Rem 700 Varmint @ Dicks for $350 on Black Friday

Re: Rem 700 Varmint @ Dicks for $350 on Black Friday

How is that any different than a good shooter winning 6 guns in a match and transferring them. You think would intend on keeping all of them.

Do you and NB really think it should be called a felony to do what he did? Think about it carefully.

Obtaining six guns is not a felony.

Making a few dollars on resale is NOT what this shitstorm is about.

Is it "fair" to use Sniper's Hide as his marketing arm, while not being a paid site vendor, or ffl?

There's no right way to do the wrong thing.

Do you really think that using this forum to violate federal law isn't a problem? Go learn the laws pertaining to "Engaging in the Business" and the sections on dealing without a FFL and his "packages" that he was offering could very easily fall into the manufacturing without a FFL part of those laws.

He bought those six, heavily discounted rifles with his only intention being to resell them for profit. He bragged about what he was going to do before, during and after he did it. He even jacked the prices up way higher than normal prices as well. On top of that he even bragged about using alternate addresses to beat the limitations set forth by the company offering the rebates which if done on a much broader scale means that these companies will no longer offer these kinds of deals in the future (see what happened with retailers after that "Extreme Couponing" show hit the air).

We didn't make up a law and claim what he's doing is a felony. The law is there and has been there and it is obvious that what he's doing IS indeed a felony.

Your winning six guns in a match hypothetical doesn't apply in this context so it's not worth addressing. The issue is also not a hypothetical. It's about the blatant and illegal actions of Top Predator and his attempted price gouging of the members of this site.

The ATF doesn't exist to charge every private individual who slips-up and makes a colorable case against himself. I have seen people who have sold too many guns in too short a time simply get a warning, a cease and desist letter and an application for an FFL. It's a very human system and so it often depends on who is making the inquiry and how the referral got to them.

Now, the guy a few years ago who chopped his barrel and his stock, then posted pictures of what was clearly an irreversable NFA violation - that's another story entirely.

Re: Rem 700 Varmint @ Dicks for $350 on Black Friday

here is my take on it, he isn't making a dime on the guns, he is getting paid for going out at 12 a.m. and waiting in the damn lines and fighting with all of the crazies who are out shopping at that time of night.

He was originally trying to charge $200 more than he paid for them. Doing so after talking this deal up and down for the past two weeks, and without becoming a commercial vendor on the forum, is in rather poor taste. It's also the sort of behavior that will cause retail stores to put purchase limits in place on future sales.

Re: Rem 700 Varmint @ Dicks for $350 on Black Friday

I don't know where a Dick's Sporting Goods is, but it's not anywhere near me. The concept of buying a few items on sale and offering them to those who would not otherwise have access to them is worth a bit of profit. Talking it up and gaming the system isn't the right way to go about it, agreed. However, anybody that is posting anything similar in the sale section is getting hassled, now. It's a bit silly. We get it, some of us are walking legal references and can opine indefinitely on ethics and fine points. In my studied opinion, firearms shouldn't be regulated, as that poses an infringement on my right to them....so why are some of us so enthusiastically eating our own? If you think he might be in violation of a forum rule or federal law, treat him the way you would want to be treated and send him a PM, don't treat it like a party. Who's side are we on?

The hypothetical I mention was aimed at Turbos comment but since you like links, try this one.

http://www.atf.gov/forms/download/atf-f-5310-12.pdf

Ask yourself if what he did constitutes him needing a FFL or if he could even get approved to have one?

Buying six guns and selling them doesn't make it a business or him a felon. If he did that multiple times for a year, you can bet the ATF would find him and require him to comply.

They don't just give them out to every person that wants one or thinks they need one. That's why there is an application with an approval process.

wow alot of arm chair bitch slappers here, why not leave the slapping to the moderators or low light. I don't see anything wrong with a guy trying to make a few bucks off flipping a few rifles, big freaking deal, yeah its probably illegal but why the cock blocking of a guy trying to make a buck?? with any profits you know the guy is probably just wanting to buy that nightforce or some other gun he really wants with the profits. I do things like this all the time particularly with optics if I can make some money it means I just reinvest in more gear with the profits.

case in point a few years back cameraland was blowing out the last of the regular geovids for $1399 I think it was. I already had some but they were demos with only a 1 year warranty, so I sold those locally for $1650 and kept the new ones with a fresh 5 year warranty on them. I guess that makes me evil and wrong for keeping the extra $250?? I later ended up selling these for a set of demo geovid HD's I sold them for $1850 locally, so at the end of the day I am into a brand new set of HD geovids for $1399. some people don't like paying through the nose for new stuff and buying it right means I can trade out of it and upgrade when I want. goodness why the haters for that??????

