Alright guys, my wife and I are looking to take an adults only vacation, no kids. We have been looking at St. Lucia... I like camping & hiking, she likes the beach. So anything with both would be great, thats kinda why we have been looking at St. Lucia... It has mountains and beaches.

The big thing that we want on vacation is adventure, but relaxation as well. So maybe sitting on the beach with a drink, then maybe some day hikes with sights to see.

If you guys have been anywhere badass for a married couple, who arent big on the club or drinking scene let me know please. And post some pics if you can!

Thanks guys!

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

Hedonism ???? Def some exercise involved there.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

One year my wife and I (this is BC Before Children) took off on a road trip, hiked Bryce Canyon, Zion and the Grand Canyon. Was a great time, and it really wasn't that expensive, compared to Hawaii or something at least like that.

On the way home, we hit up Vegas, neither of us are big gamblers or drinkers but its Vegas!

Was one of our better vacations, for not being bothered, lots and lots of pictures, with funny stories we still kid about.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

Make sure you go to a beach! My wife is Greek-American, and loves the beach, esp. The Mediterranean and Greek islands. Most Greek Islands have plenty of sights and walking trails, but the thing is really the beach.

Thassos, Patmos, Poros, Paros, and many I can't recall, but we never hit a bad Greek island.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

Puerto Rico. Awesome hiking, caves to look around in, lots of old history, awesome beaches. Stay somewhere near Arecibo, go for a drive to Ponce, look around and have a good time. Great food and city life in San Juan so go visit it a little, but to get out from the hustle and bustle stay elsewhere on the island. I believe they opened an airport on the other side of the island now. The air port we flew into was San Juan as it was the only one... The old US Airforce base is on the other side the island, that's what they were going to make an airport out of, logical.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

If you go Grand Canyon, go to the south portion and hike down the Havasupai trail - great waterfalls (series of three of them that get larger the farther you go), nice views in the canyon, too.
Here's one from the 200 ft falls down there.

Then after you're done with GC, head on up to Zion, Bryce, Arches, and MOAB as has already been mentioned. Can't beat it.

+1 .... Great Vacation.... nice and relax... and then... go like rabbits!.... Sling some Rum.... go like rabbits!... then nice and relaxed... nice and relaxed.. oh.. Blow Jobs by the Scumba's bar!.... go like a rabbit.. then nice and relaxed.... then check in to your room....

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

Any of the south caribbean is going to give you things like that. All the former French colonies, St. Lucia, St. Barts, Montserrat, etc. are nice places. The only thing you have to decide is how bad you want to "rough it" and how much of a PITA it may be to get there.

Puerto Rico is a nice option as well. Some great hiking, no passport, and beautiful resorts/ beaches. Plus its easy to get to. Sure, some of it is a shit hole but that's anywhere.

If you really have some coin to spend I would also suggest Croatia or anywhere on the Agean sea. Israel is nice too but may be too dangerous for you.

Just some thoughts and yes, I've been to everywhere mentioned.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

St Thomas and St Maarten were pretty awesome, we did a western Caribbean cruise hitting Nassau, st Thomas, st Maarten, horse back riding, hike/snorkel/kayak, parasailing, snorkeling, dolphin encounter

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

St. Lucia is nice. I was there a few years ago.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

My wife and I are both into hiking. We have hiked Havasupai and stayed over 2 days, then hiked out.

We hiked the Grand Canyon this past September (on my 60th birthday) down the Bright Angel trail and stayed over at Phantom Ranch for 2 days, then hiked out.

For both of these, make reservations a year in advance.

The BEST vacation I have been on was a week long cruise of Alaska's inner passage aboard Princess cruise lines. During the day, you are off ship hiking, biking, etc and then back on the boat for dinner, shows, etc. Each day is a new adventure, AND I didn't have to drive anywhere. I loved it.

Next year, for our 20th anniversary (I've been married 3 times....Yeah, I know. I am a glutton for punishment) we plan to do the same cruise. It will be only my second.

We have also done Hawaii, the big island. Hiked all over in Volcano national park and spent some time at various beaches around the island. It was nice, but I had to drive everywhere.

My wife's idea of a vacation is get up before dawn, go like hell all day long, and fall exhausted into bed at night. Then get up and do it all over again the next day.

To that I say BULLSHIT. Mercifully, she is getting older.

Needless to say, there will NEVER be a 4th marriage. There is a lot to be said for "rental property".

Regardless what you do, have fun.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

Key West Florida. Super relaxing, great food, awesome fishing, night life if you like, plenty to see and do. Great for the kids too if so inclined.

Have also done Oahu and Maui. Maui is unbelievable, Oahu too crowded. Had a good time there but, Maui is better in all aspects. SPENDY compared to the Keys, however.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

Key West? HAHAH, funny, especially since you live so close to San Fran...is there something you are trying to hide? I have been to the Florida and it's keys many times, and Key West is my least favorite key. The only thing there is the beach, homosexuals and bars. Bars and homosexuals are not especially enjoyable for me, and Florida has some of the best beaches in the world, but Key West isn't one of them.

