Just received a Vortex 6-24 PST. I was wondering how necessary the shim washers are. Mine seems to zero right around the 1 mil base line so finding zero is easy in lighted conditions.

I used mine because my zero isn't as easy to find as yours. It just depends on your rifle.

I also used mine when I had it because it was higher than yours. If it is only one mil I would say don't worry about it because the washer won't get it to stop perfectly at zero anyways.

I use mine. Not sure how necessary they are... But the zero stop really makes it easy to return to zero after dialing up two or three revolutions on the turret.

If you dial any at all then they are very useful. I used mine without for a couple months then after installing them will find it tough to use a scope without a stop of some kind.

Decided to play around with the lathe and made a couple of thick shims rather than stacking up a lot of thin ones. I finally settled on the nylon unit at the bottom that snaps around the shaft and wont fall off. Probably no better than the stock shim pack with the grease. 0.920 OD x 0.625 ID

I never really thought that I would need the zero stop shims but I decided I would use them before I went to thunder valley precision. I am glad I did use them the first time, I couldnt even count how many times I lost track.
I now continue to use them and will probably never buy a scope with out zero stops.

I use them on mine(4-16x50 ffp MOA) installed on a AA 24" Grendel, only had 2 shims left over and it stops between 2 and 4 MOA past 0. I like them, I own a few sightron SIII which have the turret scale with 0 on the center and 1,2,3 in both directions (up & down) and I didn't have to adjust more than 5 MOA elevation to sight in so they are right on the 0 mark so no issue returning to 0 after dialing.

I do and find them useful. After I set the knob to zero, I go up about .5 mils then install the stack. This allows approx 2-3 extra shims so the knob stops a more solid at zero.

Which style? The white snap-in covers more area of the circle and provides more bearing area.

After installing the shims how do I get the bottom of the turret to line up with the the first vertical line on the elevation? I put them on my dads pst and would things to line up better.

You don't. The scale is absolute so that is why you need a settable zero.

Had a weird thing happen yesterday to one of our Vortex Viper PST 4-16 FFP scopes. We have one on a LR pistol for our 1000 yard matches. For the past year it's been flawless including the place the Zero Stop goes down to. Usually it stops 4 moa past zero the way we have it set and it's stayed exactly there since it was installed. Yesterday about halfway thru the match he cranked it down to zero to reset for a 720 yard target it stopped at +1 moa and he thought maybe the shims compacted more than usual and went farther down than usual.
He came up past zero again and up his usual amount and spotters said "no call" didn't see anything and at that distance we usually clean those targets. He rechecked it again and came up same amount and same thing, no call. He did it again and came up based on that +1 and centered it. It was in the 90's and seemed the temperature either swelled the shims or something inside and wouldn't allow it to go down to it's normal zero stop.
Later that evening we tried it again it was back to normal. Never happened before so we'll have to keep an eye on it and see what might of caused it. Before this we couldn't be happier with this scope and the way it functions. Love the zero stop which makes it easy to recheck your settings if you feel you might of gotten lost and worry about being a turn off.

Luckily something didnt look right and I kept messing with it till it went back to zero. Messing with it again today, and its still messed up, and will work properly one time, then be way off the next. I pulled the turret off to see if the shims looked jacked up or anything, but nothing looks wrong. I really dont know what to make of it.

I think I would call Vortex and start using the best Customer service in the industry. They promise to me "replace or fix" a PST i own and (different problem)I had a brand new one in 7 days.

I commented on a different post about mine not being repeatable on the zero stop and that is exactly what I was talking about. Also the illumination on mine sometime goes off with recoil, I installed a paper shim between the battery and the cap holding it and it hasn't happened since. I have never used or needed CS for a riflescope issue but I probably will this time

Installed mine yesterday...took 10 shims I believe.
Crude but very effective zero stop. Mine will go past zero .4 mills.

I use my on my 4x16, only takes a minute to install and takes away some of the user error when dailing up and down a lot

If your zero stoppish is dialing past zero, add the number of additional clicks to your zero click value and reshim.
Example: Lets say we shimmed our zero stoppish, but its going .8 mils past zero. Dial elevation to .8 mils, remove the turret knob, and reshim. When you replace the knob and dial back down to zero, the turret will reliably stop there. Don't forget to stagger the shims evenly, it seems to make a difference.
If your zero stoppish is dialing past zero, add the number of additional clicks to your zero click value and reshim.

But the point was – that there may be a time when a person unintentionally runs into the zero stop shims a little hard thinking he had another rev to go yet. This can easily happen when working a position with multiple targets and under pressure and old age for some.
The whole point of my reply was to mention the benefits of having the shims in and also some info for those who run a lot of base. The PSTs are great scopes for the investment just passing some info along.
