Last night i read an article from Feb 1976 handloader magazine about reworking an old m77 trigger and decided that the factory trigger on my Ruger m77 needed some tlc. I pulled the trigger assembly and made merry with a polishing stone on the trigger and sear. I took a great deal of time polishing it in an attempt to not round it off. I also milled down the overtravel adjustment screw that way it would actually do what it was intended for. Lastly i cut about half a coil out of the trigger spring. After doing all that i couldnt be happier with the way the trigger feels (minimal creep and almost no overtravel and im just guessing here but i believe its breaking at 2.5-3 ibs). Now for my question, have i made a dangerous rifle? I have tested the safety and the trigger will not release no matter how much pressure you place on it. With the safety off i have smaked the stock, the mag well, and rapidly worked the action with no problems from the trigger. Is there any other tests i should try before taking this rifle to the woods?

Those are the basic tests. That said, never rely on the safety to excuse poor gun handling. Never point the gun at anything you don't wish to be destroyed.

I think there out to be a law against safety switches. Thousands of people have been killed by guns that were either on "safe" or unloaded.

well said. I appreciate the response. But i have to say that i am a big fan of safeties. One main reason for that is they're are many irresponsible people roaming the woods this time of year, and any extra step needed to fire a round at the intended target is fine by me. Yet on a self defense weapon the one time you really need it there couldn't be few enough steps. But your right it all goes back to that little adage we learned in hunters safety.

If your rifle has a soft recoil pad I've also forcefully slammed the but end of the rifle on the ground to see if I could get the gun to fire. Don't know if this is standard procedure but I did notice that I could get gun to fire when the trigger was set too low, and once backed off a tad, it stopped.

Just tried it and still no problems. I feel comfortable with it now, gonna check zero and then im headed to the woods.

new Issue... if pressure is applied to the trigger while on safety the gun will not fire. yet the moment the safety is released after pressure is applied the firing pin is released. Luckily i discovered this just before checking zero, and I adjusted the sear engagement to fix the problem. By doing so i have done away with the nice light trigger i had before, any suggestions on fixing this new issue? And yes i realize that i probably should have left this job to a pro, or just droped in a timney...
