All the chips at the stores in Colorado are puffy.

That’s fine, nothing to worry about

At the first shop I worked at we made a customer buy rear tires. He kept saying “No, I’m not replacing them yet” even though they looked worse than the pic above. Finally the service manager called and said “This is unsafe for us to even road test, these are being replaced”. And just like most people with a decent amount of money he only said “Ok, go ahead”. Sometimes rich people are annoying as shit

But anyway, thread rules

Had a Firestone dealer tell me that once because the tires were more than six years old. DOT, he said. Show me, I said.

That is just bananas to look at. I have just over 600 freefly jumps(head down/sit) and those speeds are in the 170-180 range for head down.....only visuals you get of speed is passing through cloud layers. This video is a whole new level of wow....that is freaky seeing buildings go by. Thanks for sharing have always enjoyed watching Isle of Mann TT....this is another level of nuts. Can't fathom the level of concentration. Had a Katana 600 for a couple of years which is a nothing burger in terms of these beasts, but was more than enough for me....these guys have huge nuts.

There is a great Honda documentary on the IOM TT. It has 2 parts.

Watched the Joey Dunlop documentary really amazing to hear about his upbringing, wrenching his own bike even when he made it to the big show. Thanks for the vids will check out later.

And it has like 30 miles of road, I had issues remembering Road America. Then you get the different tracks messed up in your head, what kind of turn was coming up. It really is crazy.

its not necessarily DOT.

Lots of "classic cars" get spun out, dented or wrecked due to old tires. It killed Paul Walker.

A SIL inherited a 2015 Mustang GT350 that was nearly impossible to drive in wet weather due to the age of the tires. It was scary to drive.

Well...the salesguy said it was DOT. I managed a heavy equipment/truck shop for years and we sold tires. No DOT age restriction for OTR or passenger vehicles. Tread depth and visual inspection.

The vehicle in question was the wife's 4Runner. Took it to another shop and had the tire repaired. Gave it to her girlfriend when she updated and the girlfriend drove it another two years before swapping tires.

RE: Walker. It's possible the tires caused him to lose control. Twice the posted speed limit killed him.

I thought it was the corner, or was it the tree, or the light post, or the fire?

“For an unknown reason, the driver lost control of the vehicle and the vehicle partially spun around and began to travel in a south-easterly direction.” The coroner report stated, “The vehicle then struck a sidewalk and the driver’s side struck a tree and then a light post. The force of these collisions caused the vehicle to spin 180 degrees and it continued to travel in an easterly direction. The passenger side of the vehicle then struck a tree and it then burst into flames.”

A bunch of car companies saying it STILL doesn't make it a Department of Transportation law or regulation. Also, I was in my local Discount Tire getting a tire patched a few weeks back, and their sign said 8 years. So it's not even a consistent message in the tire/car industry.
(I specifically paid attention to tire age, because I knew how old my tires are, and don't have money to replace them right now.)
