dillion vs hornady prog press

Been using a Lee single stage press for a while and ready to upgrade to a progressive press. Is there a consensus on the hornady lnl AP vs Dillon 550? The hornady is tempting with 500 free bullets but the selection isn't exactly what id want.

I have mostly lee and rcbs dies at the moment if they will only work in 1 vs the other.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have both
the LNL AP is good bit of kit
then again so is the Dillon
either will serve you well

I've had no issues with my LNL AP, and can't see any advantages that would have been provided by the more expensive Dillon.

I have had a Dillon 550B for years and just recently got a Hornady Lock N Load Ammo Plant. Got it set up fairly easily. I like the Lock N Load set up better than the 550B. It just seems more refined and more ease of use on the loader. I also like having the 5th station on the press so I can put in a Powder Cop so I don't get any double or missed powder charges.

Both are good units from good companies so you won't go wrong. Pick the one that suits your needs best.

Rob, what is the advantage of the ammo plant over the regular AP? I know it has the case feeder and auto primer.... Anything else? Is it worth the extra $700?

I guess what i was thinking was by getting the Regular AP for 375 I can always add on the parts to eventually match the ammo plant for not much more than the $1,100 ammo plant package...

Just gives you a bunch of extras like you mentioned. I dont have to exact list onhand but a quick web search will give you all the stuff that comes with both. You can always add anything later. I just wanted to get it done in one shot.

I've been running a Hornady LNL AP now for about 4 years for my 45 acp and don't regret it at all. One thing to keep in mind is the Dillon 550 is also not an auto progressive press you must rotate after each pull of the handle. In order to get a AP press from Dillon you have to step up to the 650 which is a bit more $$$ and the reason I chose the the Hornady originally, that and when I bought mine it was 1000 free bullets.

There is a false economy with the Hornady AP Press. The real crux of things is that to get it set up like a 650 you have to buy more parts to have powder thru expansion set like the dillon. A LNL AP is more like a 650 then comparing it to a 550. No matter how you bend it, there will be people happy with either brand.

THe 550 is most versatile of progressive presses. People who think they need a powder check, IMHO, are not paying attention when they are reloading. Reloading is for people who have the time and inclination to do it right. Cutting corners is not a good thing......

Running a powder cop is just being smart, adding a device that decreases possibility of mishap is cutting corners?

Talk about flawed logic

No it's called being safe with a progresive press pumping out high numbers of rounds. You can watch the powder check instead of having to look into each case. Just another fail safe. Not about paying less attention or cutting corners.

The Hornady comes with a case acticavted powder measure. It doesn't come with the caliber conversion like the Dillon. You do have to spend another $10 for an powder through expander like the one below for a 9mm and about $30 for a shellplate bringing cost up to about $440 for the unit.
