Hi all, I'm planning on getting started in the world of suppressors and I've decided to start with a .22 caliber can. My purposes will be primarily just for plinking and occasional pest control.

I don't currently own a .22 caliber pistol, and I was wondering what the hide could recommend as a good host for a rimfire can.

My biggest qualification is reliability, I've heard too many horror stories about pistols that are very selective with ammunition types.

Thanks in advance for the assistance!

Re: Best .22 pistol host

I like my Volquartsen build Ruger Mark whatever the best. I have the Sig Mos. Beretta Tom Cat and the Walther P22. The Walther has been terrible but I understand it was early production and they had problems. The sig has been good but stopped firing do to blow back after a few hundred rounds not sure what is normal, The Beretta I love because its tiny the Volquartsen/Ruger for function and accuracy. I have shot all of these of eight different .22 cans.

Good luck they are fun. PG

Re: Best .22 pistol host

Had a Walter P22, went to a Ruger 22/45. I like it better, though the Walther has the more normal handgun aspect to it. I just shoot better with the Ruger; and I can put a Burris Fastfire on it, which I like.

Edit: I think the 22/45 is a little quieter too with my Sparrow. Though the FRP is still high.

Re: Best .22 pistol host

I have had no problems with my P22 and on several occasions have shot more than a brick of ammo through it with no issues... I think some may just be finicky

Re: Best .22 pistol host

I've heard the same thing about picky eating by the Walthers. A buddy of mine just bought a S&W M&P 22, but I haven't heard much about them from anyone else. Any opinions?

Re: Best .22 pistol host

i cant speak for a supressor - i only wish i had one... but

for you p22 folks who are having grief - have you tried running a few hundred hyper velocity rounds through yours?

i read about them being fussy till they wear in and was recomended to run 1400 fps+ (velocitor's/stingers) through it to break it in for at least 200 rounds.

6 boxes of stingers later, i started feeding it federal bulk and have never looked back. It eats anything i put in the mag.

a p22 3" is supprisingly loud with stingers in it.

Re: Best .22 pistol host

Browning Buckmark for the win.
replacement barrel from Tactical Solutions and you are good to go.
Very reliable and fun as hell.

Re: Best .22 pistol host

Whats known to be the quietest and most reliable semiauto pistol?

Re: Best .22 pistol host

Browning Buckmark is optimal as a suppressed .22lr host.
It is easy to take down for cleaning.
The breach is wide open on both side to allow gas and debris to escape.
And they are inherently accurate.

As far as quietest and most reliable, with a semi auto rimfire, there are several factors that effect this.
Most important of which is ammunition.

Re: Best .22 pistol host

I personally run the Browning Buckmark, with a Tac Sol BBl, Pic rail. Quiet/accurate.
I also run a Ruger Mk II Integral. Also very quiet. Neither of these hosts will disappoint.
The other host I have heard a lot about but have not done is the S&W 422. A quick search will yield info on this gun as a host, but all the reviews have been favorable.

Re: Best .22 pistol host

I run a 7.5" Buckmark and a TacSol 1911/22 conversion on a dedicated frame. Both fun and accurate. I've also had a 422, which shot 'OK' but not as well as my other two.
In fact, while pop-can accurate, it shot way off to one side, even after a lot of rear sight adjustment, so I sold it. Got tired of holding several inches to one side of the can/squirrel.
I'd go Buckmark, or Ruger MKwhatever, and either thread the barrel or buy a TacSol one. Be aware that on the Ruger, the barrel costs as much as the gun. You might also want to find a used setup- it's unlikely the previous owner shot it enough to cause any wear. It's hard to wear out a .22.

Re: Best .22 pistol host

I have been running a M&P22 both suppressed and un suppressed for 6 months and never had a a problem except ammo related duds that are common with bulk pack .22. I have run every type of ammo through it I can find including all the different bulk pack brands with no trouble at all aside from the normal .22 that don't go off when hit.

Its been awesome gun and have never picked up my mosquito again since. I have run 2500 rounds through mine so far and about a 1000 of those was without cleaning and it never had an issue. Plus to mention they have 12 round mags.

If you want a sure thing the ruger mk pistols are about the most reliable but I would say working with my M&P its a runner up so far and you can't beat that its a full size pistol.

Re: Best .22 pistol host

Browning Buckmark + TacSol barrel & pic rail + Docter red dot + AAC Element = one very reliable and accurate pistol.

Remington Subsonic cycles well with this pistol and my daughters M&P 15-22 and are air gun quiet.

CCI Segmented HP Subsoics are a devastating small game round and very quiet.

