..ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A hiker in Alaska's Denali National Park photographed a grizzly bear for at least eight minutes before the bear mauled and killed him in the first fatal attack in the park's history, officials said Saturday.

Investigators have recovered the camera and looked at the photographs, which show the bear grazing and not acting aggressively before the attack, Denali Park Superintendent Paul Anderson said.

The hiker was identified late Saturday as Richard White, 49, of San Diego. He was backpacking alone along the Toklat River on Friday afternoon when he came within 50 yards of the bear, far closer than the quarter-mile of separation required by park rules, officials said.

"They show the bear grazing in the willows, not acting aggressive in any form or manner during that period of time," Anderson said of the photos.

Officials learned of the attack after hikers stumbled upon an abandoned backpack along the river about three miles from a rest area on Friday afternoon. The hikers also spotted torn clothing and blood. They immediately hiked back and alerted staff park.

Rangers in a helicopter spotted a large male grizzly bear sitting on the hiker's remains, which they called a "food cache" in the underbrush about 100 to 150 yards from the site of the attack on Friday.

A state trooper shot and killed the male bear on Saturday. Investigators examined the bear's stomach contents, looked at White's photos and used other tests Saturday evening to confirm that it was the animal that killed White, park officials said in a statement Saturday night.

White's remains were recovered Saturday evening and were being sent to the medical examiner in Anchorage.

There's no indication that the man's death was the result of anything other than a bear attack, investigators said, adding that it's the first known fatal mauling in the park's nearly century-long history.

"Over the years, and especially since the 1970s, the park has worked very diligently to minimize the conflict between humans and wildlife in the park," Anderson said. "We have some of the most stringent human-wildlife conflict regulations in the National Park system, and I think those are largely responsible for the fact that there hasn't been a fatal attack."

White had been in the Denali backcountry for three nights and may have recently hiked in other areas of Alaska, park officials said. It was unknown if he had previous backcountry experience in Denali.

Park officials said they don't believe other registered backpackers are in the immediate area. That portion of the park is closed but other wilderness areas remain open, officials said.

Prior to receiving a permit to hike in the area, all backpackers in the park receive mandatory bear awareness training that teaches them to stay at least a quarter-mile away from bears, and to slowly back away if they find themselves any closer. Investigators confirmed that the hiker had received that training.

Denali is located 240 miles north of Anchorage. It spans more than 6 million acres and is home to numerous wild animals, including bears, wolves, caribou and moose.

Re: Grizzly bear kills hiker/ Denali NP

I sure in the hell wouldn't want to be that close to a grizzly even with a big gun.

Re: Grizzly bear kills hiker/ Denali NP

Yeah I would never get that close to a grizz, at least it's a self-correcting error for those who do.

PSGWSP.

Used to live in Alaska and been around some grizzlies. Impressive as hell, like lightning's energy in a fur coat. Poor impulse control, strong as hell, hungry all the time, and not scared of anything. We are tasty and put up a poor fight.
The only way I'd get within 50 feet of one is if it didn't know I was there and I had a rifle. A big rifle.

It is most unfortunate, I read another report and it stated that the guy saw the bear and the pics on his camera were time stamped over an 8 minute interval. Although that still may not be enough time to avoid an attack he did not follow his training. Bear mauling has got to be one nasty way to go out.

Re: Grizzly bear kills hiker/ Denali NP

It's bullshit they killed the bear. Stories like this make me have zero remorse for the people that put themselves in harms way.

Re: Grizzly bear kills hiker/ Denali NP

Yeah, it's hot garbage that the bear (NPS and AK troopers are still tracking down the others that were feeding on the body, so it may become plural) had to die, but it's just like a dog getting the taste of blood.

when we got the word through the grapevine at my ranger station, we all did the collective "aww, shit.". Half of my job is soothing tourists' collective bear paranoia, and making sure they don't do anything damn stupid on the trail that will get them and the animal killed. Now this mess is just going to make it that much harder to knock the sense into these folk.
I'm hoping we won't have any more incidents, but I'm bracing for it, because somebody's gonna see that on the news before they come up here, go out on one of our trails, and possibly do something irrevocably idiotic that leads to the severe injury of themselves, their loved ones, and the local wildlife.

The only reasons anyone should be this close to a bear is if by accident(in which case they're going to try and get away as calmly and quickly as possible), or if they're one of these hunters that uses predator calls to get the bear to charge at him for a more intimate hunting experience. I'd imagine hunting like that would take some serious Cajones, and a good friend with a trusty backup gun.

Bears are too easy to get along with, just don't mess with em unless you intend for one of you to eat the other. And from what my girlfriend says, a bear makes a fine meal.

The Guy made a DUMB ASS mistake...

I have done DUMBASS things more than once in my life and only by the grace of God have survived.

I feel very sad for the guy and his family His mistakes cost him his life and his family tremendous grief.

Alone 50 yards from a Grizzly is not time to take photos, It is time to back up and slowly leave.

People with No common sense!
That is what the Park Service has to assume when they make their rules. They have rules that are trying to protect the huge number of visitors who have no common sense and are clueless. Lots of Park rules I do not like, but if put in the same position of trying to protect the masses I might have to come up with some of the same silly rules.

Over 35 years from the Brooks Range to Cold Bay my company has taken over 15,000 clients into bear country some were hunters, some bearviewing clients, fishing and whitewater rafting clients. In all the years we have only had to kill 1 Grizzly in self defense, (I don’t count wounded bears that charge as self defense “.

However I strongly disagree with anyone that says 50 yards is too close to a Grizzly or Brown Bear. Blanket statements of how close is a safe distance from a bear is silly. At Katmai and McNiell people are within 20 yards of bears quite often. A group of people sitting on top of a cut bank overlooking a stream full of salmon with Grizzly’s fishing in the stream can be quite safe even when a Grizzly occasionally gets within 15 yards.
We have Grizzly’s within 20 yards of clients several times a season often feel safe. That said I have had a Grizzly 150 yards away that I was concerned enough that I had my gun in my hand and had clients put cameras down and have their bear spray ready. Every situation and every bear is different.

As to getting a Grizzly killed! Most bears have a natural fear of man.
That bear did not and was willing to kill a man so In my opinion it is better that bear is taken out of the gene pool. I am glad the Trooper did his job and hope he gets an atta-boy from his boss.

I laugh at the stupid statement in the article that says “not acting aggressive in any form or manner “ Dumb Media or clueless type response . Predators will often act like they are ignoring the prey or act like they do not see the prey while the predator is in process of getting into killing range or setting up an ambush. As a rule a bear that is acting aggressive at 50 yards is being defensive and just telling you back off and stay away. Personally I am glad that bear is out of the gene pool, Just Like some people or domestic dogs there are some bears that are better off being put down.

In Alaska you are far more likely to die in a car crash, drown, die in a plane crash or be killed by a 2 legged varmint than be attacked by a bear. So do not get your panties in a wad over bears they rarely attack people, use your head and be prepared then enjoy the Alaska Bush any time you have a chance. In the right situation bears are fun to watch and to take photos of.
