William Buck Memorial Postal Matches

I see right now...we're gonna have to put some restrictions on you!!! LOL!!!

Fine shooting Sir!!! (y)
Thanks BowChamp! I am shooting indoors now that we have a local indoor ARA sanctioned range about 1.5 hrs from me, so it's afforded the opportunity to shoot the postal targets indoors. I separated indoor scores for these two matches as I know most folks will be shooting outdoors and dealing with wind hold off. Very fortunate to be able to drive so little to shoot indoor matches here in Wisconsin!

Looks like you did pretty well in the ARA match at Lakeside.

Randy, I did better than my first series of three matches at Lakeside in December. I was fiddling around trying to improve my indoor shooting (these were the first series of matches indoors for me, other than shooting Nationals, and represent the totality of my indoor experience), adjusting the scope, tuner, etc., until the 3rd card on my last match there in Dec. I agg'ed over 2300 for the last 4 cards, when I stopped fiddling and just shot what I had. I swore not to fiddle anymore on match day, and to focus on just shooting well with whatever holdoff was needed to get in the ring. It worked out pretty well, but I still have room for improvement, so my focus is making adjustments to fine tune my tune, to reduce the vertical movement as much as I can with the lot of ammo I have. After the December matches, I then focused on the CT in January. Now, a couple guys and I have a few practice sessions to test some additional things before the next match late Feb. I'll definitely be ready for Feb match!

The two targets I posted for the WBMPM series came after some testing of a new setup, and I am still seeing some vertical movements in my strings of shots. Additional testing is still needed to see if I can get a better tune...

13F this morning while I'm getting ready for church. I know that's not much for Wisconsin shooters but I won't be shooting until the artic front departs Texas. I have my Elk Hunting parka, insulated gloves, and insulated camo hunting shirt so I don't expect to be cold. In my old age I dislike being out in cold as well as the heat in the Texas summers.

On the shooting side the new to me Sinclair front rest arrived, is assembled and awaiting it's chance to prove that it's not the equipment, it's the shooter.

I am almost embarrassed to send in this factory target, but I do not know what to blame except myself. Especially since I shot this indoors as the outside temp was -5 F. Good temperature indoors, but lots of large caliber guns going off on both sides and lighting is not as bright as it should be for my old eyes. I think I would rather have a few mosquitoes and some wind, but Minnesota is not kind to outdoor shooting in January. I printed off some of your original factory targets on card stock so hope that is OK. 170/200. Greyknife/Ralph

Greyknife, I have your score posted. This target is not so bad. I understand completely what you mean about having "boomers" on either side of you. I always try to get the bench near the wall, so they can't be on both sides of me. Then, I try to time my shot after they shoot and the vibrations die down a bit before they shoot again. It's challenging shooting indoors. Plus, you get the spookiness of the barrel mirage. That might be some of the issue as well. It sounds silly, but sometimes, I will blow down the scope end, and the mirage clears up temporary, so I can make the shot with a clear scope. The heat from the barrel does have an impact on your sight picture!

Thanks for submitting!

Larry

Looks like you might have picked up 5 more points by plugging the holes on the upper bull furtherest to the the RHS. Are the benches at your indoor range solid or do they move under vibration. Your score isn't at all bad for adverse conditions - about what I shot in the cool and wind here in north Texas.

When I was much younger and lived in Dallas I used to shoot, mostly 22's, at the outdoor range in the Trinity River bottoms. Despite normally having many more benches than shooters, someone with a big bore pistol would inevitably set up right next to me. In my gun bag I carried a 45-70 T/C Contender with 12" barrel and muzzle tamer in which I shot a fast powder reload. The muzzle blast and flash were quite noticeable. Usually, about 3 rounds were all that it took to get the gun with the 44 magnum to move over and give me a little rooms I could shoot my 22 pistol in peace.

Randy

To all - I have attached the revised rules, and the new targets for 2024:
- Factory Rifle
- Unlimited
- 10-Shot

Please look them over, let me know if you have any questions, and get ready to start shooting them in January!

Thanks!

Hello, I hope this query is allowed, if not please remove.
I just came across this forum and joined. Want to see whether I can participate in some postal matches. I looked at the rules, abut did not find an answer (hope I did not miss it).
- I only have access to indoor range - is this permitted?
- I saw factory class allows change of stock. Is the $ limit with a new stock still $1250?
- Is it safe to assume that I can bench the rifle, front rest and rear bag?
- Scopes are permitted for all shooting classes, correct?
- Above I see 3 targets, there are more items related to course of fire, are these obsolete, ot i can find additional targets elsewhere - eg Mini Palma, J Bell 6x5
Thanks

Tony, thanks for joining in on the fun.

