Wanting to hear from folks who use a FFP scope for a multipurpose rifle, hunting and long range shooting. I'm wanting to know if you feel handicapped vs. a SFP scope for hunting. I'm concerned specifically with short range (large game who present at short range (50-100 yards). Also, please mention your magnification range. Thanks in advance and happy Easter weekend!

Re: Anyone using a FFP scope for multipurpose rifle?

I use one deer hunting and long range. Premier 3-15 with the Gen. 2. Shot a deer last year at 70 yards with no issue. I have hunted for a long time with a SFP scope and had no issues switching over. I think you will be fine.

Re: Anyone using a FFP scope for multipurpose rifle?

Here is how I look at it, most hunters have no need to range 50-100. At 3x with a 3-15, the mildot reticle resembles a duplex. If you zero your scope at 100Y, with a 308 168-175 gr'r about 2650-2700 fps the, POI shift within the kill zone will be negligible. The 308 is rather flat from 50-100. Here is just a quick example using federal ammo, you can verify with your own loads and ballistic software

I was thinking of a Premier Hunter for my deer rifle, Euro Optics has a $300 off deal atm.

Re: Anyone using a FFP scope for multipurpose rifle?

ASSUMING good ret design, I don't see how an FFP scope could be a detractor for hunting. Now most hunters use guestimates/Kentucky windage for hold-over/hold-off. So they would see no benefit. For a real shooter making precision shots on game, there's no reason to not have an FFP scope which will ensure you don't have to know what power you're on and adjust your dope. After I started using FFP, I won't use anything else unless it's on a 1-4.

Re: Anyone using a FFP scope for multipurpose rifle?

I use a SS 3-9 on my MWS.....

Use that rifle for almost everything; my 100-500 precision rifle, my deer stand rifle, my "put in the jeep n go" rifle...

Havent felt the slightest bit handicapped. And, since going from a 4-16 and 3-18 scope on the rifle; I've found I do better these days with slightly less magnification at most ranges I shoot at.

Re: Anyone using a FFP scope for multipurpose rifle?

Thanks for the replies. I'm most concerned with sight picture and the ability to place a quick and calculated short range shot at the lowest magnification 3-4x. Given these circumstances, the reticle design will make the difference. At this point, I'm looking at the IOR valdada.

Re: Anyone using a FFP scope for multipurpose rifle?

At 50 to 100 yards on large game you won't see any difference. At that range put the crosshairs center mass and squeeze. The benefit to FFP is ranging And hold-over ability. As for ranging I usually just Pre range my hunting area and my view with a laser range finder anyway, but assuming your FFP has hold over dots, hashs , what ever that equates to mils then with a FFP scope your hold overs will be exactly same no matter the power setting. This makes for a nice no dialing set up. The Valada would be a great hunting scope with the ten mils of drop it has on the reticle equals no dialing. You just range ahead of time then when game appears hold the right drop line for that distance on whatever magnification you like and fire.

Re: Anyone using a FFP scope for multipurpose rifle?

The only scopes we use are FFP. That is for hunting, match and everything else. I feel anything but Handicapped by them!
At 50 to 100 yards....it doesn't matter what you have...Point and shoot!!!

Re: Anyone using a FFP scope for multipurpose rifle?

I hunt with the same rifle(s) that I target shoot with. I use USO SN--3 3.2-17x44 optics on both of them, which serve me well, even at low power settings. The ranging reticles (MPR& GAP) are small enough at the lowest setting that it can be used like a plain set of crosshairs.

Re: Anyone using a FFP scope for multipurpose rifle?

I use a FFP reticle for my hunting or all-purpose rig, no problems.

Re: Anyone using a FFP scope for multipurpose rifle?

Having a "multi-purpose" rifle is exactly why I started using a FFP scope. I would only feel handicapped if I were to go back to SFP!

Re: Anyone using a FFP scope for multipurpose rifle?

I just put a Premier Hunter w/Gen2mildot on my .25DTI AR-15 for coyotes & deer. At low power, that reticle appears as a standard duplex. Crank it up and the subtensions become evident & usable for holding over/off, if ya need to...