By the way, I am offering 400.00 for your beat up 22-250 with the scope.
Thanks, please let me know if you accept my offer.

How about I trade you straight up for your SAC since I shoot it better anyway?

Re: Rem 700 Varmint @ Dicks for $350 on Black Friday

I grabbed one in .308 a few week before the sale. I'll be getting a $50 Dicks gift card and a $50 rebate check. I registered for their rewards program and received 10% off...could have applied for their credit card and received an additional 10% off but didn't want a credit card. Final cost after taxes rebates etc will be $424. Still waiting on the rebate and gift card. I figure I can sell off the stock the scope and X mark pro trigger for around $150 combined. All in all not bad deal

That's probably why Dicks offered a guarantee that if the Black Friday sale rifles were lower in price I could come back and they would refund me the difference.

Re: Rem 700 Varmint @ Dicks for $350 on Black Friday

Regarding the $100 rebate, I noticed in the fine print the receipt has to have a time stamp of between 12am and 2am or something like that.... I wasn't able to pay for mine until 9am the next morning.

HOpe that doesn't hold things up.

I picked up a 223. Figured it would be a cheap bolt gun to practice positional shooting with, but mainly wanted a cheap Rem700 action for a future build

There's a little bit of a difference shitstain between geovids and rifles.

Re: Rem 700 Varmint @ Dicks for $350 on Black Friday

For those of you who didn't see this post in the "Why is it?" thread in The Bear Pit and for some reason are trying to keep this going:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Lowlight</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Jon,

It's very simple what he did was illegal. Just like Veer said, you cannot buy "firearms" like that for the sole purpose of reselling them for profit without having an FFL.

If he bought them, and trickled them out over time, he could have slipped through the cracks, but he didn't, he showed them all off and thus demonstrated bad judgement.

People don't seem to get it, there is a line, and websites like this with classified ads get a certain amount of attention. Every agency you can think of patrols this site, some with the intention of grabbing low hanging fruit, you guys who post illegal stuff. A great example is military tech, we have an ICE agent who just loves to ask for IPs and contact info so they can chase down guys selling stuff they shouldn't be. I can tell you the ATF also has accounts on here.

So would you rather I, or we as a community should look the other way and risk it all, or would you rather we police ourselves and catch it early?

By shutting down the thread and banning him, just for a bit, we show we are pro active and prevented a member from breaking the law.

It sucks but I make no bones, when Law Enforcement comes knocking, and they do, I will turn in each and every one of you before I risk this place. This is my only job, no way I am risking it for a single member because it might bend a nose. I will turn you over to any agency who asks and they don't have to ask twice, that includes, and believe me I have, copying every post you ever made on here.

Clear? </div></div>

Because if we had a white Friday the numbers from the ink wouldn't show up in the ledgers of the businesses selling goods during the holiday season.

The term "Black Friday" has nothing to do with race. It's a reference to businesses "going in the black," or showing a profit. Negative numbers, indicating a loss, are traditionally written in red ink, and it isn't for many retailers that this black ink makes an appearance until after Thanksgiving.

But if you'd like to have your very own "White Friday," please, by all means, go ahead and get down with your bad self.

Re: Rem 700 Varmint @ Dicks for $350 on Black Friday

I bought one of these in .308 in early November for $460, which was a good deal at the time. It shoots under .75 moa with factory ammo. Since I bought it to hunt with the only thing I'm going to change is having the barrel cut and crowned to 22".

For $360 or whatever the price was on BF, these rifles are a steal!

