I can damned well guarantee you that those helicopters weren't "hovering" and pouring gunfire into the trees.

They were hauling ass in there and getting out as fast a possible.

Hovering in a hot LZ at that altitude would do nothing but assure the pilot that he, his crew and passengers would surely be killed.
