If you can, try the Viperskins as well. I was never comfortable behind the original thumbhole skins, the Viperskins made it much better.

Re: SHWW Group

Looking ahead to next year's match schedule...

How many of you 'tactical' shooters here in the great state of WA that currently *don't* shoot F-class of any kind, would possibly be interested if there was a class that allowed brakes, cans, tactical bipods only, mag length rounds only, no 30" barrels, etc.? Something where your existing tactical rifle would be able to compete straight up against other tactical rifles, not against the dedicated F/TR and F/Open setups.

Looking at something like what is outlined in this thread for a basis.

I'm very interested in your feedback on this, whether via post or by PM.

Re: SHWW Group

I found a better synopsis... that thread, while entertaining, does run a bit far afield

Re: SHWW Group

I would try to shoot those matches, just to get more practice. However, those rules would work against suppressed rifles. I typically shoot a 20" .308, and would prefer to compete in limited, but my can would put me the over the length and weight limits and into open class...

Could those rules be applied to the rifle without the suppressor?

I'd think the rules for barrel length should be measured to the crown, not the end of the muzzle device. The overall weight, however, should take in the rifle and all accessories attached to it (brake, can, bipod, etc)

Re: SHWW Group

Oh Great King of all Wookies, and big hairy things,

That sounds like a great idea... if people show up as we have talked in the past (myself included).

What if you/we somebody organized a trial run of a match and see what people show up with to shoot. Then collectively we could figure out class structure.

Would distances be the same as F-class?
Would time limits be the same?
Thanks

Re: SHWW Group

Ideally this kind of match would be run concurrent with/ along side conventional HP Prone or Fullbore matches - to get more shooters on the line, and hopefully a little cross-pollenation of experience, etc. Granted, at least over here we typically only have one or two sling shooters (three if I'm feel bored and dust off the iron-sight gun). If there is enough interest i.e. actual repeat turnout on the firing line it may be feasible to hold dedicated matches just for this.

There are basically two kinds of match formats currently being used... 'string' fire, where you shoot by yourself, and have a block of time - typically 22-25 minutes for sighters and 20 record shots - and you can shoot as fast as your target puller can keep up, or as slow as you want (waiting out a condition change). The fastest shooters may be done in 5 minutes or a tad less, most of the line will typically be in the 10-13 minute range. The other 'style' is Fullbore or 'pair' fire... both shooters on the ground side by side (thats where muzzle brakes are going to be *really* fun) and alternate shots. The sighters are convertible i.e. a little bonus if your CBS is dead on, the number of shots a little lower (10-15) and over all a little more 'social' - technically 'coaching' is not allowed, but some chit-chat (or harassment
wink.gif
) between shooters is typical.

As for the 'rules' outlined above... at this point I'd say they are more like 'guide lines'. As a match director, I don't generally have the time nor the inclination to check every single competitor for rifle weight, barrel length, dimensions, rear bag weight, bullet weight, etc. - not without more of a support infrastructure of one. That's actually one of the arguments I have *against* this kind of match... all the extra rules sounds wunderbar until you're the one tasked with enforcing them. E.g. the barrel length - to the crown might be more 'correct', but with permanently attached brakes and other people not wanting to unscrew their cans... much more expedient to just say 'to the end of the barrel, including whatever is attached to it'. And the weight does, as far as I'm concerned, include everything on the gun - scope, can, bipod, sling, tethered rear bags... basically anything that comes with the gun when you pick it up off the ground.

Again, the above would be primarily a 'guide line', and adherence would be mainly voluntary / on-your-honor. Depending on how many people would show up and the caliber mix, it may not be practical to split it between FPR-Limited (.308/.223) and Open calibers - people need to realize that up front, and be prepared to shoot anyways with no whining because they showed up with a .308 shooting 168 FGMM.

Re: SHWW Group

Tri-county gun club did something very similar. The tactical rifles shot the same course of fire, just used different rifles. All the scoring, and target pulling was the same, so it worked out really well.

It is a great idea, and Tri-county found that there were lots of new shooters coming out and everyone got along really well. The only issue was muzzle brakes, but they just got sent to one end of the range, so that solved that issue.

Re: SHWW Group

The fun part is going to be that my .338LM will make weight and just squeak under the barrel length limit.

I'm sure some lucky individual(s) will just *love* shooting next to that thing, especially if we do 'pair' firing

Re: SHWW Group

I have 2 protégé's that want to get into tactical match shooting. I might get them to do a 'pair' fire match with me to give them a small sampling of what a match atmosphere can be like. We'll see if I can concentrate for an entire match...
no-doze and pillow in hand :)

Re: SHWW Group

Awesome WG, I'm not sure if everything was packed, we ran out of a few styles, so those will ship next week. Maybe all yours did go out, some people were not so lucky!

Re: SHWW Group

Jim,
You must be a very careful hunter. My rifles look worse than that after a couple of trips to the range. Maybe I'm just tough on guns..

Good luck with the sale.

Re: SHWW Group

So how bad is all the fires and smoke in the Wenatchee area ?
The news makes it look pretty bad but we all know how the news is.

Re: SHWW Group

Im in Cle Elum, and you can see the fire working its way over the hills on the east end of town. The valley has been filled with smoke for days. It was so bad one day I thought Easton was on fire.

Cant speak for Wenatchee since I aint there, but I would imagine its pretty smokey.

Re: SHWW Group

Wow that's sounding pretty brutal !
Hopefully they'll get everything contained sometime soon.

Re: SHWW Group

I was in Wetsnatchee Wednesday, and again Saturday night and Sunday am. Saturday evening a breeze blowing cleared a bunch of the smoke out of the valleys, but from Cle Elum East visibility in general was fairly poor downwind of the fires. I think theres an advisory for stagnant air for the next few days in eastern WA. With some of the terrain the fires are burning in, it will take fall rains to quelch some areas as its not safe to put people there. If I wouldnt have been moving a kid to college last week in S. OR, Id be on the fireline right now myself.

Re: SHWW Group

If the wind comes in it blows the smoke away, Helicopters have a better visibility to drop water on the fires , but the wind fans the fire good. If no wind, the ground crews can get in on it but the heli's can't see shit. I see lots of private firefighting units rolling around Cashmere & Wenatchee in the morning as i go to work.

Man Mike that is ugly as hell looking !
Wonder if the "No smoking within 25' of a business door" really matters at the moment.

On another note SHWW just needs a moderator to delete the good guys list and hot girl friends thread and we'll officially be king of the hill !

Now off to post naked political tattooed chicks showing pink in both of those threads and we'll be good to go

Re: SHWW Group

Prayers sent Broker!

The two large fires in North Central WA, Table Mountain and portions of the Wenatchee Complex will most likely combine today for a ~70,000+ acre monster. Portions of highway 97 will be closed (Blewett) for firefighting and burnout operations. The firefighters really need a break in the weather, moisture, and not the potentially dry cold front (wind with some chance of lightning and little or no precipitiation) that is forecast.

Lets hope we get some measurable rain...SOON!
