So, What do you guys think of my new build. A 7mm RSAUM & 338 Lapua Mag.

These will be prone rifles setup only. I have a place out in the desert that I can shoot out to 2000' yards and beyond.

The 7mm RSAUM for some F-class matches @ 1000' yards, but mainly for 1k to 1600 yards. The 338LM for 2000' yards and beyond.

I would like some input on my rifle builds.

Here are the specs.
McMillan A5 stocks and Krieger Barrels have been ordered.

7mm RSAUM:
Surgeon RSR-WSM repeater action.
Surgeon Detachable magazine Bottom metal.
McMillan A5 Desert Camo-KMW cheekpiece,spacer system.
Krieger 7mm-SS,5R, 1-9 TW, 1.25 straight, 28" finish length.
CG Etreme Mod 22 2-stage trigger.
No Muzzle Brake.
Ammo-180 Berger VLD or Sierra's new 180 SMK HPBT

338 Lapua Mag:
Surgeon 1581 XL repeater action.
Surgeon Detachable magazine Bottom metal.
McMillan A5 Sand Camo-KMW cheekpiece,spacer system.
Krieger 338-SS, 1-9.35 TW, 1.400" straight, 30" finish length.
CG Etreme Mod 22 2-stage trigger.
Muzzle Brake, Maybe???
Ammo-300 Berger VLD or Sierra 300 SMK HPBT

I have not decided on a scope yet, maybe a Nightforce Benchrest model 1/8 MOA or a March scope???

Thanks a lot!

Re: Extended Long Range Gun Build Plan

Put some taper in that 338 barrel or it's going to be muzzle heavy. Yes to a brake, why not is the question. Think through your scope/base selection. Pick a minimum zero range and maximum range and look at components that will work. Even then you maybe disappointed on one end or the other. Some NF and March scopes probably won't have the vertical adjustment range you need. The 7 RSAUM is a bit on the light side for 1.6K, good F-Class round but then it like falling off the edge of a table.

I was planning a similar built.... I looked in the Lapua sight and notice they did all their .338 testing with a 27.5" in barrel with 1:10 twist... Why did you go with the 30" barrel and 1-9 twist? Does it have to do with the bullet weight? 300?
All your info was very informative, especially the barrel specs... Thank you and good luck on your build....

I know these parts can take up to a year to get... Post some pics.

Re: Extended Long Range Gun Build Plan

on my 338 i went with a 26in and a 1 in 9.3 twist to get the best acc out of the 300 grs.

Definitely go with a March over the NF Benchrest. The NF will only have 40-50 MOA of total internal travel. If you're planning on going 2000yds+ that'll be an issue.

Just a thought.

Re: Extended Long Range Gun Build Plan

Dave, so for a 7mm you´d go i.e. with a 7 rm instead ?

Re: Extended Long Range Gun Build Plan

Sounds good mate. I went with a 30-338LM Imp build for my ELR rifle. How do the 7mm bullets go when transonic though? I nearly went for a 7mm RUM for my build but I like 30cal and was unsure about the 7mm transonic performance. Why not just go for a 338 only?

Re: Extended Long Range Gun Build Plan

The 338 at 3100fps 300gr OTM is hard to beat at extended ranges just look what Shawn is doing at 2750 yards

Re: Extended Long Range Gun Build Plan

Is Shawn getting 3100fps out of a 338 edge with 300gr?? That sounds very fast to me. I could be wrong, but I have a 30in barrel and I have only squeezed 2810 with a 30" barrel and 89.4gr of new H1000.

Re: Extended Long Range Gun Build Plan

For the 2,000yd and beyond, whiy didnt you choose to go with a .375 cartridge (375 SnipeTac, or CheyTac)? It would be alot better at 2000yds. Dont get me wrong I have 338 Lapua and love mine, If I had a way to shoot out to 2000yds anytime I want, I would go with a 375 CheyTac.

That is Shawns +P chambering that hes getting 3100fps not the standard edge.
