I believe the "in the butt" thing happened more than once on the show. (so it couldn't have been an innocent mistake, at least not the second time.) My favorite part of that story is the cunts at SNOPES had it on their website for years that it was false and didn't happen.

what happens if they are found in the USA? Can you register them, since they were built before 1980??

These are probably Lend Lease guns so that is an issue. LL guns, as I understand, can't be brought back to the US. But CMP brought back all those M1 Garand's from S Korea a few years ago. Not sure how they were classified. I thought congress made some provision for them to be imported.
Then there is "no new MG's" after 1986, so they can't be brought back whole. Had to be in the US and on the registry.
Then, you can't import the barrels in a parts kit unless cut up (along with the receiver).

But, several years ago, maybe 10+/-, a bunch of new 1928 Thompsons were found in Russia, kinda the same way. They were brought back as parts kits with uncut barrels. The kits sold for around $1500-1800. Even the crates sold for big money. They even had WWII vintage 50 round drums in the crates.
There was a guy (Russian?) selling them at the Houston gun shows for almost a year before they were gone. Also sold in ShotGun News.
