Okay...I think I finally narrowed my scope search down for my Savage Mark II FV-SR .22LR rifle. Rifle use for target, plinking and fun precision shooting.

* Do ya'll think that I would need it to be parallax adjustable (i.e. side focus or adjustable objective) If so, I think I would like side focus better as far as ease of use, but not a deal killer.
* Definately want mildot or hold over reticle
* One question I have is lower magnification range. Would you want 3, 4 or 5 for the minimum?

The scopes I think I like are:
Higher Price
- Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 30mm side focus mildot (Midway exclusive) For the money this may be my best deal, but I don't know if the low end is low enough or will be fine for closer shots. - $500
- Burris MTAC 3.5-10x42 or 4.5-14x42 30 mm adjustable objective mildot - $449-$549
Lower Price
- Weaver Tactical Grand Slam 3-10x40 1" mildot (Midway exclusive) (no parralax adjustment - Is this a big deal for a 22LR?) - $300
- Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x44 1" side focus mildot - $200-$270
- Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 1" adjustable objective ballistic plex - $300
- Nikon Prostaff 4-12x40 1" mildot no parralax adjustment - $170

Re: Finally narrowed my 22LR scope search - Need input

What are the kind of ranges you expect to be shooting? If 25y onwards you'll probably be fine with 5x.
If shooting very short range, you might want to go with something smaller.
But on the longer ranges, shooting prone, you will want the most power you can get.

So, what do you expect to be doing most?

I don't think I would be doing anything any closer than 20-25 yds with this rifle.

Re: Finally narrowed my 22LR scope search - Need input

I have the Viper 6.5-20x44 PA on my savage 223 and really like it great scope just wish it was mil mil instead of mil min. on my markII i went with the bsa mil mil from midway for like 250 and it does everything i need it to. seems to track straight so far, i have hit pigeons out at 185yds and 135 yds with it

Re: Finally narrowed my 22LR scope search - Need input

I would say go for the vortex. Seems very good for the money.

Only downside I can think of is the sfp reticle, but you'll probably be paying closer to 700 for something with ffp

Re: Finally narrowed my 22LR scope search - Need input

Another option to throw in the mix... find a nice used Bushnell 3-12 FFP for about $600. FFP, mil/mil, and side parallax down to 10Y. You can get them with either a regular mildot reticle or the G2DMR reticle.

I run one on my 10/22 and have another pair on precharged air rifles, all G2DMR reticles.

The Weaver is is good scope...5 mils per rev (Bushnell is 4 per rev

) and has better feel on the adjustments.

The whole parallax thing can best be answered by the ranges you plan to shoot. Inside 150yd shooting...you probably don't need that badly but close shots suck but hey its 10X. If lots of differently yardages out to the turret max is plan...get something with parallax adjustment.

Lean towards mil/mil first....then mil/moa second.

1st place-Vortex (duh, most expensive and features)
2nd place-Weaver mil/mil (ease of use)
3rd place-Nikon Buckmaster (good scope all around but mil/moa)

The rest offer less for less money or the same for more money.

Fuck that BDC reticle shit. Far better holds (windage and elavation) on a mildot...period. Way easier to stack holds on top of adjustments too.

The Prostaff loses simply cuz for $100 more you get side focus and 4 more magnification...so no dice there.

Vortex kicks the shit outta the Burris in features (except maybe glass but not sure) but this a $500 category scope...plus that much for mil/moa?

No

The Burris Mtac is mil/mil

Re: Finally narrowed my 22LR scope search - Need input

Leupold has the Mark AR series now with mil/mil and some reticle options like TMR and mil-dots, I'd consider that for a .22 trainer. Can't go wrong with the Weaver mil/mil though!

Buddy has one...turrets are spongey as hell and the parallax knob is off a Mueller.

The reticle is good but haven't done a tracking test on it.

Being a BSA leaves something to be desired.

So far it hasn't broke.

Yep, it's $250 scope so....