Re: Rem 700 Varmint @ Dicks for $350 on Black Friday

I am still waiting to shoot mine. I mounted and bedded the Weaver base but ordered the wrong scope rings so hopefully Midway has them to me by the end of the week. I have my trigger adjusted down to 2 1/2 lbs. right now which feels very nice for a factory trigger. This will be my first foray in to long range with a bolt gun so I am very excited to get in for such a cheap price!!

Re: Rem 700 Varmint @ Dicks for $350 on Black Friday

Ahem..

Getting back to the cheap-o's (like me) who just bought one (in .308) of these to shoot...It was $350...(assuming a I get the $100 rebate before the end of the world on 12/12/12.)

I got a $60 used Hogue tactical stock to try and inlet for one of "Stocky stocks" M5 DBM...$210 with AICS mag.

If my "bubba gunsmith" skillz seem to be still working, I plan on getting a Boyds laminated wood thumbhole varmint stock for $100.and sell the original ADL stock to EBAY.
Boyds seem to be the only one with a wood varmint barrel BDL in stock anywhere. (a floated, pillared, bedded wood stock has GOT to be as accurate as a B&C, Manners, Tactical whoever plastic stock!!!) (citation needed)

Plus, this thing as it sits is "barrel heavy"...some more weight in the butt CAN be a good thing...Beyonce comes to mind...

OK... the scope is a throw away, or Ebay...

The trigger (and this just is me..I shoot Milsurp) is GTG...for now.

What about glass? what makes sense for a rifle like this?
(suggestion box is open) I would like a mil-dot but can't get my head (or wallet) around spending much more than $300
on this rig...

So, as of now I've got like $550 in a new 700 DBM rifle, another $100 for a wood stock, and I bet I get repeatable accuracy of...Oh wait I don't bet...pretty good... even with the POS glass...untill it breaks.

Works for me..(I hope, and pray, and tithe.)

What scope should I get?

looking forward...

Re: Rem 700 Varmint @ Dicks for $350 on Black Friday

1. i do appologize to whomever i have “offended” with this, including the administration of the site and LL. the temp ban was the ruling, if that was the judgement, i accept it and not going to whine or try to repeal it in any fashion, or express any contempt for the site, LL, or the moderators. it is what it is and i understand their point of view, and i genuinely did not want to promote generating any “heat” toward the site. if i was shot a PM, email, or anything i would have deleted that post immediately, not to revisit it at all.

2. thanks to those that looked at this as no different than any other for sale NIB post for selling something, it’s exactly what is with no “sneaking around” of putting them up one at a time every couple of weeks or months. See #4, that may be viewed as more illegal than the all in thing I did.

3. perhaps it did take some stones for me to post them all up at 1 time, but further proving that i had no intention of sneaking around, which would be IMO more dishonorable – i hid nothing, how many of you guys are that up front in such a way? if NOT sneaking around makes one a weasel or so delicately put by many a “douchebag”, then so be it.

besides, how the hell am I screwing anyone? Do any of you think you have to buy one? putting up the rifles in the very same thread that depicts how much you can get one of the rifles from Dick’s...yeah that’s really trying to hide that I’m trying to screw you, and the “mint” i’m making on them.
by the way, do any of you know that i am an FFL basically negating the whole controversy before you cried wolf to? .....think about it.

4. well I’m not an FFL. I called the ATF myself to check the legality of doing this - and this is no way a "how to" - but for you “arm chair” ATF officers: The several persons I talked to undoubtedly agreed that this is a ONE TIME DEAL, NOT REPEATATIVE, NOT PART OF A CONTINUEING ACTION ON MY PART TO DEAL IN THE FIREARMS TRADE. Obviously, I was making a profit of some sort, and asked about that, ANSWER: IT IS NOT PART OF A REPEATATIVE ACTIVITY OR LIVELYHOOD. They further said the if it’s found by them that I or anyone does this in a repeatative manner, there will be consequences at that point. But (as written AND quoted by some of you the very same part of the statute) this is an occasional sale. Nothing continual, repeatative, of “engaged in the business of” as part of my livelyhood.

