Apple pickers desperately needed..........

Re: Apple pickers desperately needed..........

Sounds to me that the options should be "picking apples" INSTEAD of unemployment benefits.

Re: Apple pickers desperately needed..........

It was a good year for Apples out here. My trees are loaded like I've never seen them before.

If I lived closee to an orchard, I would go and put in a few days a week for that kind of money.

I went to the Washington Apple Commission website and there was no way to find a job at an orchard near where I live. I think they could do a better job servicing their clients with a simple job locator service.

Re: Apple pickers desperately needed..........

I think if you perhaps changed the rules and made it clear that they would not loose their unemployment or other benefits, disability or medicaid etc if they did some temporary work, it might make a big difference.

As much as people like to talk about those on government benefits not wanting to work, a big part of it is that they are trapped and can't change without loosing everything, it is almost as if it is designed to keep people poor & not working.

If you are on government benefits and have some money coming in each week, have food stamps and have government healthcare for yourself and your family etc. Would it be smart from a survival standpoint to throw it all away for a temporary job which you know will end after a month or two and then you will be left with nothing coming in.

Thanks for that, I always enjoy hearing someone speak with common sense and a working brain. Listening to the usual blather mouthing BS sure gets old.

You would be amazed... Try getting someone with a will work for food sign to actually f-in WORK!!! I tried to hire every one of them I seen last year when working in north Dallas. Usually offer $12-$14/hr plus dinner/lunch and not a single taker out of at least 20.

I would say it is probably easier to sit at home doing nothing for $377/week than getting out there and making more by doing something.

Ditto. I once ran an ad in a DFW suburb for $16/hr when Congress hadn't re-issued unemployment benefits- I kid you not over 500 responses. Two days later & congress re-ups unemployment benefits - not a single person willing to come for interview let alone consider the position. We (they) have created a welfare state.