I would go with what others here have said, and pick a place within the US. Not only will it be cheaper, but I am sure that almost everyone knows a place within this once Great country that you have always wanted to explore.

OBX ... pristine beaches and incredible history. Not much of a scene there except beach houses and people taking it easy.

We usually stay a little to the south end as it is quieter.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

St John is mostly national park
its a mountainous island like St Thomas and Jamaica
good hiking and very relaxing

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

How adventurous are you? Would you like...

White water rafting the most incredible jungle rivers, exploring side streams with amazing waterfalls and pristine pools and staying the night in an "ewok" village 40 feet up in a tree to be woken by howler monkeys in the morning?

Follow that up with a trip to a spa that is fed by natural hot water springs from an active volcano. After a massage and a day of relaxing, sip your drinks in a hot water pool bar with a view of the sun setting behind the volcano and glowing lava flowing down it.

Take a jungle hike to a secluded beach, where the only other competition for beach space around is the monkey trying to steal the food out of your backpack.

Stay at 4 and 5 star hotels and live it up like a celebrity for the price of an average night at the Comfort Inn.

Check out Costa Rica. Best vacation I've ever had.

Also, Belize was pretty similar (and the added benefit of the official language being English if you don't speak Spanish). Belize also has some of the world's best reef diving, and amazing spelunking trips (you can actually go caving in active Mayan archeological dig sites and see artifacts and skeletons).

If you're interested in something less active, but still with adventurous options in an area that is less commercial, St. John.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

Hedonism/Jamaica is cool, St. Barts is nice, Belize was a great trip and offers what you are looking for too.

Should you decide to stay in the US I would have to recommend the hike to Havasupai Falls as others have. My wife and I did many exotic vacations before kids and now it's easier to do smaller in states vacations. Road trips are great if you just go and don't have a set schedule. You may want to weigh out airfare prices vs gas prices and overseas travel prices vs in state food/lodging prices to help make an informed decision.

There are millions of beautiful places right here in the US that are worth visiting!!!

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

Check out Lake Powell. It straddles the Arizona/Utah border and is amazingly beautiful (with beaches). It's kind of late in the game, but you may still be able to rent a houseboat. Huge lake, and lots of placed to hide along the shoreline and relax in privacy.

I try to stop there for at least a day anytime I get near it.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

Hawaii.

You can hike above 10,000 feet and be on beautiful beaches 2 hours later.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

+1 on St. Thomas.

The wife and I went in 2007 and it was beautiful. We stayed at the Ritz Carlton and while it was pretty, I think you could stay somewhere that wasn't so expensive or out of the way.

Also rent a car. Taxi's are way overpriced and charge by the person not the trip. From the Ritz to Town $10 US per person. Yikes.

Whatever you do, don't be sucked into the "Swim with Sharks" event at the aquarium. Lame to extreme. The only thing that was scary was how fast our $50 a person disappeared.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

As stated previous, there is another direction. Check out the Muskwa-Ketchika area, and see what packages and tours are available.

You won't find scenery, hiking, fishing, and hunting like that anywhere else.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

Most of the carribean islands are crapholes outside of the resorts..... Which are really only good for drinking at.

Costa Rica is supposed to be nice but I've only passed through.

Check out BAJA and see if you can swim with some great whites or whale sharks.

We did a week in MOAB last fall and loved it. We go to Europe a couple times a year and usually have a blast of that's an option for y'all.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

If you like to scuba dive, Curacao. Like has been said, watch most of the Carribbean off of the resort. Dirt poor countries and a percentage of the population are looking to get easy money, if you understand my meaning. St. Lucia IS nice, been there several times. Stay on the resort or be willing to be confronted many times. St. Maarten, St. Croix, etc, etc, etc are all nice places but their mindset is a bit different when they see a "rich" white couple on vacation and they scrounge a few dollars here and there. Just be cautious when out and about on your own. Have visited damn near every known island in the Carribbean buy boat as well. Usually about 1 mile offshore the kids start showing up in their dingys asking to help you or bring you "something". You politely say no thanks. Some are persistant, some go away. Some days you get their big brother visiting you in say a 17' powerboat. They are usually armed (concealed) and you watch them hard. After a few minutes of "no thank yous" Its best to provide superior weaponry. Piracy is alive and well in those waters. Too many stories to tell here as my typing sucks. Aruba, like St. Lucia, has more money than most other islands. Just be safe, be wary off the resort in the Carribbean.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

St. Lucia is magnificient!!!!

Go, and while you're down there, take an intro to SCUBA class.

