Re: Let's see your NV gear and kill pics

There are a couple of competing theories as to this. Both however are predicated on the fact that pigs eat the snakes, so...

1. It's a Behavioral adaptation. The Snakes have figured out not to rattle so as not to become prey to the ever enlarging Pig population.

2. It's an Evolutionary adaptation. About 10% of the Rattle Snake population normally doesn't rattle. Because of this, the ones that don't naturally rattle get to live to pass on their genes to their descendants. As such a larger portion of the Rattle Snake population is now not rattling...

Either way, scary and again I say, THAT'S A DAMN BIG SNAKE ! ! !

Re: Let's see your NV gear and kill pics

If my memory serves me correctly, the 4th shot from bills Glock .40 cal struck his head with no rattle prior to.

Re: Let's see your NV gear and kill pics

IPSC Guy, much true damn big snake. But not the biggest here. The biggest this year though.
I heard both the theories. I am in agreement with #2, thats its genetic and passed on. I do not believe it is a learned behavior at all. Have a number of reasons.
So far this year, 26 Copperheads, several in the field with the hogs, shot while looking for a down hog. Snake within 10 yards of where we shot the hog. 14 Cottonmouths and all were in the middle of hog country. And that was Rattler #16. Only two of the 16 buzzed us, and both buzzed us in the golf cart. Not while we were on foot. None of the snakes we got near on foot alerted or went into a defensive mode. One copperhead got defensive when the hog almost ran over him getting away from us.
The cottonmouths were not funny but struckthem selves where the bullet hit. The headless rattlesnakes still strike you the next day wherever you touch them. A dead snake CAN strike you..... The heads come off before they get moved. A shovel is a wonderful thing, long handle and sharp edge.

Thats 56 snakes and over 250 hogs. The hogs are not eating them too well. And when we try to talk them into eating the snakes they argue that the peanuts are better and make us shoot them...

And no, I have never been able to pick up a snake on thermal. UNLESS he/she just ate and the lump in them is still warm.
I can see them in the PVS14 when they contrast enough with the terrain, and thats been about half of the 56 dead this year.

Re: Let's see your NV gear and kill pics

Took a buddy hunting last night, it was his first pig hunt w/NV. Ended up being a great night for it. Temps dropped down to upper 60's but kind of dark being we had a late rising quarter moon. The wind helped a lot being it was from the south and we stalk from the North. I was hunting with my 12.5" suppressed 6.8, ACOG and PVS-24. I had him set up with a 12.5" suppressed 5.56, EOtech, PVS-14 and a 3x magnifier. Being he had my PVS-14 weapon mounted I had nothing helmet mounted which made it a little more challenging. We parked in the middle of the field and used the W-1000 for spotting. It was 1200 yds to the furthest point from where we were and the W-1000 rocked!!! The friend I took didn't want his pic up so I'll post the others. I almost forgot, 11 piggies got deleted.

Re: Let's see your NV gear and kill pics

Jason and I decided to do a little NV R&D last night!! We like to call them a "sales meeting". We feel that in order to sell the stuff for hunting you should at least hunt with it
grin.gif
. Got to the field around 22:30 and man was it dark with 0 moon. Of coarse our Ident Marking PVS-14's and ANVIS 9's looked great

All the pigs we got were 160-200lbs w/2 being boars. We only got shots on 5 but all are taking a permanent nap!!

What clip on do you have on your weapon?

You need to tell Jason to smile now and then. His pig probably died of fright!!

The Clip on looks to be a PVS24, but I'll let HD confirm.
As for Jason,I don't think he shows any emotion in pictures, they seem to go viral....

Hahaha. You're prob right sir. That is a PVS-24 in front of an ACOG

Wes, that is pure greatness. Haven't seen that pic in a while.

Quick question about this rig - that looks a PVS14 with magnifying lens behind the Eotech, right? What range would you say this is decently accurate to? I presume it also magnifies the reticle image of the Eotech, is that an issue? Trying to decide if I want a D740 vs a 14 behind my Eotech... I've lots of hogs but not so much cash. Thanks.

Re: Let's see your NV gear and kill pics

It is a PVS-14 w/3x magnifier. This has become our go to pig hunting rig because you can use the same PVS-14 on your helmet for navigating then w/our DLOC mount move it to the weapon extremely quick for shooting. I would say that range is great for 100 or less, even though we have killed a number of pigs with it out to 150. It's also light weight and you still have a day time rifle w/o changing optics. The 3x magnifier does increase the eotech's reticle to a 3 MOA dot.

Re: Let's see your NV gear and kill pics

Thanks for the answers. I'm still on the fence, but leaning more to the PVS14 side, since I already have a (NV compatible) Eotech, and the 14 is more versatile. A 14 would also be useful for doing other things in the dark than whacking hogs, like sneaking up on poachers, checking the yard for intruders and jealous ex-boyfriends, or finding my deer stand in the dark without turning on a flashlight.

