What fps are y'all getting from 250 and 300gr bullets?

I shoot nosler accubond 250's and bored at work so playing around with my ballistic calculator...

I plugged in 2900 fps for both rounds ( 250 vs 300) just to keep it the same and surprised at the results.

The 250 gr has a BC of 0.575, BUT the 300 gr has a BC of 0.720!

11.3 in less drop at 800yds and 33in less drop at 1000.

If this is even remotely close and you CAN get the fps of a 300 close to the 250...I bellieve I'll be switching to thre 300gr

Re: .338 LM fps

I *believe* the whole concept of the 338LM was the 250@2950+, and I think the CIP loadings with the Lockbase bullet achieves that.

However, you're not going to see that with a 300.

My TRG42 gets 2660 from a 300 without pushing too hard, but it's not a light load either. I know I've seen where people around here are getting 2750(ish) from their 338's. I've gotta imagine they either have long barrels or are really, really hot on charges.

My buddy's 30" barrel 338 is getting 2800 from the 300gr.

Re: .338 LM fps

I've always tried to duplicate Lapua factory performance with both scenar and Lock-Base. I agree 100% with turbo54.

It's just the nature of reloading just to see how far you can push a load. 250's are packing alot of energy out past 1500 yards.

My AIAW has a 27in 1/11 as well as a 28in 1/9,but I had a 30 inch Mike Rock 1/9.3 GAP chambered for my AR30 and I was getting 2775 with 89grains of RL25. Another 150fps created high pressure and terrible SD.

Now I shoot 95gr. Retumbo under a Lock base or scenar and learn to read the wind instead of spending time making faster loads.

Re: .338 LM fps

2810fps with 300's out of mine, 30" barrel and N570. A bit on the hot side but that's where the accuracy node is. Am going to have a play with the 250 scenars soon.

Re: .338 LM fps

I have my 300gr Bergers going around 2810 from my 338. The load doesn't seem too hot either.. But I hear with retumbo pressure builds extremely quick, so I might be close without knowing.

Re: .338 LM fps

I get 2750 out of 26" barrel with 300gr scenars using 91.0 g h1000

Re: .338 LM fps

Thanks guys, I guess I'll work up a load with the noslers in 250gr, and the match bullets for the 300gr to cut down on price

I tested the following (supposedly) OBT loads out of a 26":
250gr Scenars over 96gr H1000 clocked 2930fps.
300gr Berger Hybrids over 92gr H1000 clocked 2800fps!

What twist rate does your barrel have? Also I take.it that you were not showing and pressure signs? Thanks in advance.

Re: .338 LM fps

Correct, no pressure signs. Barrel is 1:10 twist.

Both loads were in new Norma brass with 114gr water capacity.

250gr Scenars were seated to 3.75" COAL.
300gr Bergers were seated to 3.90" COAL.

Re: .338 LM fps

I am getting 2950 fps with the 250 gr Lapua Scenars, Lapua brass, Federal 215m primers and H4831SC with an AI AWSM. Very accurate load with no pressure signs.

Re: .338 LM fps

I use 90.0 gr of 4831sc and a 250gr. Scenar in Lapua brass (Max load according to Sierra). My last chrono on this load gave me 3015 fps average and an 11.9 sd from a 10 round string.

Rifle is a TRG-42, 27 inch barrel 1-10 twist. No pressure signs. VERY accurate load.