You won't regret it.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

I have to 2nd and 3rd Hawaii. Maui is all you need. All the beach you can stand and 10,000ft Haleakala to Hike or bike. There are wonderful trails through the rainforest on the Hana side with all the beauty you can imagine. Go to the Lahaina side for great snorkel and scuba oportunities and now is prime time for whale watching. You can hear them when you are snorkeling near the beach and see them from the beach. The wife and I were there last month and it was the best vacation we ever had. Must go back when the funds are replenished!!! -- and you MUST scuba.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

I would post some pictures of Coronado Island but then everyone would come here and it would take me longer to get home after work.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

I guess you never strayed far from the compound... I spent 2 years there and it was marginaly ok. That is until 2 navy officers were shot dead in the street. this was in the 90s right outside the bar we hung at. Went back around 5 years ago not by choice and it was a tourist ghost town. Zero yachts in Charlot Amalie no cruise ships and the Navy wrote it of after the killings in the 90s.. Get a grip<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Mister John Galt</div><div class="ubbcode-body">+1 on St. Thomas.

Little island off the NE coast of Brazil. No resorts... Limeted tourists.. Just like the old days. Been all over the carib by occupation and this is the place...

The murder happened in an area called "Sub Base" which was west of Charlotte Amalie. Although it did hit the island for a loop and the Navy rapidly pulled out, the tourism did it's best to try and survive. I lived on St. Thomas for a number of years in Frenchtown back in the early 90's and can verify it did start to decline although we were still seeing 6-9 cruise ships all the time. I think the big kicker was when hurricanes Marilyn and Opel came through in '95 (we lost our house) and it went down hill from there. My MEPS station was PR and my Home of Record was Bolongo Bay. I always got a laugh when I would tell everyone the Navy was going to pay to send me back to the Caribbean when I was through and no one every believed me....until the service record came out.

Although if you want to do nothing but sit around, St. John's is still nice. If you want to party nothing beats Jost Van Dyke. But I think the VI's are played out. But for S&G you can try the Bitter End YC in the BVI's.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

Based on what you are looking for, adventure and great beaches.
Costa Rica is hard to beat.
the prices there are cheap and the locals are friendly.
there are some overly tourist areas, but most of the place is pretty 1970s.
They still have "disco bars" with saturday night fever posters..
Awesome hiking areas right near beaches, trails through jungles are safer than most 3rd world countries.

For sure. Tons to do, less crowded especially off season, but not as remote as Kauai. Snorkling Molokini crater is unreal.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

If you're looking for adventure, St. Lucia is the wrong place. It is very beautiful. The pitons cascade right into the sea. The scuba diving was pretty good. The problem is that there is almost nothing outside of the resort.

The trip was very expensive. The flights in and out are very hectic and required two connections and an overnight stay for us to get there. The flight home was delayed and we got stranded in Miami. There is only one plane in and out per day.

If you go, take the helicopter from the airport to the hotel. It is at least an hour drive otherwise. Very sketchy roads and an extremely poor village that you drive through. It's not very picturesque.

I was also told that the city is very dangerous at night. They have the usual tourist traps and bars around the cruise ship port. When the ship is in port, extra security is hired. When the ship isn't there supposedly it's quite a different story.

All I can tell you is that judging by what my wife and I saw on the drive from the airport to the resort, and the info we got from the hotel manager, we decided to just stay on the resort and enjoy ourselves there. We did a bit of hiking and I did some diving. We stayed at Sandals and the resort was outdated and a bit dirty. I feel it was falsely advertised. Certainly not recommended.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

Alright guys this is awesome! My wife has been to Kauai and would love to go back, but flights are mighty expensive. We are still debating on where to go, please share more experiences, especially the bad ones!

Thanks

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

Maui Hawaii. Hands down all time favorite place.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

Moloakai is also good but not as commercial. There is a BEACH there that is the best one I have ever been to , and I ve been to a few.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

Ok, ok... My wife and I have figured it out! We were going to go all out and leave the country but instead we are going to hike around Appalachian trail. Specifically the place I started at last year, Fontana Dam, NC. We are going to do day hikes, maybe an overnighter. Zip lines, swimming, etc... We are still planning the rest, but she was stoked when we started looking at some of the pics I took from my trip last year. I am excited, I really like it there and I know we will have lots of fun. I will post some pics when we get back. Thank you all for your input!

I don't blame you! We were there last Spring. Right across the bridge from SD. I told the wife that I would only live in Cali if it were here. Beautiful place.

Re: Recommendations for Vacation-- Serious Post

The wife and I have been to Caribbean numerous times. We got married in Jamaica. Enjoyed it a lot, but the there are shady areas of the island that you really need to be careful with.If it's just going to be you and the wife and you want to have an adventure, the smaller Islands are nice. St. Croix is nice if you want to get away from the tourist traps. And St. John and St. Thomas are a short boat ride away all with great snorkeling and scuba and spectacular food. The wife and I love VEGAS as well. Its our long weekend get away favorite.