Re: Let's see your NV gear and kill pics

I sure wish a PVs14 would work in front of an ACOG, i suppose if i were in the market i would take the pvs22 or similar first as i would prefer to use it in front of multiple systems. just a bit bulky to use as a hand held monocular...

Unfortunately it will not. 95% of the time using a 14 in front of an ACOG will cause severe POA/POI issues. A select few state it has worked for them, but very few. The PVS-22 like most qaulity clip-ons need at least 3.5x for a full FOV. Hope this helps. :)

Re: Let's see your NV gear and kill pics

So something like a 22 would not serve the purpose of a monocular either? Also no good in front of 0x optics such as aim point?

Wich one would u buy first 14 or 22?

You say 14+ACOG=zero shift? Is it constant if aligned on same position of rail and zero'd 14 in front of it? In a night only use fashion. Posibly count clicks from the difference of night vision assisted mode and day use mode...

Just want to get the most uses out of one since I can't afford both...

Since this is a pic thread, give me a PM or email. Be happy to assist with all your questions. We have done extensive testing with PVS-14's out front of ACOGS. Thanks :)

Re: Let's see your NV gear and kill pics

Guys use a laser zero to your optic even a red laser will work for this test , now add the pvs14 , clip on whatever "@&$. out front see where the laser and optic zero are now and you will know if the shift is repetable and how much the shift is or not ..Do this at your day optic zero range for mechanical offset to be the same each test .. I don't use a pvs14 out front of anything but the test will work for clip on bore shift test also ..

Re: Let's see your NV gear and kill pics

Took my friend Larry out for a test of my new can for the 223 on coyotes and hogs he is my TNVC dealer as well as my SOT dealer and I have to take him any time I want to use the can till the form 4 go’s through so I guess he gets guided hunts for the next 6 months
First stand called in this big female with pup distress and female whimpers, I spotted her in the thermal 400 yards out and she came right to the call cross wind across a plowed field, she started to circle down wind at 125 and hit the sent cone of Tony’s Predator confidence and stopped on a dime. Larry hit her with a 77gr SMK and she started to run and I put one more in her to stop her, ugly dog and Larry’s first
larryscoyote.jpg

About a mile further down the road we caught this hog in the open Larry took the first shot and I followed up with a few more as did he also, we walked out and put one more in the head with the pistol .We dragged the hog out of the field so the bones won’t puncher the farmers tires on his tractor, paced it off at 375 yards so far my farthest kill with the D760 at night and again Larry’s first hog

Re: Let's see your NV gear and kill pics

TNVC D-740, with Gen 3 Pinnacle auto-gated tube, and this time, 6.8 SBR 12.5" using the new Cutting Edge Raptor bullet.

I kill more stuff with this scope than I ever did with any other single optic....ever.

Nice kills guys ! We are finally going to take. Day off and go try some new equipment out on live targets not steel !! Hope to have some kill picks soon..

Re: Let's see your NV gear and kill pics

Thermal makes a world of difference!! Located this guy in grass and scrub brush taller than he was from 200 yards. Was able to stalk up to within 75 yards before dropping him with the 7.62x39

Re: Let's see your NV gear and kill pics

Finally caught up with this guy after he repeatedly tore up a protein feeder intended for deer. His downfall came at 2:00 AM couple weeks ago. Even with a 30 cal hole through both lungs he managed to run 100 yards. Opted not to track him through thick brush in the middle of the night. He ended up in a swampy area near a creek. Had to drag him out with the tractor the next morning.

Solothurn,

You sure have some ugly hogs in 'Bama. That next to last photo looks like a cross between a hog and a jackalope. No nose! I'm sure all the kids teased him in school. You did him a favor. A hog with a hare lip! LOL

A big thank you to TNVC for the PVS27,a great company to do business with. The PVS27 makes shots (490yards) in the dark of night very do-able. Even though i was actually hunting for hogs with 338LM, i couldn't turn down this fat raccoon. I'm sure he got his fill of my corn over several months

That is a damn nice blaster and shooting that small critter at that distance...woa...The 27 is just that good at extreme distances in the clarity and contrast dept. Those S&B scopes also pay dividends as well.

Re: Let's see your NV gear and kill pics

Hi Nostradumbass
I love your set up,I have the 3x magnifier eotech with the exps3 eotech nv also,my question is have you ever tried using your Pvs then the 3x magnifier ,then the eotech on the same rail for NV shooting.I am a rookie in the NV world.I do not have a helmet yet for hands free viewing, but will purchase the one like your down the road.
Thank you so much for the pics!!!!
