Hi,

yesterday I checked the speed of my new 30-06 Longerange load. A little bit slow.
Caliber:30-06
Barrel: 27 inch Lothar Walter match barrel (normally very fast)
Twist: 10
Bullet: 208 HPBT
Brass: FL Winchester
Primer: Fed. 210
COAL: 3,350, ,002 to the lands
Powder: RL22
57gr. 2545 fps
58gr. 2597 fps
59gr. 2653 fps

Please can you share your speed measurements. Is this a slow lot of RL22?

Re: 30-06, 208 Hornady HPBT with RL22

I would think you should be able to make about 2800 fps at safe pressure with 208s/RL22/27" bbl.

I'm shooting moly'd 208 AMax in Win brass. 61gr RL22 gives 2720 fps in 22.5" Douglas bbl. Same load gave 2810 fps from same barrel at 26.5", before I had it cut/braked. My barrel has some mileage on it, and a new barrel/throat may likely show pressure signs at 61gr RL22.

My load is not referenced in any manual I know of, I worked it up myself and have shot a few thousand through my rifle. It's not hard on the brass. Safe in my rifle, but always start low, and listen to what your rifle/brass are telling you.

Re: 30-06, 208 Hornady HPBT with RL22

Its not much help but I was able to get them close to 3100fps in my 300WM and that is where I started getting pressure signs. So it would seem you have a little room to go

Re: 30-06, 208 Hornady HPBT with RL22

What temp did you shoot them in?

My 26" load is below with 2 different ammo temps. This is why I've mostly dropped RL22 from the 30-06 and have been using H4831sc instead.

3.410 OAL
Win brass
208 Amax (non-moly)
CCI 200 primer
59.5gr RL-22
30F Temp = 2710fps
85F Temp = 2800fps

This is where the load liked to shoot, I had it as high as 60.5gr before seeing pressure signs in my rifle.

Hi Bohem,
57F temp.
Next I use necksized Norma brass with 60gr.-61gr. RL22. But I thing there is no big difference.
No happyend with RL22 !?
My other load is a 200SMK with 52gr. N550 (2679 fps).
This is a mild load.

What chrony are you using??? What kind of light conditions? I had a f1 chrony that would read slower in low light conditions and faster in bright sunlight...

At first glance it does seem a little slow.. I'd verify the chrony and shoot over another one if you can and maybe try another powder... I'm with bohem though, I prefer h4350 or h4831sc over the rl22... Especially up in AK if you plan on shooting year round...

Re: 30-06, 208 Hornady HPBT with RL22

Hi,

here are some information above the A-Max and the HPBT:
208gr.A-Max:1,340 inch
208gr. HPBT: 1,517 inch

Was playing with Quickload
Both loads 3.350 inch.
My load with the 208gr. HPBT and 59gr. RL22 has 57593 psi.
With the 208gr. A-Max you can use 61,1gr. RL22 to produce the same pressure of 57593 psi.
For a 30-06 longrange load the A-Max is the better choice. Faster and a better bc.

Hi MontanaMarine,

do you use a drop tube for the 61gr. RL22?

I have been bouncing back and forth with 185 vld or 208 amax. I have shot both in my rifle but I think I'm going to go with the 208 amax. I use the rifle for LR shooting. Looks like RL-22 works well with the 208 amax, I have tried Ramshot hunter and works well. I do have to run it hard to shoot well, and this has been hard on brass. Seems like RL-22 from 58-59.5 grs. works best. I'll have to try it and see.
