People knew it was a sphere thousands of years before the Enlightenment, and establishing latitude by the sun was mathematical and scientific proof, but suddenly it became fashionable to claim it was flat, and this constituted the "scientific consensus" at that time. The truth was that the ruling monarchies largely did not want any new lands discovered because people might get ideas about not living under their boots, so they convinced the morons that the land they knew was all there was. Even Queen Isabella was convinced by a faster trade rout, not a new continent. Our "science" is as corrupted by politics as it was in the 1500's.