- I’m not gloating or anything here, nor teasing / taunting the real ATF guys that ARE monitoring the site for all the other stuff that gets posted here, nor am i mocking the law. I’m not trying to take advantage of a loophole or get around any laws or anything like that, just putting together a .243 for myself from the sale of the other rifles. If anything, enhancing my own personal collection, again like the real ATF folks on the phone told me is ok to do. likewise if they told me to cease and desist because it is felonous, everything would be pulled everywhere and their will would be done. nothing felonous going on here.

also intra state sales – yes you can ship a rifle to someone’s door if you wish, transportation of the package is ok if you notify the carrier or USPS what’s in the package withoug marking what’s in the package. i was asking for a photo through an email or PM, a copy of a driver’s license to match it up to and get the OLN / address off of it to keep as a record of where the rifle went to, and a bill of sale / receipt for an intra state sale, which is above and beyond what the law requires me to do. for some reason, folks are too cheap to pay the $5 fee for an actuall FFL transfer.

RADcustom nailed on the head with his post, thanks for pointing out what many others seemed to have skipped over...almost word for word what the ATF told me.

so i did due deligence on my part, actually raising my own red flag against myself if there was actually one to raise with the ATF.

How many of you guys actually checked before you fed on my carcass or given your “professional” advice to anyone else?

5. Let’s talk about those proceeds and how I supposedly “pooped” on other members...

I stood for 2 hours outside of dick’s. 28 degrees F on a holiday rather than spending it with my wife. And bushed from a day of being at the in laws for the holidays. Risked $2,600 in savings to purchase rifles with no guarrantee of a sale. By the time I weeded through the rebate BS that no one seemed to know clearly about, made the purchase and got out of there and home, it was 3:30 am. Got a call at 0900 to pick them up, another trip to a very congested mall area on black Friday, with barely any sleep and on a day I traditionally reserve to spend by going hunting with my other family members. –not whining or looking for some sort of sympathy or anything like that, but there was some personal inconvienance to obtain the rifles, no doubt about that.

so did i poop on other people? where you guys at midnight? pissed you may have missed out? too bad, should have been there instead of bed. so i stood in line, did the paperwork, made 2 trips through Black Friday traffic, blew off my usual holiday routines with family and friends, was a walking dead for lack of sleep for 2 days, nervous about not getting the rebates due to illegible forms and committing $2,600...and asking for something in return on a resale for all of that makes me a duoche as commented earlier.

6. to address the “fleecing” of members– take a look at prices at outlets of off the shelf regular priced rem 700 varmints...the lowest is walmart at 617.00 through the special order catalog. The 549.99 at dick’s isn’t the regular price, check it after christmas. Mine were posted at 550.00, no sales tax for you to pay either. Do the math. Sure I made something off of it for my troubles, but also presented a deal to those that didn’t want to go the extra effort to get 1 or 2 rifles on black Friday. i got a deal, and so did anyone else at 550.00 that didn't want to stand in line.

how many of you that were interested are going to try to haggle? probably everyone of you if you were interested, and @ 550.00 would give some room to play the haggle game with you.

7. let’s address the “options package “...i actually was going to build a Howa, using the very same things in the options package. i did the homework on the bolt on items to find the best prices, including shipping. again, anyone interested in doing the same type of basic / beginner budget build, I already did the homework on the best deals out there, and offered to piece them together or send separate for you to assemble yourself. then when the remington deal came along, i switched from the howa to the rem action. either way, do the math...not making much of anything on those “options packages”, intent was to actually help out a few people that wanted to go that route and NOT rape ‘em. plus I enjoy tinkering and those bolt on items are not really all that hard to do within an hour or two if you’ve done them before. Ask your gunsmith what he’ll charge to do that for a person that doesn’t feel confident enough to do it themselves. plus you guys always bitch about the repeatative post of newbies wanting to know “what rifle, what accesssories for a budget build” type posts, there it is laid out for you and a few oppurtunities to get their hand on one, still at a lower price than if they did it themselves and much lower and quicker than if they sent it to a smith. am i that much of a douchebag now?

remember #4 above? The same applies for the gunsmith stuff you guys put out there. it’s not a repeatative, continual, engaging in the business of doing such things for my livelyhood.

