Do any of your firearms have a decocker?

Ever actually used it with a loaded cartridge?

If YES and NO, then you need to test them!

I did my typical decocker safety check and found my first ever defective decocker.

Got a definitely noticeable strike, highly likely to crush a primer, not just a small dimple.

Whaduya think?

I use it on my M9 all the time, never a problem with the rotating striker design and never even a light ding on the primer. Never tried your test in particular with my Sig 229, but with the two stage decock I would expect it to work ok on there.

Re: Do any of your guns have a decocker? Check this!

Good demonstration of a way to test your gun but you would/should be testing it on the range anyways. I have used the decocker on multiple M9s, P229s, P226s, P239s and a USP, probably total of 10 different guns, never had an issue. Maybe a reason to make sure you are decocking before holstering, but you should do that anyways.

For you more gun savvy folks, any chance when the firing pin block engages it is pushing slightly on the firing pin? If I had a gun doing what the SW99 is doing in the video I woulduse the decocker on the range and then check to see if I had any primer dimpling.

Expecting a safety to work is anal?

I guess us butthurt folk need to learn to grow up and use our rusty broken tools whether they work right or not huh?

In IPSC the guns that have a decocker in production class need to use it during "load and make ready". Never seen of heard of one going off.

Re: Do any of your guns have a decocker? Check this!

I have two H&Ks with decockers and am wondering how much primer protrusion would be too much? I'm confident the decockers are fine when the primer is properly seated, but what about poor primer seating?

Thanks for posting the video, it's made me aware of a potential problem I hadn't thought about before.

Re: Do any of your guns have a decocker? Check this!

My ruger P90 has a decocker and I have never had any problems of any kind with any ammo, ever. It's been 100% reliable.

Re: Do any of your guns have a decocker? Check this!

Huh. Never thought to "test" it because I practice my draw/DA trigger press at the range all the time. I can't picture any reasonable individual carrying a gun that they haven't practiced with extensively, and practice would seem invalid without decocking the gun before holstering. That said, I always take extra caution to where the gun is pointed before decocking.

Re: Do any of your guns have a decocker? Check this!

It's inertia. Nothing new or earth shattering here. Same principals apply with your AR and M1A's. If you chamber a round properly 99% of the time you will get an indentation on a primer from the inertia generated by the bolt through the firing pin. This will be an issue if your ammo primer is not seated properly.
This video is focusing on a safety mechanism as a problem when it truly is not.

Re: Do any of your guns have a decocker? Check this!

I've had and regularly used the decockers on my Sig 229, usp compact, and 92fs over the last 11 years and have never had a failure. But I have also performed that function in a safe direction with no exceptions.

Re: Do any of your guns have a decocker? Check this!

Had a customer several months ago transfer a Taurus 24/7 handgun through us (we refuse to sell any Taurus product period). He calls a week later to inform me that he had switched the decocker and it fired a round into the sheetrock at his house in his living room - a potentially dangerous situation with wife and pets present. Called Taurus and they just brushed it off at first. This was a good example of two things: keeping muzzle pointed in safe direction & the serious safety issues with Taurus products. Don't mean to offend any of the Taurus owners out there but this isn't the first case I have come across involving a Taurus handgun and safety. This guy ended up getting a free Taurus of his choice and went with a revolver.

Re: Do any of your guns have a decocker? Check this!

Nice Video. I do a similar test every time I clean any of my competition pistols but I use the eraser end and as long as it comes out of the barrel I know it will go bang the next time the buzzer sounds. Mine is more of a correct reassembly test. You should edit the video to let the viewer know that you have confirmed that the firearms are unloaded prior to starting the video. I was holding my ears when you pulled the first trigger. ;-)

and you never will because of the way the Sig decocker works. There is a mechanical firing pin block that makes it physically impossible for the firearm to be discharged when decocking. The only time it will go off is when that trigger is pulled.