- Yes, you can shoot indoors. I try to keep the indoor results separate from the outdoor results, in the scoring summary on at the first post on this thread on page 1.
- The $1250 limit is intended to keep rifles like those listed under Match Rifles, out of our Factory Rifle matches. Over $1250 inherently has an accuracy advantage over some of the Factory rifles. We allow stock changes as in most cases, a different stock will not create an accuracy advantage. So, use your best judgement when it comes to changing stocks in Factory class, and realize we're trying to keep things on equal ground in each class.
- Yes, for Factory, you can shoot off a front rest and bag in the rear.
- For all but one. The Iron Sight match only allows iron sights.
- Go to post #1 on page 1, scroll down to the attachments and you'll find the rules and all match targets needed. I've attached a screen print so you know what to look for.

Thanks again for joining in. Let me know if you have any other questions?

Larry

Nice shooting Sir!!

I braved the outdoors today as it was 30-32 degrees outside with relatively low wind. No other souls were at the range so I did not need to worry about the big boomers around me like when indoors. I feel much better about this target even though I am still not at the top of the list of the other competitors. I am also very happy with the 5 shot group of SK STD + in the upper right sighter. Think I may have lucked out with a good lot of ammo. Greyknife/Ralph

Looks like pretty good shooting to me. I shoot a lot of SK+ and it does vary somewhat from lot to lot and what shoot poorly in one rifle may shoot well in a different rifle.

Those of use who shoot outdoors kinda have to suffer during the winter months. Half your shots touched the X dot so I'd take this score as encouraging. For me it's not always having the top score but the journey to get better. Randy

Randy, thanks for your comments. I too enjoy the journey to get better, but at age 86 I may be running out of journey! When I buy ammo these days I only buy 2 or 3 bricks of 22LR in the mid price range for what I call my fun shooting. I think this 2 brick lot of SK STD plus may be fairly decent. When I shot in the ARA unlimited for about 10 years I would buy some ammo in the $15 to occasionally $20 price. Due to age and some health factors I sold my 40X Remington and retired from ARA 2 years ago. I do have good memories of those unlimited matches and some victories too. Now I am left with this Savage Mark II BTV which may shoot probably better in the factory class than I can shoot. Whenever I come home from shooting I always think I could have done better. This is what drives me now and I love forums like this one. For all of you who read this please remember to shoot as much as you can when you are still young as it does not get easier when you get to my age.

Shooters, I have been looking at the new(ish) Eley X-Shot target and app. I've ordered some targets to shoot, to see how well the app works. Basically, it's an 11x17 target page, 25 bulls. You shoot it, then open the app on your iphone, take a picture of your target and the app scores it, and shows you a summary of your scoring.

See this link for a short video example of how it works.

After I get a chance to try it out, I'll update you on my thoughts. if it works well, we could incorporate that into our Postal Matches. You would need to purchase targets from Killough Shooting Sports ($20 for 25, $15 for shipping) and download the free app to your phone. Once you shoot and it scores your target, you can take a screen shot of that scoring summary, and post it here. I can then post the scores on the summary page of our thread, for folks to see.

Take a look and see what you think?

I'll update you in a couple of weeks after I get my targets and try out the system.

Stay tuned!

Larry

I'm interested to hear your thoughts. $40/25 targets is tough pill to swallow for me personally.

Randy
Point taken. They are pricey compared to the ARA target which can be had for $20/100, plus $15 to ship. I'm actually shooting an X-Shot 3 card fun match next weekend, so I'll have my thought afterwards...

Finally found a good time and weather to shoot some today before football...
67 degrees, no wind.
All shot with CZ 457 MTR with an Arken scope using SK Long Range Match ammo.

Thanks

Randy, I have your scores posted! Well done with your custom Anschutz...

Larry

The Anschutz and a custom Suhl 150 were my very first rimfire BR rifles. The Suhl is long gone but I still very rarely shoot the Anschutz 54. It has a custom barrel, poor BR wooden stock, and a trigger from a later Anschutz that doesn't match the action. Allegedly, it came from the estate of a shooter in the SE many years ago.

Thanks Randy. First time shooting the target. I found the red colors hard to see the dot. I basically tried to center my crosshairs in the red circle, holding off a bit and touched the trigger. It worked out ok. Best edge scoring was a big relief after shooting ARA targets with worst-edge scoring!

I had a chance to shoot this new target during practice and during a 3 card fun match. I found the target was harder for my eyes to see the bulls, so I used my cross-hairs and tried to put them on the circle around the dot, while holding off a bit. Seemed to work ok.

I really like the scoring app, that seemed to work very well. An existing ARA Match Director held the match, and used his phone to check the scores. The app is quick, and flags any bulls that have a questionable hit (low probability). In general, it's very good at the ring scores, but has some issues with the x-count from time to time. Not terrible, so you have to check your bulls closely, to make sure they are scored correctly.

I think I'll leave this match in our selection of matches, in case any of you would like to try it out. There is a cost to buy the targets, and the scoring is best-edge.

If you do try it, please take a screen shot of the app when you've checked the scores and the final tally for score and x-count is done. You can then send that in, instead of a picture of the target. Also, if you do send in a pic of the target, be sure to write your score at the bottom of the target, so I know what score to post.

If you give it a try, let me know what you think?

Any questions, please let me know?

Larry