8. for the “Profile” guys – yeah, “FEDERAL EMPLOYEE” – how many of you guys get a check from uncle sam other than social security .....any DOD folks out there? any Nat. guard / reserve folks out there? Any national park security guards out there? any postal service janitors out there? any guys getting a pension from the good ol’ USA (thanks by the way for your service)? Yes you are federal employees or were at one time too. from soldiers to floorsweepers, your federal emplyees. sorry I didn’t put pencil pushing bean counter in my profile, there’s the big secret of what I do to pay the bills – very glamorous, but it sounds a heck of a lot better using federal employuee, eh? That is a whole lot better than “yeti hunter” “zombie killer” and all the other real occupations listed now isn’t it? yeah the profile isn’t worth 2 cents, what’s with the “profile patrol”...this is the internet, the land of make believe, if you think a profile is of something valuable, grow up.

oh yeah, by the way, am i going to jeopardize my cushey pencil pushing federal job for a couple of hundred bucks by doing something illegal? really? if i had one suspicion that would happen, i would not even dream of doing anything of the sort. especially a federal offense no matter how small or how big. especially something concerning firearms.

9. the mail fraud stuff – yeah first thought was alternate address for more rebates...that was stupid, and i was running on over 24hours with no sleep and whooped tired at that time....that was a stupid post by me i admit it....only submitting the ceiling of 4 rebates – again not risking my cushey bean counting job for $200.00 by falsifying rebate forms and committing mail fraud. after some sleep and a clearer head it just was stupid. the intent of that post was actually to point out the rebate website and how unclear the forms where at Dick’s for anyone that was going to try throughout the rest of the day. with all the barcodes, receipts, upc info, credit card info, all in the their computer, they’ll probably catch you doing something like that by crosschecking data, if they actually take it that far. if not putting you on mail fraud charges, by withdrawing the rest of your rebates, or both. my bad on that one, again not wanting to jeopardize my cushey pencil pushing job.

and if you are indeed running the numbers, that’s 400.00 worth of rebates on 6 rifles, not 6 rebates. after seeing how nice they actually were, i attempted to sell only 5, keep 1 putting whatever i made on the 5 into the 1 i kept for a foundation for competition use. even if I did sell 5 at a full 550.00 (not likely) and keep 1, total gain would be a mere $540, only to be eaten up by the very same “options package” applied to the rifle I kept, leaving no monetary capital gain on the sales.

again - no felony, no mail fraud, no screwing any members out of anything, no big "windfall" on the rifles.

lessons learned, i’ve deleted those previous posts, which i would have in the first place if i knew it would lead to such a controversy. But at least it showed me a little of how the pack mentality works through some of the comments made throughout the thread.

so if that makes me a douchebag, so be it, i'm a douchebag.

but i guess that also makes those that took tasteless sucker punch cheap shots at someone that couldn't defend themselves at the time....cowards - by definition. i'll take a douchebag over a coward any day.

so i deleted whatever i could here, it's LL's house and i'm going to shit in it nor was it ever my intention to that in the first place. whether anynon thinks it's bannable or not, that's not the debate, it's up to the admin, it's their rules that we must abide by, there is no use to deny that or whining about it.

though unfortunately, my posts remain in your "quotes posts" though i did try to delete them.

i'm sorry for the inconvienance to LL and his team and have to listen or waste their time messing around with something that i did that caused such a stir.

Re: Rem 700 Varmint @ Dicks for $350 on Black Friday

Said the wife upon reading your "appology," TP, "Dude, like, <span style="font-style: italic">move on?</span>"

Some of us made a reasonable assumption that you're not based on your post on page one (second quote). Glad nothing came of it other than a temp ban.

Re: Rem 700 Varmint @ Dicks for $350 on Black Friday

TP,
Good to have you back. Some of your brethren had you already getting butt fucked in Leavenworth.
Glad to know otherwise!

Re: Rem 700 Varmint @ Dicks for $350 on Black Friday

@justingbaker

I think you can go here instead:
http://www.dsg.rebateaccess.com/

And file the rebate online instead of mailing it in. You can also call them - they are actually pretty helpful.

The fact that you felt the need to "defend" yourself with a post that could be mistaken for a novel, pretty much confirms what most people here thought of you.

For what it's worth, this is how the cheapie Dick's specials will shoot . . .

Shorter TOP PREDATOR - I apologize to anyone I may have offended. And to those who were offended, you are cowards who take cheap sucker punches.
