Finally found a Springfield Champion Lightweight Bi-Tone I could afford and put my money down. I should have it next week. Super stoked!

Any hefty guys on here (40-42 inch waist and a mild "dunlap") who carry a compact 1911 concealed? I'll be looking for an IWB that is comfortable for extended carry, including while driving. Although I <span style="font-style: italic">am</span> losing some girth, I expect I'll be on the portly side for some time still, and having a holster that doesn't allow the beavertail to dig into my fleshy parts is a must. Obviously, ability to get the pistol out without fumbling is important. I've tried some holsters that did a wonderful job of concealment, but access to the firearm was redonkulously slow.

I used to carry an SOB holster, but I have found that it is uncomfortable for me after about eight hours (I mean "get this thing the hell <span style="font-weight: bold">off</span> me" uncomfortable) due to a combination of arthritis in and an injury to my spine. Shame too...I used to like the access the SOB gave me while driving.

As always, I appreciate the input from the members of this forum.

Sparks VM-2 ... mind PMing me what your find is setting you back? I saw a nice half-rail non-TT example of the same today and am trying to get an idea of the deal.

+1 on the Milt Sparks VM2. I used to carry the Light weight Champion in one. Unfortunately I sold it. But I replaced it with a Springfield EMP that I carry in a VM2. There are copies of it like the cross breed super tuck that is a little less expensive. But you can's go wrong with the VM2 though.

Re: New carry gun inbound...holster question

Thanks for the replies, guys! In surfing around I had completely forgotten about good ol' Milt Sparks leather. It's always been good stuff, and the VM-2 looks like a solid holster. I definitely like the optional clips that will allow "tucked-in" carry.

I must admit that I'm intrigued by the idea of the interchangeable bodies on the MTAC. Being able to carry different guns in the same position with the same "feel" has some appeal, since I do have more than one firearm that I carry. (I normally carry a 357 Sig in the warm months and a 45 in the cold weather.)

Re: New carry gun inbound...holster question

I just got my fl ccw, so I don't have to much experiance with holsters but I got a crossbreed super tuck. it is a really good holster, I ccw a full size p220 elite and I forget I have it on most of the time and it doesn't print at all

Re: New carry gun inbound...holster question

I've been carrying mt TRP in a cheap Uncle Mikes #5 IWB holster. I took it and sewed in some threads to make the gun fit tighter than normal and it works great. It's the one with the retention strap. I'm a little on the biiger side also. I know it is nothing fancy or nice but it works for me. Also easy to remove and replace as needed.

I carry a compact 1911 all day and do a lot of driving as well. I'm very happy with the DeSantis Cozy Partner.

Re: New carry gun inbound...holster question

I've been carrying a Colt Officers Model for about 23 years.

After all the usual suspects I have remained attached to the Bianchi 3S. While I am far from "portly" it is very comfortable for extended periods of time including when driving. On occasion I have forgotten that I was carrying it and have stepped out w/o covering it back up.

I have also done the stick it in my waist band and go method and it works just as well but you may end up drawing your holster if you are not cognizant.

I have 2 unused that I keep in reserve just in case they ever stop making them

Cheers,

Doc

</div></div> I agree, also have and have used the VMII. Matt Del Fatti makes a similar style, ISP-LP which is excellent (but not cheap.)

Re: New carry gun inbound...holster question

If you are carrying a 1911 IWB, I love the Alessi PCH. The guys over at the 1911 forum suggested it (some over the VMII) and now I understand why. Its much more comfortable (for me) than the VMII, and hides better IMO.

Holsters are like opinions though, we all have about 2,473 :p

1. You're in NJ, which means that you can't carry there, and you <span style="font-style: italic">just</span> got a FL CCW, which means that you come to PA and carry, outside of what I presume to be your ordinary routine. So, that gives you what, a month of occasional, part-time carry?

2. Admittedly, you have very little experi<span style="font-weight: bold">e</span>nce with holsters, which is why you then go on to say that, in your inexperienced opinion, the SuperTuck is "a really good holster." Riiiight. Having nothing more than a keyboard and an opinion doesn't earn you any gold stars.

Re: New carry gun inbound...holster question

At least consider an ankle holster. I'm not the biggest fan, but my buddy (280#s) does great with a compact Kimber in one.

I put myself on the clock for a draw and fire with an ankle holster vs my normal high belt holster wearing a coat. My times were almost identical.

Yeah...I wasn't filming myself draw that day.

Re: New carry gun inbound...holster question

Veer_G,

I have a Crossbreed & love it for comfort for my XDm, It does print, but for driving its been nothing but comfortable. Haven't used it as an everyday carry though since the gun its for is a little too big.

What's you beef w/ Crossbreed? My only complaint is that it doesn't hold the pistol steadily in place when your belt's loose - same as most kydex, level 1 holsters.

Re: New carry gun inbound...holster question

I used to carry a 1911 in the Milt Sparks VMII as others have said. Was very comfortable. The only issue I ever had with it was when I was in a class and dropped down on my right side to shoot laying down, I pinched the internal form down and I couldn't re-holster without reforming the holster.

I've since changed my carry gun to a glock 19 and for the reasons above I wanted a kydex holster for concealed carry. I found the Comp-Tac MTAC and it's a hybrid with leather near the skin for comfort and kydex on the outside for durability. It's great and just as comfortable as the VMII was.

That unsteadiness is part of my beef with them, too. For one thing, they're useless for typical day-long carry in that they're a disaster if you have to hit the BR they want to dump the pistol out once you've removed the tension of your body and belt from the equation. For another, even under tension the holster is slippy as hell on the waistline because of the type of leather and the way that it's treated. And lastly, the clips don't retain adequately against whatever belt they're set on. I'm not even going to get into the whole Boondock Saints thing that the brand has goin' on.
