Heh when I lived in Reno doing grad work we did a lot of skiing/boarding and they would have chain/4wd/speed restrictions when the roads were really quite good. Now granted I grew up in ND so my idea of good winter roads is a bit skewed, but I remember of the tire/chain restricts folks telling me once that the only reason they did it 9 out of 10 times was to slow the CA drivers down cause prior to doing it 90% of the accidents and cars in the ditch were CA drivers.
I got that beat....when I moved to my current AO I'd been here maybe 2 or 3 weeks and we had a "lot of snow." yep, shore wuz...I had about 2" on my grill and 2" on the grass. At 7am the roads....WERE COMPLETELY DRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seriously, no H20 in any form. But....they closed down 3/4 of the city - FOR DRY ROADS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hence, here...a dusting of snow...people freak. Even this time, dry since Saturday around 10am, my neighbors across street stayed inside all weekend!!!
My AO had about an inch of slush under 8" of snow. Even the Ram diesel was having fits but road tires so... That corner you reference? Was that on the way to Fayetteville pre bypass. I remember a sharp left coming down the mountain with flashing yellow lights suggesting you re-think life decisions (I never did) and always wondered if a MFer tried and went off right there. Good times and I remember driving it in a snow storm.

But that, IIRC, the sign is at the top of the mountain going back down to the valley and is proceeded by a left hand turn (going towards 'Nam, confirming your analysis) but I think to the side was...well...ARMCO only and "air." Been way too long (30+ since I drove that). Next I go up there (maybe this year) I'm still taking 71.

I remember the days of clearing Blowout Mountain at the Scott County line and driving to Y City WAY to fast (Think a buck 35 ish in a BMW 525i with a 5-speed) but the area has grown up a lot in 35 years and the thought of a dog/kid/side by side/tractor popping out in the road has tempered my need for speed. Looking back...I was an absolute dumb fuck. But, fortunately, while the speeds seemed high then, today I'd not blink as I have MUCH MUCH better skills (and car). I knew it like the of my hand too. I drove 71 from Fort Smith to 270 to Hot Sprigns not long ago and yikes I was RUUUUSTTTTY!!

Yep. I read an interview with Woods about it he was very humbly grateful. It sounded like he was already close with his neighbor before all of this. I'm sure they're even closer now.
