Kinda minor vent and a warning for this time of the year.

Always thought to be very tech saavy and diligent with internet security. Just had a bit of fraud yesterday, as someone charged their Starbucks card, or purchased a card with my paypal, bill me later account. The good thing is I have paypal set up to email me every transaction so I picked up on it rather quickly.

With the whole Starbucks mobile app you can charge and reload a card with a smartphone, or on the net, it is the perfect way to launder stolen funds.

Paypal refunded my money, just want to warn the fellow hiders to turn on purchase alerts and monitor for unauthorized Starbucks transactions.

I have not heard back from Starbucks as to where the transaction originated or any of the other details.

Fuck Starbucks!

Fuck Starbucks because of something done by Paypal? Or fuck Starbuck's because they haven't gotten a hold of you?

Re: Starbucks Fraud

Yeah this sounds like credit card fraud... not Starbucks fraud lol

Just had some retard try to buy over $6000 worth of crap at walmart.com with my card. Bank said "Oh hell no!" and sent me a new card. I'm not blaming Wal Mart lol

,,,, for those why may have missed it the first time.

Re: Starbucks Fraud

No I know its not Starbuck fault, its just some bad guy, plus a slip in my interweb diligence. Starbucks has, however, created a monster allows for easy fraud and money laundering.

The thread is more of an information alert, but of course I am frustrated and had to point the soap box somewhere.

I created the thread inform others to be on the lookout for this kind of scam. Anyone can buy a card at a kiosk, then make a bogus account, hack some paypal accounts, buy more cards then sell them.

If someone drinks a lot of coffee at SB, they may not notice the transactions.

Re: Starbucks Fraud

Starbucks also takes stolen cash, stolen debit or credit cards, stolen gift cards, etc., as does almost everyone else. Especially if you have a signature, pin number, or other security measure along with the stolen value.

In this case, someone had your Paypal password to charge value to your Paypal account. Hardly any fault of Starbucks...

You need to actually research rather than blaming Starbucks for creating "a monster" that in fact was not created by them. Just because they accept something as a form of payment does NOT make them responsible. Much like the bullshit email that's always getting circulated claiming they don't support the military. It's fine to be angry and want to rant, but I'm sure you can do so without spreading fictional hype man. I'm not trying to be a dick, but my wife works for Starbuck's and if I had a dollar for all the bullshit people try to blame them for I'd be rich...

The thread should be titled Fraud via Paypal...

Re: Starbucks Fraud

Why would you keep money in your anti-gun paypal account anyway? So they can make interest off it? Fuck paypal is how that post should have ended

I presume because they can't be bothered to get back to the guy about who was stealing his credit card, you would be pissed too if you were in his shoes.

Asking for clarification is not a criticism of his reaction. Making sure his frustration is pointed in the right direction is far from the norm....

Re: Starbucks Fraud

They will not get back to you, no business i know of will. If they tell you who the guy is, maybe you go beat the $@!#$ out of him like he deserves, and then he sues them. They get to pay lawyer fees even if they win.

File a police report, the police can ask for the records, but good luck with that.

First, it's a Holiday Weekend. And Second, get back to him with what? They won't release video footage to a customer and for good reason. You're asking a business with large amounts of cash to show you their security footage which outlines all angles of security and puts employees at risk. Unless you're a LEO in an official investigation or an Officer of the Court with a court subpena then you're not entitled to anything. He's got nothing to be pissed about other than someone stealing his shit. If he wants someone to review the footage then he should contact local LE which is what most people with any common sense would do.

Re: Fraud via Starbucks

Ummmm, why is there a crusade to blame a corporation, Paypal or Starbucks, yet no one is calling it as it is? To the OP, you are a victim. However, you have not been victimized by any company. It was a person. A human being that posesses the ability to gain access to your info, take advantage of security gaps, and take something that is not theirs. Sure, this is a tremendous overstatement of the obvious, and yes, I get it that you are frustrated, but really? Your gonna try to find fault where there is not fault to be found? In this day and age of identity theft and other cyber crimes, you need to be willing to accept that not everyone has the security to fend off all e-crimes, and realize the risk. If you dont want the risk, stop putting your info out there.

Yesterday I come home to find out some shit-heal on a dirt-bike decided to play baseball with my mailbox. After reading this post, I guess fault lies on the bat maker for making it so easy for someone to get a destructive implement, or the maker of my mailbox for not making it strong enough to take a beating.

Its one thing to vent, but dude, come on. Direct it to where it needs to be.

+1 on this.

Re: Fraud via Starbucks

I understand it is not Starbucks' fault, I was frustrated that it was so easy to pull this scam, and they still have not gotten back with me.

I am not so dense not to realize the human factor in this incident. I do not patronize SB as it is, expensive coffee and all of the instant gratification crap they sell, but that is besides the point.

The cool thing is Paypal has already refunded my loss, and is still investigating. Starbucks has not replied to them as well.

The funny thing is that when someone purchased the gift cards with my account, there was a $5 bonus promotion. So I got my full refund and an extra $5 from paypal.