I'll tell yuh though, I'd rather have it than most of the scopes on the OP's list! I'm definitely a FFP/mil/mil lover and most of my shooting is holdovers and holdoffs. A friend has one also and all 3 track well to 10 mils. The name of the game on this type of scope is quantity not quality. For rimfires and air rifles this scope offers a affordable FFP.

BTW, I have a $3800 S&B that has things about it I don't like

Re: Finally narrowed my 22LR scope search - Need input

Mag. I have a MKII like yours and found the Weaver to be a great deal!. I use mine for pinking, target, hunting . My range goes to 250yd and with a 20moa base I have no problem getting there.
As far as the quality of the scope. Check out Lowlights review.
I dont think you will be dissapointed.

Good Luck!

Re: Finally narrowed my 22LR scope search - Need input

Okay..what about this deal?

Rifle has base from factory, but I don't know specifics. So for additional elevation, unless factory base already meets this (was unsure to ejection port measurement)

Base if don't use factory: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/615198/...tion-port-matte or http://www.midwayusa.com/product/331986/...tion-port-matte

Rings (unsure as to low or medium - recommendations?): http://www.midwayusa.com/product/116860/burris-1-xtreme-tactical-picatinny-style-rings-matte-low or http://www.midwayusa.com/product/377454/burris-1-xtreme-tactical-picatinny-style-rings-matte-medium

Scope Weaver Grand Slam Tactical 3-10x40 mil/mil: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/598484/...t-reticle-matte

Butler Creek Scope Covers (Can anybody help confirm the sizes?):
Rear #13? - http://www.midwayusa.com/product/731192/..._vc=sugv1598484
Front #26? - http://www.midwayusa.com/product/1168106...ront?cm_vc=U112

I think I like some of the other scopes that have side focus, but this scope selection leaves me some money for the rings and covers, etc.

My only two concerns is if I would need the parralax adjustment for closer shots and/or higher magnification. With the low end being 3x I don't think it would be necessary. However, with my eyes a higher magnification may be better.

Re: Finally narrowed my 22LR scope search - Need input

IMO parallax adjustment is a must have; especially with the shorter distances.

I use a Burris Tactical Elite in 5-15X on my 40XB trainer and really like it a lot. IMO (again) matching reticle/turrents for a .22 isn't a must have. I use a 50 yard zero and I know that (depending on which lot of R50 I am shooting) I need to bump up approx. 6.5 inches at 100. I am more interested in the use of the reticle.

If you want to stretch your budget a little... explore www.bearbasin.com - you can do interest free financing for 6-12 months depending on the cost of your optics.

Re: Finally narrowed my 22LR scope search - Need input

I went ahead and placed my order last night for the Weaver Grand Slam Tactical 3-10x40 with Burris XTR low rings and a 20 MOA base. I think this will be a geat set up based upon all the input and reviews I have read.

Thanks for ya'lls help.

Re: Finally narrowed my 22LR scope search - Need input

If it were me I would go with the buckmaster scope I have one on my .22 mag and it works well for the gun, not to bulky and a clear scope for the money

This is what I went with. Shooting 100y, and even 50y is fine with it. At 200y its great. Though if you have $200 more to spend, I would have gone with the Vortex myself. However, the Weaver is pretty great for a trainer. The turrets are pretty damn good.

I have since put a DIP 20MOA rail on it, which I highly recommend getting from the start if you want to shoot 200yards+

I have the twin of this little 22 except that I did a camo job on my tacticool stock. I am extremely happy with the Weaver scope.

Based on your recommendation (and others that I have read on the interwebs) I intend to order the DIP 20moa base unit. Off to read your buld thread.

Good quick read. I do like the YHM flash hider better than the savage thread protector!

How did you find a picture of my AR???

Re: Finally narrowed my 22LR scope search - Need input

I have a Weaver and a Nikon on a couple of my .22 rifles, and am completely satisfied with the performance of both. Unless I had a thousand dollar .22 rifle, I just can't justify spending any more than 250 or so dollars for the scope. JMHO.
