I am currently shooting my Benelli SBE with mag extension...Is there any reason to change to something different? Only drawback is the 26 inch barrel...was kinda thinking about an M2 or Saiga, but them Saiga shotguns are so ugly. I can move pretty good with my SBE since I have shot a million shells thru it over the past 20 yrs duck hunting and guiding.

Re: Which shotgun for 3gun?

Id run the SBE, there is nothing wrong with them and you are familiar with it. My goto shotgun is a Beretta Pintail but there is no conceviable way to extend the mag tube or I would run it. I have been looking into the options out there and there are a ton of them. If you insist on picking up a new shotgun I would look at the M2's with comfortech stocks.

Re: Which shotgun for 3gun?

I shoot the Benelli M2 and a Benelli Nova when I have to shoot a pump at rocky mountain 3gun.

Re: Which shotgun for 3gun?

I shoot an FN, but if you already have a SBE I'd keep shooting it. 26" really is no handicap, one of the best 3 gunners I know shoots a 30" M1. I've shot it in a match when my shotgun died (not the FN), and didn't feel handicapped.

Re: Which shotgun for 3gun?

26in is longer then I prefer. I shoot an FN SLP, however the next great thing will be the Venci pimped.

Re: Which shotgun for 3gun?

We just started the swith over to the new Remington Versamax. Those things are the heat! Runs like an M2 but kicks like an FN. They also seem to cycle faster then the M2's.

they also are almost identical to a benelli so with a few small mods they take a M2 stock

Re: Which shotgun for 3gun?

Benelli M2 24 inch. I just took a class in the rain and mud. The SLP, 1100, and even the Benelli SuperNova choked. My M2 ran like a raped ape, and it's simple. Little stuff like the carrier release - one part and a spring. Compare that to an FN. I've run #6, #8, low recoil slugs, hi brass slugs, etc. Eats it all.

I would listen to Tyler. He knows his stuff. With that said I shoot a Benelli M1 super 90 and really like it. I have also heard great things about the Venci.

That blows my mind!
A 3.5 inch gun that cycles faster than the 3"?
Interesting!

How is the thumb damage factor?
I saw a Youtube vid that looked like they were feeding pairs of 2-3/4s at a time?

Thanks

Re: Which shotgun for 3gun?

not familiar with that shotgun, but if you can get a 22-24 inch choked barrel it might improve your situation.

I use a FN SLP MK I 22 inch 8+1. It freegin runs..
M2 works well too but costs more.

The M2 custom shop version is three gun ready, I would have the feed ramp welded so you don't end up chewing up your thumb feeding it shells.

The saiga will put you into open class and I am not sure you want that lol.

regarding seeing different peoples weapons fail, you would need to test similar maintained weapons. Also some shotguns just don't like certain ammo. I use federal target ammo and it has yet to have a failure. I have a new slp on the way monday (backup / home shotty).

The FN SLP Mark I has won more three gun titles than any others... The only thing I have on mine is a Nordic components charging handle/ bolt release button (40 bucks in parts just to reduce my stage times). I was thinking about getting the tefon follower but I have yet to really need to. Keep the weapon maintained... Btw I use gun butter.. best lube period, unless your in arctic conditions, then I would use LSA.

Re: Which shotgun for 3gun?

I shoot an M2 and it has a much softer recoil with the same loads than my friends SLP. But to each his own there are several that will more than do the job. Got to handle, but not shoot, the new JM Mossberg 930 the other day. For the money, looks to be a decent competitior...

The slp has won more titles because Daniel Horner used to run that shotgun but since the versamax came out it has been the M2 or the versamax that has won every match.

Re: Which shotgun for 3gun?

To a non shotgun guy, can someone tell me what the real differences are between the M1 and M2 Benelli's?

Re: Which shotgun for 3gun?

FN SLP MK I
Put in the light weight gas piston and never look back.
I've take classes at BW and run 3-Gun with it and the only limiting factor is my skill level.

I think the stock is the greatest difference. The M2 field has the comfor-tech which reduces felt recoil noticeably. There are other differences like a metal trigger guard on the M1 and what not but I think the comfor-tech stock is the biggest difference.

Re: Which shotgun for 3gun?

I have a Winchester SX2 Practical MK2 with 22" barrel, its the same as the F/N SLP MK1 but a different sight on it. I decided all those local guys with their M2's must know something I didn't so went and bought an M2 with a 24" barrel. I tricked it all out with the lightened bolt, +7 tube, Nordic charging handle, and welded up the notch so you ghost load the carrier. Then I went and shot a steel challenge match with each to see which I worked better with. I was faster and more accurate with the SX2, so even though I liked the M2 it went bye bye.

Re: Which shotgun for 3gun?

I run a 21" M1 field with a bunch of custom work performed by Copeland Custom of Ark City, KS. This gun is setup to load weak handed while the shotgun is still shouldered.
Custom Mods
9 round mag extension.
Lightened the carrier by 20% and advanced the timing of the elevator to cycle faster.
Modified the elevator to hold the extra round for a total of 11.
Light mod extended choke, works well for most 3-gun.
Enlarged the loading port for smoother loading.
Welded up the elevator to keep from pinching my thumb .
Shortend the stock by an inch and fit to my NPOA.
Flip up 10-22 rear sight dovetailed in the rail and fiber front

Thier is a lot of shotguns out their that better manage the recoil than the Benelli.
I would consider a M1 or M2 if you intend to load weak hand. If you intend to roll/flip and then load I would choose a different brand like the Winchester or FN

Enjoy, Brandon