They are priced well, but you really need to go look at one of these 22/45's before you buy. Some people think they are OK, and some folks hate them. I bought one of these and got rid of it within a week. The controls just feel cheap and gritty, and had a lot of malfunctions. I do like the Mark II's alot and many of the Mark III's. This one may be good for a factory gun. http://www.ruger.com/products/markIIIDE/models.html
I use a Mark II with a paclite barrel and Burris FF2 sight. But, the barrels cost more than the gun did. By friends shoot the Browning Buckmarks and I would not hesitate to buy one of those either.

Re: Best .22 pistol host

P22 and Tac-65. Zero issues with at least 10,000 rounds through it. I religiously disassemble and clean the Tac-65 every three bricks (1500 rounds or so). Gun eats everything I put in it expect Winchester Xpert, which I've never seen run in anything.

I think I'm the only person on the hide who admits to using and loving the Tac-65. But then I only paid $667.25 for my gun, can and tax stamp.

Oh and it's a hog killing mofo!

Re: Best .22 pistol host

M&P .22, runs awesome with cheap Fed bulk and very quite with CCI subs. Easy to take down and clean.

I've had 3 Ruger MK2s, never again......

Re: Best .22 pistol host

M&P with the Sparrow is awesome!! I haven't been able to find a cartridge it doesn't like. SO FUN, So quiet.

Re: Best .22 pistol host

Thanks for all the replies so far, I'm currently leaning towards either the M&P or maybe the 22/45 Lite. Any comments on those, besides the gaudy pimp paint job?

Also, I'm leaning towards a TBAC 22L-1 for the can. My only reservation is that it's not able to be disassembled for cleaning.

Re: Best .22 pistol host

Also, 346ci, what was your problem with the MkII's? I've shot some of these a little bit but don't have extensive trigger time on them, or any .22 auto pistols for that matter. Is there something specific to those that I should be wary of?

Re: Best .22 pistol host

None of the Ruger's really ran good and what a bitch to take apart. There are "reliablity kits" out but I never tried those. The model that just came out with the oem threaded barrel seems to be a good deal. If I were to get into another Ruger, that would be the one. Otherwise you will need to send your oem upper off to be threaded or find a PacLite that is threaded. They have the biggest aftermarket support out of all the .22 pistols.

I've had a few P22's also, not sure if they are still making the slides from pot metal but one of mine cracked. After it was repaired, I sold those also.

So far, no problems with the M&P. I have a M&P in 9mm and .357sig also so using the .22 gives me somewhat of a feel for the big boys but not near as much for ammo.

If you do go for the M&P and want to run a can, be prepared to spend another $50 on a adaptor from Gemtech. The P22s need one also.

I wouldn't even consider a rimfire can that doesn't come apart for cleaning. All that molten lead has to go somewhere.

Re: Best .22 pistol host

Juzt got a M&P-22 myself couple weeks ago. Thing is very accurate and with the suppressor sounds like a pop gun. Ma brothers joke it is "movie quiet." It is also a good pistol trainer for the real deal big brother M&P 9mm.

No problems and around 100 rounds through her so far.

Also, I got the SAS .22 suppressor. It is pretty legit. Does not come apart, but thats no biggy to me. It was affordable, and vewy vewy quiet wen gettin those pesky wabbits.

Good Luck,
DT

Re: Best .22 pistol host

My vote is also for the M&P 22.. I've had mine for a couple of weeks..
With my SWR Spectre mounted it runs quite well with CCI standard velocity, and the federal bulk ammo.. 250rds so far.. It doesn't seem to like the Wolf match target, (not enough pressure to cycle the action fully)..

All in all I'm satisfied with the 22, and the fact that it feels like it's big brother..

Re: Best .22 pistol host

I run a ruger 22/45 suppressed with a TBAC can and it rarely jams. Id go as far to say that as long as one is using quality ammo mine doesn't jam.

Re: Best .22 pistol host

I will say it is my "most" fun firearm to shoot hands down.

Buy lots of good ammo, shoot, smile...

Re: Best .22 pistol host

Im surprised the sig 1911 22 hasnt been mentioned. I have 1200 rounds of minimags through mine since the last cleaning without a single hiccup. Heres mine...

Re: Best .22 pistol host

M&P 22, P22, GSG1911ADOP. I run them all, if you shoot a 1911 the ADOP is hands down the best bang for the buck, M&P and P22 run great.

Re: Best .22 pistol host

I have a p22.

Its unreliable. Its got a terrible trigger. The grip feels small and wrong. It DOES NOT SUPPRESS WELL!!!

Re: Best .22 pistol host

Any more comments on the 1911's? I hadn't really thought of getting a rimfire 1911, but I am a 1911 fan in general.

And feel free to keep the pictures coming, they look great!
