Just watched a series 'Vikings Valhalla'. Pretty good show, your ancestors were some rugged folks. My southern ass would have frozen in moments.

To your post.

Seems they robbed them of the most important part, the actual slaughter. It's brutal but real. Might turn some to vegetarians. And you/ we are bought into the lie that its all pretty, using 'dispatched', rather than 'killed'. They cut its throat and it bled all over the place just like the pitbul I shot last month. Nothing pretty about it.

Yeah, they should have. The whole thing is just crazy and every step is more crazy than the last . I blame mom. She knew what the deal was and yet still chose for her 9 yr old little girl to do it, then broke the rules. It does seem kind of nuts for cops to go 500 miles to get some stinky goat. (Anyone who had had goats know they only do 2 things all day and night).

Eat and shit.

Problem is they are so fucking cute when they're kids but they grow up to be goats.

Damn, a reasonable solution. who woulda thunk it. Just buy the goat. Maybe the kids peace of mind wasn't worth what the goat sold for to the parents?
Goats ain't worth much. Mom hired lawyers didn't she, or did some lib lawyer take it for free? How much could the goat be?

A while back someone ditched a goat in my pasture. I spent some time asking around for the owner. Left a sign at the local store and I figured in a small community the owner would show up. That didn't happen. It took up with a few of the young calves and had a good life for a while. I came home one evening and it had a broken leg. Cute little shit but I am not a goat farmer.

Goats are a hassel and I don't eat goats so milk is the only use I have for em other than keeping things cleared, which they do pretty well. Ours would get up with the dogs and I think they thought they were dogs too. When the dogs would coming running up, you'd heat the goats behind them running up to the truck like the dogs had, but further behind.

Correct. They like to get up on cars and trucks too, which results in their untimely death
My buddy just pulled in the drive in hs brand new Toyota pick up and we went it to have a beer. Came out and the goat was standing on the hodd, scratched it all up. Mu buddy is a big guy who worked out, hit it in the head with his fist so hard it did a back flip. Goat gets up, looks at him like "Whatcha do that for?" and jumps back on the truck. That was the last act of its life.

I have seen a goat do just like that more than once. I don't particularly like goats.

I've had a couple goats before and hate them. Ornery cockeyed smelly bastards. My idiot ex would let the baby ones in the house.

It was $900. It was theft of property. And it was the property of a public official.
Read the link

Who said that he didn't give a shit and they could buy the goat back if they wanted to. In this day of lawsuits and Internet viral stories you'd think they would have called a mulligan and let the kid have the goat back.

And copulate - very loudly.

Our family always barbecued a goat for Independence Day. I'm not sure how that tradition got started but that's the only time we ever ate goat.

They do make good cheese. Other than that I have no use for them. I hear pigs can keep an area (like kudzu) just as clean and are far tastier

$900 for a damn goat?

If it happened in California, the cops wouldn't have bothered. Isn't that the magic number for getting away with theft there, $900?
