new to the forum, hello.
i did a bit of searching and wasnt able to find what i was looking for so im posting up.

i dont have any formal shooting training, just basic saftey courses. shooting at 50-80 yards all my shots land to the right of the bullseye and down a bit. at that distace they are anywhere from 1-4 inches off center horizontal, and 1-3 inches vertically.
this happens while shooting my mosin nagant and also my smith and wesson ar15. both using irons. im pretty sure im doing something wrong.any ideas or suggestions?

Re: in need of some shooting tips

If you think the irons are set or others don't have a issue with stated rifles; Note your butt-stock position and make sure your not positioning it into the inside of your shoulder pocket into your upper chest or peck. Especially if you shoot with a aggressive angular stance. Try moving the butt more out into your shoulder and/or squaring up your shoulders 'more' to target.

Hard to tell, just a guess.

Re: in need of some shooting tips

Move the rear sight in the direction you want your impacts to go as indicated by you. Adjust your rear sight to the left and up. Be aggressive on your sight corrections if shooting 50 yards. Use a rest/sand bags to remove any inconsistencies in your hold. And try again. Let another shooter have few shots and compare.

ok, i played around with the sights a little bit but didnt notice a difference i think i just moved my head to view the sight instead of the gun. ill play around with shoulder position next time too.
thanks

Re: in need of some shooting tips

Always try and keep your cheek on the same part of the stock, practice your trigger pull, try making a huge adjustment on your sight and see where you are hitting the target and then check amd make adjustments to your sight every 3 shots.

Re: in need of some shooting tips

Sounds like you're muscling your gun to the left, as you shoot, your muscles relax causing the muzzle to point to the left.

Try getting a good NPA, follow all the basic fundamentasls and dry fire.

Get all lined up, good sight picture, close your eyes, drop the hammer, and without moving anything, open your eyes and see where you sights are in reference to the target.

Re: in need of some shooting tips

Good tips above. Try to find someone local that is knowledgeable to help you out. Learning by trial and error can get frustrating and expensive.

Let's start from scratch. Which eye is dominate? Which shoulder are you shooting from? Do you understand the principles of marksmanshiip, sight alignment and trigger control? Do you know how to support sight alignment and trigger control. Do you know how to zero either rifle you are shooting? Do you know their MOA click value for elevation and windage? I could go on and on; but, it appears you do not have an understanding about basic marksmanship. Any here could tell you how to do it; yet, it would be better to have someone show you how to do it. I'm not sure that any here telling you how to do it would be effective, that's to say, I don't think you'd understand much of anything after being told what to do. My advice, contact the CMP North Store in Port Clinton, OH and buy a basic marksmanship guide. Read and experiment.
